Scandalous Ticket from Wisc. DNR

We were stopped in burgland 10 years ago. We drove on the street for 1 block to get to the gas station. They had over 20 sleds stoped and were asking for $150 cash for riding on a side street. My dad asked them if it was legal to take cash. They were accepting cash from many that were stopped. My buddy pulled out his wallet and went through his wallet making sure that both officers saw his police badge. The tune changed real quick and the 8 people that were stopped near us were politely asked to not ride on the road and to leave. We don't go to burgland anymore.

I have a hard time believing that one.

They should make a law that says if you fight a ticket and win the fine comes out of the arresting officers paycheck.

They would be running me to jail then. I never carry more than $50.00 cash when I go out. I just use my debit card. Almost every place I go takes them now. The $50.00 is just in case some place doesn't.

demand a 6 person jury trial of your peers, pay the $27.00 dollar jury fee/ may differ in different counties. The DA will have a talk with you and you tell your story and they will throw it out. Happened to me with a no wake ticket, looking for drunks, i had GPS and show that for 2 hours was going 2.4 miles per hour, and the DA dismissed it. They do not want to have a trial for the small amount of fee. Had a friend who did it on a hunting violation. good luck

Are you a snowmobiler or just someone who sits in front of a computer trying to get on people's nerves? I've seen a few of your other posts and you obviously don't have a clue as to what's going on out there.

I can guarantee you that they take cash on the spot. I was told less than two weeks ago that I was lucky that he wasn't making me give him $100 cash right there. I won't go near Bergland again myself. When I was there a few years ago The DNR was sitting right in the parking lot of that gas station handing tickets out. Why would the owner let him do that?

The other option is they would take you DL and you could get it back by going to court. I understand that nobody wants to belive that cops would do something unethical. This is not bs. There were 2 officers. One was in his late 40s and the other in his late 20s. The younger guy was the first to notice my friends policed badge. He let out a wooo when he say it. He was acting a bit uncomfortable so the older officer came over and saw the the police badge hanging out. The older officer was the one tol tell us to leave.
Last year I was in Wetmore. After eating at a small bar (beartrap maybe). My buddy was going out of the parking lot. He could not see a suburban coming because of a huge snow bank . He collided with the suburban. (Lucky to be alive). He was taken to the hospital. The county sherriff was nice enough to meet him there and ask for $80 cash for failure to yield. He told my buddy that it was a citation written under the snowmobile ordinance. That it would not effect his driving record. 2 months later his inurance company showed a violation out of Michigan. The county wants him to pay additional money for the fine. My buddy says good luck getting that money.

We have a new policy regarding law enforcement while snowmobiling. Just keep your head turned the other way and don't make eye contact. If they catch us they will then have something to talk to us about.

These cops in MI are bad news. Being unethical is not part of the job they signed up for.

If you decide to run???

I know they have 'stop sticks' for vehicle pursuits but what would they use for a snowmobile, the old fake rope stretched across the road trick ???

A couple of years ago we were snowmobiling by my brother-in-laws place in lodi, wi. There were atv ice races on the lake and my son went by the race area and 2 DNR wardens followed him. They claim they couldn't see his registration. Well, he rode off the lake and up the road to my brother-in-laws house where they promptly approached him after he stopped at the house. We came up the road 10 min later and saw them talking with him. They said they were giving him a ticket for riding on the road. My bother-in-law had told us it was ok in town and told the DNR so. They said they were unaware of such an agreement and if it was the case (which I found out later it wasn't) he could go to court. I told the cop to give me the ticket instead since I was his father and had told him it was ok. They had no problem with it and issued the citation. They never asked for any cash or bond or license. While we were there we all saw several snowmobiles and atvs driving down the street to the gas station or even between there homes and the lake. The officers made no attempt to catch them. Yes, everybodys paperwork was in order.

By the way the citation was $187.00 but I found out that if you call on your court date and talk to the DNR officer they automatically drop the fine and I paid about $120.00.
Also fyi most of the amount of the ticket goes to court costs and fees, the actual fine was about $60 to $80 before I called.

Yes, we should not have driven on the street, but I had asked my brother-in-law if it was ok and he had assured us it was. Everytime I go there I still see ALOT of people riding the street to get to the lake from their houses. And I have tried to search the web for ordinances there and called different town officials and no one can give me the same answer. The town is actually Harmony Grove by Lake Wisconsin it has a Lodi mailing address. Some people say it is ok and some say it isn't.

Not sure how Wisconsin does it but Michigan won't tell you what the fine is when you get busted, even for a trail sticker violation. They want you to call and they tell you over the phone. What kind of hokie game is that? I want something in black and white so nobody can come back later and tell me I didn't pay enough. Why can't they just write the amount on the ticket?

It's a lottery!! It's a lot of fun! Try it, my wife did! LOL $135 for a careless operation fine. She couldn't wait to get home to call and find how much she won, err.. loss!

lol... I know exactly where you are talking about. We went up in 2003 or 2004 and it was the same deal. Man... they must fund at least half their town budget from that little gas station!

Last winter in Central WI they had a spot setup where you got funneled through these pine trees. When you got close to the end they turned on their DNR lights and put a big orange metal post across the trail. It was about a mile past a popular bar and they were just looking for drunks. I got a warning for nighttime speed and went on my way... and I was WAY over the 55 limit... so I don't really have any complaints against the central WI DNR.

Well, I have been riding for 35 years, and I have never once been stopped by the DNR.

I do know exactly what is going on out there.

DNR officers asking for cash?? That is crap. If that was true, it would be very easy to prove, and very easy to have them fired.

As for my posts getting on your nerves, sorry, but I speak what is on my mind. If you don't like them, don't read them.

I'm not talking about a bribe. It's called a "Cash Bond", and they WILL take it on the spot. If they did, however, decide to take money on the side, why don't you tell me how would it be so easy to prove?

Ok, I have never heard of a "cash bond". Is that something that is legal for them to do? If so, then what is the complaint? If someone is breaking the law, and the officer can legally accept cash to pay the ticket on the spot with a "cash bond", then I do not see the problem.

yep----not sure on snowmobile but here is the deal in A car----

Michigan----leave your license hard card till you pay or PAY on the spot

Wisconsin----PAY ON THE SPOT OR GOTO JAIL...cash-debit-check--it does not matter pay now...
