I went to a Bear game in Chicago one time with a bunch of drunks.Icant believe they kept serving them beers all night. They didn't even card anybody! There were lots of people there that looked like they could not drive home. The crowd was very loud and rude to Brett Favre. My drunks got obnoctious and thought there were no cops at nfl games! I hate Chicago and will never go back. I tore up all my Packer stuff! From now on I will pick my friends more wisely and ride safe!

Last thing I would blame is WI. I don't get that at all?? I joined a snowmo club in the 90s that will be unnamed that planned a trip to the Cable area. I signed up & so did my daughter & her husband. We were planning trips to Bayfield & other 200 mile + loops here & there. The club members said "what are you doing???" ......."We are going to ride the lake stick trail bar to bar we aren't riding 200 mile loops you crazy or what?" I was dazed ......cancelled out & told them "I RIDE if YOU want to ride a stupid stick trail & bar hop fine but me & my family are out". The club was PISSED!! I said "hey better to understand my exspectation up front bar hopping is not for us". They kept our 50 bucks ea. 100 total bucks up front money. We in turn were PISSED screw you guys who needs ya? We went to White Pine UPMI & had a great time & rode our butts off. You just plain need to know who you are riding with, could be drinkers, could be slowpokes, could be talkers that stop & BS every 10 miles.

Last year I was invited on a group ride with about 10 guys we rode about 100 miles then they wanted to start drinking. I guided them to the bar a lot of high 5s all around said goodbyes & I took off. I'm just not interested in sitting in a bar drinking when I could be riding. I thought this could happen with a large group of younger guys so when it did I bowed out gracefully. Again you need to know the people you are riding with & if it is not going well just check out & think ok different strokes for different folks. It certainly is not the States fault people want to drink they will no matter the State. Prohibition bad law did NOT work. Point 0.000 won't work either just not realistic.

I really want to say somthing about this but what can I say im the % that doesnt drink and drive period dot !! and I live in WI. and ride our trails and the U.P.'s . When we went on our annual trip in Dec 8th-13th 2009 there was a fatality drunken snowmobiler missed a stop and took out some sighn and his life he was found around 4 pm. I think It was the morning of the 9th in handcock or calumet sadly he was the 1rst one for the season in the U.P. !! So you cant tell me WI> is the only ones.. next time pay attention to the sleds if there is a sticker in the shield that says WI. stop POINTING FINGERS AT US !! We are not perfect eather . Im done THIS IS A SORE SUBJECT WITH ME DRINKING AND DRIVING on a sled or in a car ect ect ect !!

I did it, I drove drunk, in a car, on a sled and in a boat. I'm sorry, I was young and dumb. I was also very lucky. That being said, I'm human and not perfect, I do not drink and drive anything these days not because I got in trouble, because I choose not too. I have kids now and I choose a different path. People do what they do and you cannot change that ,all you can do is watch out for it, predict it and avoid it. nobody said your life would be void of dumb ****s, life is life, good bad and indifferent. You have the choice of who you ride with, who your freinds are and how you want to live. There is no guarentee on how long you'll live so live like your dying.

I wish we could hear from some of the people that do these kinds of activities and think it's cool.

I did it for years. Heck, back when I used to do the Bunny Run west of Crivitz, in order to get the patch you had to get your card stamped at like 20 bars....I had at least one tapper at every one and OMG!!! I'm still alive!

Since so many here are eager to pass judgement and think of ways to punish those who commit these offenses, I say lets quit beating this topic to death and talk about driving a car while talking on a cell phone. I'll bet boatssleds has NEVER done that!

I think there should be equal punishment for intentionally doing ANYTHING that reduces ones ability to concentrate 100% on operating the vehicle they are driving. What was that thunderstruck said? $10,000 fine? sounds good to me.

That post is an all time classic!

upsledder, your right. I know people who have killed innocent people while talking on their cell phones. It doesn't take much to distract you while driving, but they always think it will never happen to them.

Lets just ban everything.

I wonder how many axidents happen cause someone was looking down at
there GPS while sledding. Imagine getting rear ended by someone doing 60
while distracted.

Feel your pain

My wife and I fought this problem for years up until three years ago when we found some great responsible riders in the UP and Gaylord area. All are beers drinkers but don't drink until the ride is over and my wife and I only ride at night when we have to and that is only 5 % of the time. I have some very close friends in WI and they are very responsible riders and I have meant some great fellow riders from WI sounds like you just a run of bad luck with some irresponsible people. Hope to see you and your significant other in the backcountry.

We have ridden in the UP and Northern WI ALOT!! The only difference I see is the bars are farther apart in the UP. Sounds like you were with a pretty brainless group. I would at least hope someone in your group piped up and said to take it easy and be careful. "People die on those trails." We are in our 40s and to be honest I dont like to even go with anyone other than the "Usual riders" No more than 6 ever. Just because if we take someone new. I feel responsible and I dont want to do that. A Hopefully you found a couple of people you will want to ride with again. I wouldn't blame Wisconsin?

WOW,now if only the overtaxed working people of the USA could get THIS wound up over our corrupt government. Wasting our trail $$. Closing the trails. Raising the sticker price. Any of you realize how nice we citizens would have it , if ALL THE ELECTED CLOWNS would not WASTE our $$$$. Come-on people, the government is drinking the GOOD-STUFF, and YOUR FOOTIN THE BILL.

Not sure of this but I think they that is the government is going to mkae it so you can't talk on your cell phone or text while your driving anything anymore soon The insurance people are going to make it tough on anyone who gets in a wreck doing this . Soon if this keeps happening people on snowmobiles getting killed by drinking they the government and the insurance people will make it tougher on us to get insurance for our sleds . Also law suits will be coming out the get go to if you kill some one while being drunk . Also I see down the road if this don't stop bar owners will be held resposible for serving snowmobilers too many drinks . They should do this for all vehicles . I am not a tea totaler but I don't drink anything until the sled or car is parked and all I drink is 1 wine cooler when I do have a drink . I don't want to take a chance in ruining my life or any one elses family life and to look into the eyes of a family memeber who lost there dad or mom or brother or sister to tell them your the one that possilbly killed them by being drunk NO WAY !!!!!

OMMM NO INsHURANCE ON SLEDS WHAT ?? you dont have inshurance ?? you are responcible for your actions its like a car you should at least have liability on the sled if you are going to ride !! I always think about the what if possibility !! This isnt the 60's- 1980's anymore !!

I really wouldn't be at all worried about the government stepping in and regulating sleds because of the number of fatalities in a year. As stated earlier it''s a tiny percentage versus number of sleds out there. Granted it sucks to be the few in the small percentage category but that's the reality of it when looking at numbers. If it starts to kill thousands a year I'm sure they would take a look but 20+ a state a year isn't a very high number at all..I hear people saying that the bars are full of drunks yet accidents are pretty far and few between compared to the number of people passing through these establishments.
