Snowmobiling in Northeast Wisconsin

SHOULD SAY ABOVE: "NORTHWEST WISCONSIN"

Looking at a map, I was wondering what the trail system is like in Northwest Wisconsin. I've done a lot of riding in Northeast Wisconsin, but really haven't gotten much further west than 51. Is there good riding West of their, such as towards White River/Ashland and then further, up that peninsula that goes toward the Apostle Islands (basically anything West of Ashland and North of 2? Looks like it's a lot of forest land and may get some lake effect. I don't think I've heard too many people talk about this area.

I really like the trail system in northeast Wisconsin where there is good snow (lots of twisties, lower traffic if you avoid the towns, not many rr grades). Just wondering if the riding is good west of there also.

Hoosier, the title of your thread may be a tad confusing, since you're asking about Nortwestern Wisconsin. Anyway, I think that's LoveMyDobe territory and I'm sure she can give you the real low-down.

Haven't ridden up there for a couple of years but my recollection is that it's a pretty big trail system. I've ridden from Washburn up to Cornucopia, down to Brule, over to Hayward, Clam Lake, Mellen, and back up to Ashland. Lots of variety, some nice lake riding, winding trails, stretches of open field riding. Like any area, it all depends on the snow. I think the area gets some lake effect but not as much as the Hurley/Ironwood area. A lot the trails pass through the Chequamegon national forest so there's a lot of wilderness riding. We were there during the week and hit the snow just right - about 8" overnight. I think we went almost 30 miles before we saw another track.

It is a great place to ride. Have cabin in eastern Douglas county. Like anywhere the snow can be good and then it can be bad. When they have it lots of trails to choose from.

Thanks for the answers. I would like to look into this a little more. I imagine they had a good year 2 years ago, but not so good last year. Always looking for new places to ride, and like to stay off the beaten path when possible...

I have a cabin near Gordon, WI in Douglas County and it is real good riding from there up toward Iron River and into the Bayfield peninsula. They get next to nothing for traffic compared to east of Hwy 51. All the trails in the Cheq National Forest are a blast to ride. There are endless forest roads and some off trail areas as well. I love riding that area. But yeah, like said above - don't tell too many people, its kind of our little secret. : )

NW WI trails

YES OUR TRAILS ROCK!!! We don't get as many sleds as around the Cable area, so normally our trails are fine. As the rest of you know from my posts, Hubby is the Groomer Coordinator for Iron River WI and now on the Board for Bayfield County Snowmobile Alliance and I do the trail reports on Snowtracks.com for our area. Let me know when you're coming up Hoosier, and I will find you a place to stay off the beatin path. Actually the way our trails are there is no beat up path, only busy on the 2 Corridor but usually well groomed. Hope to get a PM from you when the snow flies this winter.

Thanks for the info! Yeah, hopefully it will work out that the snow is there with the days we pick next year! If so, I'll definitely get in touch.
