Tough Times in the Northwoods

Typical lazy baby boomer answer. Why bother going through the work of reading the research of people with advanced degrees and data based evidence when you can rely on your old tired stereotypes? Its really easy to blame the other, much harder to blame yourself.
This is not a liberal v. conservative idea; its just common sense. I suspect your one of those guys who know's better than your doctor too!

College costs are exponentially higher today because of your generations unwillingness to support higher education or really public education in general. Hold yourself accountable.

Post doc's work for poverty wages for years and its a real shame. Those people deserve everything they get.

Again, don't ever tell me I don't work hard. I worked 40 a week in Tool and Die to support my education and I'm still sitting loans from a decade ago. Working your way through school is more the norm now than it ever was at any point in the past.

You are right though, man isn't smart enough to change the weather, but they are certainly dumb enough to pretend nothing's happening!

I hear all the EXPERTS in government telling us war is peace, up is down, huge deficits are normal, the weather is due to climate change etc. If they are so smart and good leaders, why is there so much corruption, distrust and things in such disarray? The school cost is due to financial promises that cannot be met in the future. I didn't sign up to pay for their entitlements or yours. The guaranteed benefits to tenured "professors" who don't actually teach some of the classes is testament to how corrupted the system has become.

Hold the politicians accountable with their unkept promises. As they say "there is one born every minute".

On another note, YOU made the decision to go into debt and nobody on this board forced you to take on the load. So if you think someone my age has not taken the time and wisdom to consider the direction this country has devolved into, and we OWE you something, forgetaboutit.

I helped send my 2 kids to college. One to Europe for a degree in statistics, and another for mining and engineering. I paid 1/3rd for each. After that they are on their own. Without some hardship and responsibility, I have not taught them what life is all about. The more debt they took on means that they are indebted for a longer given time. We all have choices and need to choose carefully. And not all good paying jobs have to have a degree from a prestigious university. All gen ed classes can be taken at the local college at a reduced cost for young kids. Basically, common sense is not so common anymore.

Wife read your first post, and wanted to "go off". Didn't want me to get in trouble, so she went shopping instead. You're an expert, so I'll leave you to your own devices. I'm sure you'll go far.

I'll leave you with this parting thought....back in the 70's, during the Arab oil embargo, the price of gas at the pump went from $0.259/gallon to over a buck with gas lines and rationing. Your environmental "geniuses" and so called "experts" told us that fossil fuels were a finite resource and we'd be completely OUT of fuel for our vehicles in 30 years if we didn't conserve, and find alternate sources of energy. Here we are nearly 50 years later and their high intellect has been proven to be something you could attain from a cracker jack box, as it turns out fossil fuels are regenerative. USA now the largest producer of oil, and the largest deposits ever, have just been discovered in Texas due to the fracking/shale oil technology that these same professors and politicians said were harmful to the environment. Gas at the pump sits at lowest in 20 years....turns out "your" experts weren't so smart after all....just like Gore said the polar ice caps would melt by 2020. Solar and wind technology are still not capable of being viable, and good old fossil fuels win the day. It's all a scam, and someday you'll wake up and realize you want your money back for that "higher" education sold to you by the universities that weren't any more qualified to teach you their theories about science, than they are their own flawed, theoretical, environmental impacts over the next 100 years. I still drive a gas guzzler, and look to add an even bigger one in a year or so...one that runs on 100LL, and uses about a gallon for every 10-12 nautical miles, at 10,000 ft AGL. Great country isn't it? Cheers!

I'm trying really hard not to break the forum rules here folks! As far as the science/climate change stuff goes, a wise boomer (my Grandma) once told me "you can't beat a man at his own game." I try to live by that advice every day.

**** I drive a gas guzzler myself because I need it to support my passions of fishing, camping, and snowmobiling.

I could go on about the causes and effects of climate change for days, but that's not what this conversation was about. Its about losing the businesses that we support with our hard earned cash.

We are losing members to our sport and they are not being replaced by people from my generation. I get asked by a dozen people my age per year to take them snowmobiling and they all get turned off by the price. I've been doing this to long to quit now so don't worry about me! But, we at least need to be more accepting of people (like me) willing to offer help. Have a meeting on a Saturday and I will be there. Do a cleanup and Saturday and I will be there. At this point, your turning me and my ideas away, and I'm an easy sell!!

This sport is dying fast, and I want my 20 month old to be doing the same stuff i'm doing now. You don't owe me anything, and i'm not entitled to sh*t. Do me a favor and you'll be doing the sport and yourselves a favor.

Cheers!

I remember being in grade school in the 70's and my teacher told us that acid rain was going to ruin the lakes in our country to the point we would not be able to eat the fish, if there were any left, within 15-20 years. She even had a map showing where the damage would be. My family's lake house in northern Wisc. was right in the middle of it. I remember at the time thinking to myself that there would not be any fish in our lakes when I grew up. It really bothered me at the time. I will never forget that day. Of course, it's a bunch of B.S.

I have been a bartender in the northwoods for 30 years....somebody hit the nail on the head...many of the places for sale are old, and have old people running them...they want out, want to retire...but there are very few people who want to do what it takes. As I said ...alot of these places are old and need expensive renovations done...unfortunately many will probably just be closed...its a combination of many things...some areas dont permit atv-utvs...those areas (mostly in vilas county), are cutting their own throats...we have a whole generation of old hippies who retired up here who HATE motorised sports, and guess who shows up to vote, or at the town and county board meetings when a subject like atvs is brought up?? If they could they would cut off every snowmobile trail as well....add in that snowmobiling is a dying sport...its no longer a family sport that's affordable....so less people ride. Our drunk driving laws are another factor. While snowmobilers are great for business...no business makes it on sledders alone. Your locals are the cake, snowmobilers are the icing on the cake. With out the locals...you wont make it.
And yes getting trust worthy help up here has been a problem for many years. Unfortunately I think many of these bars, resorts and supper clubs are just going to fade away in the next 20 years.
The one thing I cant stand is the "you'd die without us" mentality...no we wont...but if it makes you feel better, go ahead tell yourself that smh...lol....like it or not..snowmobiling is no longer the be all end all for the northwoods.

...or, at that time taking steps to protect the environment was a bipartisan concern. Steps were taken to avert the poisoning of the water. Compromise is a dirty word now and we'll all suffer for it, at least those of us young enough to care.

LDF180, I admire your effort to state your case but there are a lot of dead-enders on here. Each time they lament the future of the sport the conversation quickly takes a familiar turn. If you don't tow the party line you're quickly dismissed. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that club?

Acid rain was a bipartisan win, CFC's and the Ozone layer was a bipartisan win. End of story. You don't hear about acid rain washing out N WI lakes because somebody had the balls to do something about it. You don't hear about a depleted Ozone layer cause guess what... we stopped using CFC's. These were not personal decisions, they were government driven policy decisions. None of us private citizens had a role in pumping CFC's into the ozone layer. And as soon as they were gone, nobody cared except for the corps that invested in the defunct technology.

Like mentioned it’s every where

Including one of my favorite Friday Night Fish in Green Bay last year May 2018

HOWARD (WLUK)-- After 55 years of Friday night fish fries, Farr's Grove in Howard closed Friday night.

The restaurant and bar had been in the Farr family since 1963 and since then it became a staple in the Green Bay area.
Dea Farr and her husband, Jerry, put their business up for sale in 2017. They said they were ready to retire.

I was told no one inside the family , outside the family wanted anything to Doo with it

And then if someone was to purchase it , wouldn’t they have to stick $$$$$$ huge amounts into it for current codes ?

The SNOWMOBILE trails system was developed by a bunch of us lowly Joe lunchbox types to get our machines from warm spot to warm spot which was a bar/restaurant most of the time. Real primal but that was the drive. Prior to snowmobiling, the Northwoods tourism establishments went into hibernation for the winter months. The end to this sport will be a social issue influenced by higher education that is for the most part full of itself.
The climate change whores are in it for the revenue they want to suck out of the economy.
Always follow the money.

The simple fact here is that people in my generation (millennial or whatever you want to call it) do not have as much disposable income as the boomers did. In order for us to get a good job college is a must and we get stuck paying $500-$1000 a month in student loans well into our 30's. That's $500 less per month that we can spend on hotels, gas, and sleds.

That said, I live in a real small house so I can afford 3 sleds and a fishing boat. I barely have enough disposable income as Manufacturing Engineer who specializes in CNC and Robotic Automation.

Second point about club participation and aging baby boomer volunteers. You are your own worst enemy. I'm 30 years old, fit, active and willing to help, but all of my clubs meetings are on Mondays, and the clean up events are always midweek. Most people just starting out in their careers only get 10 days of vacation and they're not going to blow it going to meetings and clean ups on weekdays. HAVE THE MEETINGS ON SATURDAY PEOPLE!!!

I'm a fisherman and I have seen the walleye decline first hand in the Northwoods for my entire life.
Get over the racist notion that the Natives are spearing all the walleye. First, they're not going to stop no matter how much you b*tch. Second, recreational (non-native) harvest is nearly ten times the amount taken by the Natives.

Do your research and you will find that the number one culprit in the decline of walleye population is climate change and habitat loss. Thanks again to the boomers for decades of reckless lake shore development and ignoring the overwhelming consensus of the world's climate scientists.

I take extreme offense to anyone who says my generation doesn't work hard. We are more educated as a whole and have different challenges than your generation. Get over it.

If you want our help, stop blaming us and start working with us!
I can tell you are college educated! I would ask for some of that money back if you really think the bs at your college that you, as a human, can do anything to change the weather. And its not a consensus with anybody that climate change is even occuring, or if it is, has anything to do with mankind. And no,you do not have to go to college to make money or have disposable income. That is the biggest line of bs in your whole post. In fact, its more accurate to say you are better off if you don't, but rather go to a technical college or learn a trade and stay out of debt than to go to college and get your headed pounded with worthless info like climate change and safe spaces and all the liberal bs that they teach nowdays.

Knowing that you are in a upfront face to face customer service job I agree with
most of what you are saying.

BUT I/we personally never walked into a pitstop thinking you ppl NEED ME.....far from that, I am just happy as heck you are here ....on the trail....where I NEED YOU. I think that if some folks come off that way it stinks.

Amen to that

I tried to stay in the rules guys but gloves are coming off.

Say it with me folks; THE BEST WAY TO GET AHEAD IS WITH A COLLEGE EDUCATION!!!

That is statistically proven fact, whether you like it or not. No, I will not do your homework for you because you obviously can't do it on your own.

I come from a long line of tradesman and farmers. Simply stated, people with Bachelor's degrees earn more money than those without. Do the math.
But I keep having the same conversation with knuckle draggers like you. Apparently 2 + 2 does not equal 4 if you hang your *** far enough off the porch.

You will get old and die, think about what you leave the rest of us. Have a conscious. I will preach to you because you can never prove me wrong with data based evidence.

I did choose to insult baby boomers because you left my generation a GIANT mess to clean up. I will continue to insult baby boomers until some of you condemn the asinine among you that make idiotic comments like the one above. As I see in media coverage every damn day, none of you seem unwilling to insult my generation, and I think you should be held to the same standard.

Smells like my avocado toast is burning, better go check on it.

P.S. renegade, I am an actual Tool and Die maker, I am tradesman, sorry I invaded your SAFE SPACE.

Have a safe night, Snowflake
