Thank you very much! I get the gut though the pain to keep it strong I have been doing 20 minute power rides on my spin bike, hurts like hell but I know it will pay off during recovery!
Couple last words. Consider limiting sugar & processed foods a couple weeks prior to your surgery. Particularly sugar as it can be an inflammatory. Having almost eliminated it from my diet my body heals in days, not weeks or months.

I was thinking about this as my surgery is December 30th, avoiding sugar is going to be an epic struggle lol! It’s awesome to hear about your success with eliminating sugar, that will help motivate me!

Eliminating sugar and processed foods for 4 months I lost 50 lbs. Now if I have any amount of sugar I get migraines, except beer in moderation 😁

Since the wife went along with the same foods I really feel it has made this Last knee replacement’s recovery so dramatically better then the others.

Enjoying reading through this thread, been putting off replacement, wearing an unloader brace for a few years with great result but it does
get annoying at times. So it's good to see all the good results, still not ready to pull the trigger yet though, just always soooo busy:).

The longer you wait, the older you get and the longer it takes to recover and heal. [been there----done that]

I had mine done in 2020. I was 56 at the time. My surgeon was very hesitant saying I was too young, and I would risk wearing out new knee before I died. Xray and mri showed bone on bone. My wife lost her composure with the guy and went off on him asking what I was supposed to do until I was old enough because me sitting on my butt and doing nothing because it was extremely painful to walk was starting to irritate her. I think he got the hint and surgery was scheduled quickly.

My original knee guy said the same thing, until he saw the xrays 3 years apart, finally agreed to get er done!

I don't understand the thinking of doctors telling you that your too young to get a knee or hip replacement. If your in that much pain while your just 56, why would you want to spend the next 5 years in so much pain, you can't hardly walk? I'd rather get the surgery, and enjoy the next 5 years while your still 'young' vs putting off surgery so you new joint will last until your 85-90. There no guarantee your going to live that long anyway!

I had the first one 17 years ago and it's still going, I was 63 and I remain very active. Second one was 9 years ago.

I have had both knees done. Best advise is to get in the best shape you can before surgery, ask for recommendations from Dr. and the physical therapist that will be administering the post surgery PT. Make sure not to miss any PT if at all possible. My first knee was replaced at 62, now 11 years later still good.
Dr said it was early in life to replace a knee, but all the tools in the tool box had been tried so replacement was the last tool available, other than sit in a recliner which was not an activity I was ready to take up.

I’ll be 62 10 days before my surgery. Up until Labor Day weekend I was biking 10-12 miles at least 4 times a week. Now, I’m in a lot of pain but doing 5 miles 6 days a week on an Echelon Spin Bike. Not able to push like I was before the final damage was done Labor Day but better than not biking at all.

Thanks!

Well Cobalt, I said I would put a little something out there for you. If you check on discussion board on "off topic ramblings" you can read some of the stuff Mezz and I talked about. I had first one replaced over 2yrs ago in Feb . The 2nd one was done this last Feb. both at the end of the month. First one went well. I had six scopes on that one over 8yr period. Along with 2majors before replacements became so much better. That surgery went well, was playing golf 7 weeks later. Therapy started right away. Good pain for a week, then it got better and better. My last therapy sessions were in a swimming pool. Simple, but effective work outs with a noodle. I am totally pain free in that being my right knee. That knee was suppose to be my worst. Bone on bone for many years. I have to admit I beat myself up pretty good playing sports till almost 60. I worked on a big printing press for over 45yrs. So my first one, I was 68,second one done at 70. I'm not trying to sound boastful here, but I'm in pretty good shape for a old dude. My kids range from 45, 43, 20,and17. Obviously my 2nd wife much younger than me. I have been a single dad last10 yrs. I think it helps keeps me young, at least that is what I keep telling myself. I did coach all the kids in sports. I live by the song of the late, great, Toby Keith, "I ain't as good as I once was, but I good once as I ever was." The 2nd knee went well but they found that the synovial membrane on the left side was not good and had to be removed. That made it a little more painful, but after a couple weeks it got less and less. In a two week period after surgery, I lost my brother and my youngest son had a car accident. Thankfully he was not hurt. It set me back a little, more mentally than physically. So the 2nd one took about two weeks longer to be able to get back on the golf course. For exercise I walked a lot, and did stairs when I got stronger. I did and still ride my bike, not as much as you though!! Left knee is now almost totally pain free. I was off pain meds 3weeks after each one. I took them when I needed them, Doc said to stay ahead of the pain. So I would say you are going to do great. I don't know if you are religious, but a lot of prayers were sent my way, and I believe in the power of prayer. One exercise I did before and still doing them, are wall sits. So now the news you would like to hear. I have a membership at at nice little course, in far north suburb of northern IL. I have played over 100 rounds since late April. Riding a cart but would try to walk around the greens and tees as much as possible. Now I think tomorrow could be the last time, weather is getting much colder end of this week. I did walk 18 holes twice toward the end of the year. First time in over 10yrs. The goal is to walk a lot next yr. Sledding should be much more comfy this yr. Hopefully we will have snow. Well sorry about so much rambling , but you will do great!! If you have anymore questions, just put them out there. Good luck, Jake
