Snowmobiling trip verses bar hopping

It is the same all over. Always has been. The wider the age difference the more likely something like that will happen. The best thing to do would have been to split into two or even three groups. Let the barhoppers bar hop. Those that want to ride, ride. When planning your next trip plan it with people that share your priorities.

Bouncer--Funny you should ask that. The 2nd full day of riding my husband took the lead and said were going to ride. We have communicators so he took the front and I brought up the back of the pack. The first bar we passed some of the group stopped and put their hands up and did the tip a drink with their hands, and when they realized we weren't stopping they were a lillte shocked. We got some miles and smiles in that day. The 3rd day we all rode to the first bar, and then about 6 went back after the first 50 miles we rode. They got back closer to the resort and bar hopped the rest of the day. The others went on with my husband leading and me bringing up the back. We took them up a big hill top and they were in aw of the beautiful sites from up on top. Priceless. The cameras were buzzing.

xcr440---You would have a good 3 to 3 1/2 hours of riding in before the hungovers in our group would have caught up with you.

PS. Did not see any DNR for 3 1/2 days. We have been stopped so many time by the DNR riding the few trails we have in our area and the little snow we get to ride on.

I've heard this same exact complaint for over 35 years its such an easy fix just go and find someone with similar ride'n styles and hookup to ride with them... That's the beauty of this thing called da internet heck there's snowmachiners all over the country and the world just hookup and ride... Well at least thats what werks for me... Hose'n the northwoods with a blanket untrue statement is just gonna hurt the good folks AND there's a hella lotta good ones up dere...

boatssleds,

My wife and I are in full agreement in regards to the alcohol and riding. We have had too many close calls on the trail only to see the same sleds sitting in front of the next bar on the trail. The the nice thing about riding the Western UP is that bars are few and far between AND the trails are not crowded.
IF we do any drinking its after the sleds are all tucked away and resting up for the next day.
We have been lucky enough that through this website, we meet a great young couple, Jason and Christy and their boys (lofsfire) that live 60 miles from us to plan rides with. We have meet in Michigan and Indiana and have riden together. After the day is done, we have gone out and enjoyed the evening.

If you are looking for others to ride with, a riding style or age group, I say put a post on the 'Ride Board' and see what you get. I'm sure there are others out there, like yourself who would welcome a good days ride with other like minded snow lovers.

Good luck and happy riding...

drunks are everywhere

i ride with a group that the average age is 50 and i'm 43. they are the ones that want to stop at all the bars. my self would rather ride. Last year in the UP i took them on a 300 mile trip in one day when i was lead dog. after that i let them do what they wanted the next couple of days after getting my ridn in. i've seen my share of drunks in both wi and mi.

I have know people who stay on one lake all day and just bar hop. We have been asked by many people if they could ride with us and then we tell them when breakfast is and when we are gone. Not many show up b/c they were out too late the night before. Its always interesting/suprising to see who really goes north to sled or drink. Usually the drinkers are weeded out b/c cant afford all the trips/repairs to the sleds or people really get sick of how they act.

Dognvenos--We normally sled around the Curtis Mi area but have stayed in the White Pines area many times over the years. We go up Sat to Sat and ride all week and hardly see anyone. We do have a group we ride with, but my husband changed jobs and couldn't go up for a whole week, so when they asked us to go up on Wed to Sun, he could take 3 days off but not the whole week. We will go back to Curtis next year with the same group and have a great time. In all the miles I have ridden this was the first trip I had to run my sled off the trail to avoid being hit by another sledder. We have put a post on the ride board, but couldn't hook up with anyone that was going in the same time frame. But we will try again someday.

one day they will force us to buy a sled no matter who makes it to take a breath test for drinking just to start your sled up . If your drunk you don't go anywhere period and it will have to be you cause they will make that your DNA will be the only thing that will start the sled up . Like your finger prints It's going to come down to this or they will just ban us all together and that may be coming soon to thanks to that idiot Al I'd like to be golabal warming his Arse Gore

It could be coming. And if you breath into it, and it fails, a police alarm will go off, then you might pay a fine, then imprisoned......just like the new health-care plan going through right now.

If you fail, you could go to jail.
Its a new world thunder, soon your tab money will be used to build check points for sledders.

This will never happen as with anything it could be bypassed in a matter of seconds.....Only one thing should ever be said about drinking and sledding....Be responsible about it!!! Zero Tolerance is a pipe dream and will never happen...

When we go to Wisc. we go during the week. A lot of the bars in the area being talked about here aren't even open until Thursday. After the weekend warriors are done it takes the groomers Monday to get everything back in shape. We put on a ton of miles on Tues., Wed and Thursday. By about Friday noon it is time to pack up and go home. The best riding is low-traffic riding whether the traffic is sober or swilled. Also, it is not necessary to be drunk to do incredibly stupid things.

just another one of my 2 cents worth. I could think of more usage of my hard earned money then to waste it on booze and smokes . 5 to 6 bucks a pack for smiokes do the math in a years time thats alot and booze you can go through lots of money in a years time to . Put that money to better use maybe buy a new snowmobile for all that money or if you got kids college , food , clothes, pay your bills and get out of the bar smell the roses or see the snowflakes .

To chime in again, these are the primary reason's I like to go out at 8am:

1. Its COLDer, sleds run better
2. Better trails, usually this is when the freshest grooming has been done
3. Bars are CLOSED! Usually until noon or so
4. I much prefer daylight RIDING, not sitting in a bar.
5. Usually Done riding by drinking time (3-4pm), and I'm TIRED by then, with 150+ miles and a good day behind me, THEN I (we) can drink
6. If you were out drinking the night before, its less likely you will be on MY trail at 8am.

Agreed! I was up in Eagle River for New Years. We set out early on New Years Day and did not see a single sled until about 1:00 PM. Traffic was light the whole day and trails were awesome. Everybody was hungover but we were not.

Wow, another great forum.

Soon we will be having the same discussion for all those people who want to legalize
weed. Then we will have more disoriented people out there.

There might actually be a need for trails to have ONE WAY traffic directions.
