Vilas County

Sounds like you are seeing what my friend is seeing. Maybe the snow didn't completely melt so there was still slush🤷 I am going to drive around tomorrow and see if I can find a lake that is smooth but I am seeing what you are seeing Paul not looking like the epic ice I was hoping for.
Are there any Nordic tracks around? Or an area where they maintain an ice trail?

Went for a walk on the lake today, the ice is a little lumpy, not real great for ice skating. I wish I had an ice boat, always wanted to try that. Not much snow in the forecast, maybe a system next Monday? We have officially 2” on the ground. Going to get cold now.
I’m a sailor so always wanted to try an iceboat too. I’m not sure Vilas is good for ice boating it seemed only a couple of days without snow on the ice 15-20 years ago. Back in the 70s I remember lots of ice boating on Geneva lake and lots of good ice for skating too I was thinking about buying a good pair of speed skates to skate from Lake Geneva to Fontana but spent most of my time with the family Nordic skiing.

Today is December 28th, just got back from the Chicago area at around 3pm. So nice to be back in the Northwoods, enjoyed our time with our daughter, her husband, and the cute little guy. We have about 1-2” of snow left, it’s a mess, lakes are all melted on top, still good ice underneath. Snow wise, it’s definitely a reset. Temps don’t start dropping until Tuesday but no snow in sight until Monday 1/6. Waiting game for sure, gotta keep the faith, right?
Just saw this on one of our local Tv stations....."We still have a chance for snow next week. However, it’s starting to become possible that snow could pass south of us completely, so stay tuned for more updates on potential snowfall totals."....smh

Not that I personally know of. That would be pretty cool if they did. Whitedust you are not kidding about the ice boats on Lake Geneva back in the day, they were everywhere. Also use to see them on Lauderdale lakes when I was a kid. Looked very relaxing and those things could really get moving.

Just saw on the news tonight that a new one opened in Boulder Junction. I didn't know it was a thing. Looks pretty cool.

If I didn’t live four hours away I’d dust off my 42 year old Bauers and check that thing out.

Thanks for the info. Years ago when the river back home froze we would take four wheeler plows out and make a track in the back waters and of course a rink. We must of had 40 plus one day for pick up games, families on the track, cook out . Good times

Just making ice big time up here this week and for the upcoming week. Once we get a foot of snow we’ll be in the money! Pray for the white gold!
Yes sir...the ice is getting thick....10 to 12 inches is common....currently 2 below zero...just waiting for snow.

Attack, we drove back from Naperville on the 28th and there wasn’t any snow until just south of Minoqua. We had about 1” since we got back, very frustrating, tough on the business owners and their employees. We need a good old fashioned snowstorm !

What is it going to take snow wise to open the trails from now... I know all the clubs are working hard with what they can. Just wondering it is going to take a foot or two feet. I would think with the cold and what I think is there 6" would ge thing open... But what I think is there might be off...

Going to need snowfall in the double digits to get them going unfortunately. Clipper coming thru Sunday MIGHT get them halfway there

Well, I don’t speak for anyone but myself but if we got a good 6-8” the county might be pushed hard by the businesses to open. This is not good as we enter the second half of January. There is about a 3” hard base here in MW but studded tracks could rip through that pretty quick. Need a snowstorm! The more the better….
