Hey, them mountains get chilly at night..........
I initially read the post at 4:30 this morning after only getting 3 hours of sleep and thought it said "nuts to bolts". Kind of wish the thought had stayed that way for the rest of the day!
So where is the favorite place to play in the Snowies? Broke Back Mtn?
Kidding of course! Sleep deprivation will make someone do strange things!

You should agree! You gave me the same opinions a few years back when I was trying to go West on the cheap also, and after going West I came back agreeing with you 100%! Sorry if I am beating a dead horse, but the following are thoughts on going West (and this is from a guy with a limited riding budget right now:
1. Lodging and food is more up on the mountain. Totally different than staying at a little Mom and Pop or Super 8 in St. Germain or Calumet or wherever, since it's so secluded. You can probably control this somewhat by looking around a little - Lava Mountain, cabin rentals, some other places more focused on summer activities, etc. We stayed in Centennial last year, saved some money and driving time and had a great time. If you are going all in with guides, all food covered, etc., Togwotee is a great deal, but you can go out there for less if you want. One thing I really think you don't want to do is trailer up and down the mountain more than once though. The roads can be bad, and even if clear, it's probably 2 hours a day, which is a waste of time, IMO. I'd rather ride fewer days than deal with that every day.
2. Good guides are expensive, but worth it. This is something worth doing at least one day while you are out there. The last time we went out there, we rode 4 days but just 2 with guides. That was a good balance for us. It saved some money, and we rode more leisurely and recovered a little the days without guides.
3. You will save quite a bit in snowmobile gas and oil, since you won't be putting on 200-300 miles a day. I don't think we cleared 100 miles in a day any day we were out there the three times we went West. Of course you put more gas in the truck, but it evens out from the gas in the sleds.
4. The biggest hidden cost with going West is that you're going to want to do it again, and again, and again. I still love riding trails and all that, but there's something great about not being nervous the whole week before you leave about the possibility of a big melt-down, or if the trails will all be beat down from traffic, or if ricky-racer is going to run you off the trail coming the other way. Unless your focused on barstool racing, it's incredible out there.

I Agree some more! lol! Togwotee is a great place to get started into the experience. I do like the meals and transportstion part being taken care of for one money. In Island Park and Cooke City I have never had a guide and did pretty darn good with a GPS. Tog. is so vast that a guide is great there. Going to Lava Mtn. this year and no guide, going to hang mainly in the Brooks lake, to Togwotee Pass and south to drag race hill and back to Lava mtn. Got that area somewhat figured out and I have the topigraphical maps of the entire area downloaded on my GPS directly from Lowrance web site. Also I can read a map and operate a compass need be.

and try side hilling on a sand dune..... haha! well, have to mix in some sun along with the snow fun!

Tog is one them "if you dont try it" you wont get it!!!!just one them things you can tell people till blue in the face and some get it some dont.....I have friends who refuse to goto tog to ride.....but like I said they wont even try so for me to keep telling em its worth it, is just wasting gmy breath, till they try they wont get it............I have done cooke in a cabin that has not been used since 189,1 ate cold arby's sandwiches and had a blast.........I also have done tog on the "rock star" ride and my budget can only afford the cooke cabin BUT i wont wast my time anymore trying to find 25$ burger in town or 5$dollar beer or 40$ frozen steak or wait 35dollar chicken dinner in cooke that sucked....point is the food in mtn top towns is never cheap some should put that in there budget first..............of course there Bearclaws, wife she has 4dollar breakfast you can even get at home that good..........

isn't it crazy busy in CO with all the yuppie skiers, tree huggers, etc.. CO is known as being expensive and crowded by "out west standards".
this yrs accommodations
in ski towns yes but towns with no ski hill no.
we park in the rabbit ears lots and camp for 3 then run down the hill for gas a shower more food head back up for 3 more.
there are outhouses at rabbit ears but also lots of guys with 200k rigs that are like hay use my bath catch a shower if u want come on in and party.
I have done grand lk also great riding there no ski people and a few reasonable resorts you can ride from the lot.
there can be allot of guys camping on the pass but that is cool in its own way
we also ride Breckenridge once u leave the lot and go a mi u see no one all day.
but this yr no canceled trips we will go to where the snow is we committed to riding new yrs day even if we have to pull to Taho

Man, I've never been, but now I'm worried! I will be addicted in a heart beat. I got hooked just breaking trail here in IA!!! Prob won't be able to swing it this year, but hopefully the following.

has your government shown u the light? if u dont have the money charge! it if u cant pay the bill use a diff card to pay that card. when u cant pay any bills and have all new toys and tools just file for bankrupt. but u wont care u will have a new sled new atv new cars new boat and a re adjusted house payment.

Well, I hate to admit it, but if it were not for my wife keeping me in check, I would prob be living in this reality. DO NOT EVER TELL HER I SAID THAT!!! I've got the Mustang and my sled now, so shouldn't complain. But I want one for her, our son and so on and so on. Guess we know who wears the pants (prob not the right place to be admiting this)...
pants are not bad it is when she keeps the family jewels in her safety deposit box you are in trouble.

I was just looking at snow maps for CO looks like southern CO is the only snow over a foot at this point.
