Ski Doo Summit Questions........

Ya ex AF, one of my best friends retired from the AF up there so I been there quite a few times, he lives in Wasilla and has property on the original Iditarod trail on the Big Su. We've ridden to Yentna Station a few times when one of his daughter's was mushing in the Jr. Iditarod. If he can find a Polaris with a dealer documented rebuild I wouldn't be scared of it. What I was thinking about the base lot was maybe he could find a sled/trailer combo. Tell him to be patent and if he can swing it have a dealer check it out before he buys it if possible.

Groomerdriver-i dont have much advice but i will say this,1) i would love to shake your sons hand and thank him for serving our country! 2) i have a 2011 800etec renegade ski doo rebuilt with the recall,it runs flawless.5000 miles now.i know thats not the chasis you are asking about, but the engine is great.

He's watching this thread but I'll say "you are very welcome" for him! He is serving his country with honor and we are extremely proud of him!

I think he rode to Yentna Station last season! I'll have to ask him. Yes, a sled/trailer combo would be idea and a big yes to having the sled checked out before buying it. In a perfect world he'd find the right sled at one of the dealers up there. I suggested that he needs to establish a relationship with one of them (dealer) because they're the ones that will likely do any major work that's needed.

It's possible that in 60 days he could be riding up there. Lucky sh*t!

Have him check with CC SkiDoo in Eagle River they are right off the Glen Hwy. They helped me with a broken fastner on my helmet and didn't even charge me for the new one. Thats he only dealer that I've dealt with out there

Yes, he will be stopping in there as well as the Doo dealer in Anchorage.......AK Mining and Diving Supply.

Watch for another thread asking about older model Polaris'!

UPDATE - he's having second thoughts about laying out $9000K for a 12-14 Doo Summit and is asking specifically about the 2006 - 2010 era Summit's. Summit's with a 146" (?) track are far more plentiful than 154's or 163's.

So what are your thoughts (there have been some posted already) on this era 800 motors as well as the chassis?

The 07 summit XRS is regarded by many doo loyals as one of the best summits ever from DOO. Some people mod them and prefer them over new summits. That was the first year of the powertek 800. If it has been updated correctly it is a reliable engine, but its not an etec. these sleds sell for the 4-4500 range. the 05-06 summits would be using the 800Ho engine in its ladder years, it wont make the power of the ptek but by 05-06 it was a good engine for that era and past the ring issues. the problem will be finding one of these with lower miles. If he was going to look into XP summits i would avoid the 08 year, the 2010 was the most refined engine and chassis wise. With proper maintenece and jetting these engines work. But like any 800 from this era, nothing is gaurenteed especially when being beat on in the mountains. They dont have the safeguards and longevity of the etecs. One thing to consider that i have seen is left over 2015 summit sps for 8-9000 if there are any in alaska.

Kip has a 2012 Doo Summit 800 Rev XP 154". 700 miles for $6995. I know how we all love Kip here but what are your thoughts on this sled for my son in AK? Will be a mix of trail and mountain riding. This is a carb sled so would a Dial a Jet be needed when he's riding in elevations ranging from 1000-4500 feet?

No Jetting needed. Just clutching. (Mainly weight) Call Sledhead Racing. Big John can get you the exact set up for elevation. As Momoney states above, it's not that much more to go brand new. Skidoo continues to crank out that 800 PTEK in the old XP chassis as a (well powered) economical option for offtrail/mountain riding without having to spend big $ as you would otherwise on the ETEC/800 XM chassis.

Well carving is not sidehilling and sidehilling is not carving. The XP struggles sidehilling.... I think groomerdriver is more after a reliable sled than he is the best sidehiller/carver/whatever you want to call it.

Sure this pic isn't photo chopped?

The XP Chassis Summit climbs well and does make a nice mountain sled. They are however more difficult to ride in technical terrain. The balance point when on edge becomes a bit twitchy. This is why Doo went to a 36" front end, T-Motion rear suspension and the Flex Edge tracks.

agreed, guys do learn to throw them around but the learning curve is not like a pro or and M. A bunch of us went to the big horns a few years back and one in our group had a 09 summit146 and stuck it so we all ended up taking a break where this sled was stuck. 3 of us just for grins took the Doo for a ride and all 3 immediately noticed the unusual effort to man handle this sled. My 2001 Yamaha mtn max actually handled better than the doo

He won't have the technical tree riding that you have out west or in the yoop, I've ridden a lot of the area's that he will be riding. They ride these areas with utility sleds, once you start going up in elevation the only trees you have are creek bottoms choked with Alders and Willows. I understand he wants a reliable sled he would be best on a 600 for a Doo or a Poo if he is dead set on an 800 for those years cat is it for reliability. For all around riding the XP chassis with a 600 will work as he will be trail riding it also.
