"Snow traditionally has been chased. It has never been a given."

I must just be imagining that for many years we used to "just go" (Crivitz,Lakewood) anytime after New Years without wondering about the snow conditions and there was always snow, no need to "chase it".
If you drove to snow, it was chased. Maybe not at a run but more of a walk, but you had to go to it.

Here is from Today' Ironwood Paper. Please note the snow received so far. Half then last years total so, I hope theres lots more snow to come !!!

Snowfall
2011-12 Season to date: 81.5 inches
Snow on the ground today: 13 inches
2010-11: 169.4 inches: Season Total
2009-10: 170.6 inches: Season Total
Last year in Appleton WI around 90" so far this year 15"!!! (if that!) Now that is depressing. Have about an inch left on the ground. I don't think the new groomer we bought will even spin a tire this winter... All it takes is one storm. One storm people...

All I can say this is why I sold my sleds and brought ATVs. I have windsheilds and heated hand grips. Might no be able to go 100MPH but I can ride any time of the season.

This will be the first year since we began grooming that we probably won't turn a wheel. This in extreme NW MN where it always snows. Very odd year. So much for all the long term forecasts back in Oct. Just about all of them called for a long, cold snowy winter. Oh, well. Planning to go to Cable area Feb 12. They say they have ridable snow. Hopefully it holds up until we get there.

I rode yesterday from here ( Iron River Wi) to Cable. It was sunny and 40. Trails are going away fast down there, especially between Grandview and Drummond. It is going to be above 35 the next few days. On a better note, Lake Namakagon is fun to ride

To racer x, I have been a boat owner for several years and decided to upgrade my 2006 to a 2012, so I actually do have yrs of experience owning a boat. To me, a day on the river burning $100 worth of fuel with friends and family is far worth it than getting upset wondering, wishing, or hoping it is going to snow, then get upset there was a warm spell and the trails are junk. And to doospunk, the happiest day of a boat owner is when he buys it and when he sells it, that is the funniest thing I have heard. The only time I will sell, is to upgrade to a bigger and better model.

Is that a typo on fuel burned? I can get from the slip to the fuel dock and back on (same marina) $40 and another $20 for pump out. That doesn't include buying additional fuel. Then it is a thousand bucks and tip to the cutie at the gas dock who hands me a hose for each tank to speed things up.

I am thinking that our calender is out of wack with the seasons, that's all. Winter will be in March, april and part of MAY. Ya never know!!

Umm, no typo on fuel burned. I paid over $4 a gallon on the river last year, 30 gallon tank, 6-8 hours of continous skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, and cruising.

East end of superior in Ontario has snow. There trail permits are looking more affordable now. To soon to toss in the towel. Activate one of those credit cards that we get daily in the mail and ride. Summers are for paying them back. I think the ducks and geese in my yard are confused on which direction to fly.

Just got back from a 80 mile ride. Went from Ironwood on Trail 2 to 160 North to Lake Superior. (not bad) As soon as we crossed into Wisconsin on Trail 160 which turns into Wisconsin Trail 3 it was horrible and, no snow through Saxon Harbor all the way almost to the Frontier Bar. Got on Trail 2 to head back to Ironwood to Trail 7 to Trail 6 then back down to Trail 2. Then, Wisconsin Trail 2 got bad from Squeaks Bar all the way to Hurley with dirt in some spots. It is also 40 degrees today. I am holding off on riding until next week when "allegedly" we will get more snow. If you are planning to come up this weekend, you might do well to hold off a week. THe trails could be near destroyed with heavy traffic in next few days if we don't get cold and snow. I even snarled at someone in the store this morning in Ironwood when they said, "It is going to be a beautiful day, enjoy !" I replied, "I would enjoy this day if it was April 1 !!! This is February 1, WE WANT and NEED SNOW !!! (Remember, this trail report is only my opinion and only involves Ironwood to Saxon Harbor to Hurley Not, anywhere else.

On the bright side... The 1100 mile round trip drive we made last week to spend 3 days riding in the Keweenaw was well worth it. It's been two years since I've seen the UP.. Hard to believe I've missed getting stuck!!
