Yup, riding the Ontario wilderness areas are our faves for sure. Made that loop that firefighter1 talked of many times, and never get tired of it as you can very the routes to your choosing. They, OFSC are still missing some of the greatest trails up there that were lost in the results of the great recession 2007, and 2008. The 'North of Superior Loop' is my most missed. As the scenery is absolutely out of this world due to the rugged terrain that the trails have encounter on this route.

If you entered thru Grand Portage you would have to drive to Marathon before you would have trails to ride according to the IGT map. If you live up in the area of Minnesota that may make the most sense, it would have been a longer drive for us in the southern part of the state.

I am in the northern suburbs so can go either way. Sounds like SSM is better.

Yeah, the trail along the northern edge of Lake Superior has been shut down for a number of years, you’ll have to head across the UP and thru SSM. A shame as that would be a cool bucket list item to ride around Lake Superior
Yep, 2007 was the last year for a open trail from Marathon west. Really rugged terrain, winch the groomers up the steep long hills and bluffs. But absolutely gorgeous scenery!
We always started in searchmont (not far from ssm), but I hear there is gas now in searchmont. You'll need to be able to carry gas if you are starting in searchmont or ssm, with halfway haven closed. That can't reopen as the road to it was washed out and it's impossible for them to get gas in. There's no end to good riding up there when there is snow (takes quite a bit due to terrain in places)
