Trail permit thoughts

Throw this in the mix too.. I recently purchased a new aluminum 7x19 foot inline Stealth trailer and if I use it strictly in WI (I live in Green Bay), I do not have to title and put a plate on it because it is so light. But since I will leave the State and go to Watersmeet to unload a few times to ride up to Copper Harbor, I have to title and put a plate on it. Freeken silly Government bologna.

Never registered and have always went "UP" there and never had a problem.....

Actually you would only have to register and title that trailer if you were a MI resident with MI plated vehicles. Vehicles plated in WI pulling WI trailers with no plates is absolutely legal as long as that trailer does not need to be plated in WI. Now, if you have a MI plated truck and pulling a supposed trailer from WI, you will more than likely be ticketed.

That was explanation to me from a MI State patrol last year when pulled over for exact thing. If you have MI plates on truck how do they know that you "borrowed" a WI trailer from Uncle Louie, the neighbor or your really really, really, nice dealer?

This is accurate. My buddy used to travel to Indiana a bunch with his Jetski to his parents lake house. He would get pulled over almost every time. Worst part is it would always take an absorbant amount of time before the Officer would get the regulations straight. You just better be sure your trailer does not need WI licensing and you will be good to go despite the inconvienience of being pulled over by Police who are unaware of the WI regs. The following leads me to believe your trailer "may" need licensing.

Trailers If the combined weight of your trailer and ATV exceeds 3,000 lbs., you must title it by sending:

•The original Certificate of Title or Manufacturers Statement of Origin (MSO). Make sure it's signed by the dealer or previous owner.
•A completed Wisconsin Title and License Plate Application (Form MV1).•License plate fees, if applicable (plates stay with the trailer).
•Title fee based on weight.•Sales tax.
•Local sales tax, if applicable.
•Check or money order made out to Registration Fee Trust.
Mail to the address on the form

I'm numb to the entire trail permit cost.. I'll ride both UPMI and WI trails in 2015/2016 season so just purchase the permits stick on windshield and I'm good to go as soon as trails open. I have to pay to play so just go with it as a necessary cost to ride both states.

4x . I ride Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Ontario and even Michigan each year. Cost of doing business.

I'm not "numb like WD is all the time but it's just a cost of riding. You think grooming those trails is done for FREE? Most (not anybody on JD) think they are just put in by the various state DNR's. That is just TFF.

Wouldn't it be nice to have the same enthusiasm for people to join our club here in east central WI when they sled through our system of trails. Everybody needs to support clubs where they ride.

I was thinking about ways to support all the clubs in all the counties I ride.
Here's a thought, not sure if it'd go over or not.
If there were donation boxes in each club area I would be inclined to give a buck or two for each club area I ride in. Now that doesn't sound like much, but if every rider did it, it may make a big difference in club suport. Not sure on security of donation boxes on trail, so maybe at a location on trail. Gas station, bar, restaurants. With signs on trails, st intersections indicating donation spots where donation boxes located. If it was widespread I think people's would get used to it and be willing to help fund, even having paid trail pass.

Maybe with all the same consistent headline banner IF YOU LIKE OUR TRAILS PLEASE DONATE SO WE CAN KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Any thoughts on this idea? Good, Bad, Not Feasible?

cost of doing "business"? business is when you provide a good or service and hopefully sell it for a profit. buying trail permits in 4 different states and two different countries is well...something else--how do you even get all those stickers on your sled ? is it a two up? pls show pics

LOL A two up has no more hood than any other sled.

The complaint about stickers just cracks me up. Who cares! Pay to play, go ride when you can where you can.

I stuff donation boxes whenever I can but with that being said I saw a guy pull my donation out of a box & buy a beer in Clark County. I was all geared up & good to go only came back in bar to drain the snake while sleds were warming up. Since then I'm never sure if that box/jar money ever gets to the club?

Since I ride a long track and I should not be on the trails I feel as I should not have to pay for a trail permit....LOL

Been saying it for a long time.....I'd be very happy if WI charged what Ontario charges. More money = better trails, trail systems and people PAID to do it.

I don't think Ontario's trail system is run by volunteers like they are in WI. Everybody is PAID to "run" the trail systems there. I wouldn't be surprised given the aging volunteer population in WI that we are forced to go to an all paid system.

And Ontario's Permit cost is a bargain right now with the exchange rate at roughly 1 CND to .70 USD And they give you a break if you order before Nov1 and Dec1.
Before Nov1=187.50*(.7)=131.25USD/yr
Before Dec1=210*(.7)=147USD/yr
After Dec1=260*(.7)=182USD/yr
And they even have a Classic (1999 prior) Permit
Before Dec1 140*(.7)=98USD/yr
After Dec 1 170*(.7)=119USD/yr
These are a bargain considering the remote vastness and the quality of the trails!!!

Have fun!

My thoughts on the trail permits... I've been brushing and marking trails for over 40 years. I fought for and helped install the very first trails in my home county and at our cabin up north. Helped build the very first trail bridges. I've worked countless fund raisers throughout the years helping to pay for groomers and grooming and grow the sport. I probably volunteered more hours running a groomer then riding. Now that its time for me to take a step back and let someone else do more of the trail work, you want to charge me to ride them. I quit. Just keep those longtrack snow machines off my lawn. ;)

I'm here in WI on the WI/MI border, didn't buy the MI ATV program since they changed it and won't do the new snowmobile either, plenty here to do...hoping they all suffer and go back to an understandable permit system.

Exactly. I ride mainly with my customers. The Rmk Pro has places on the left and right sides just below windshield area for permits. Wyoming and Montana only requires 1 sticker ea. Idaho eats up hood space on both sides. Michigan sticker goes on bridge of nose below the headlight. Ontario on windshield dead center above headlight. The Michigan registration stickers go just below the 800 sticker on each side panel. I would post pics but it a hassle to do so on this site with a phone. I can text, email, FB picks with ease, so send me an email and I will send a pick of a way sweet sled.

I will take your word for it on the stickers! If you can ride all winter in four states and two countries and write the whole thing off more power to ya!
