Western UP Trail 2 will be closed.....

I think this deserves an entirely new thread. Apologies to russholio if I have offended you by starting a new thread:

Taken from the MSA Facebook page today. Don't kill the messenger, just passing on what I read:

"Well snowmobilers it happened, during the Snowmobile Advisory Workgroup meeting yesterday in Sault Ste Marie, we were informed that a section of Trail #2 in the western UP will be closed next year due to excessively loud snowmobiles traveling on the trail. This person has allowed snowmobiles through his private property for 20 years, this section of trail is close to his residence. His words to the DNR were “you can continue through March 31, but were tired of the noise” he noted that there were very few loud sleds in the past but this year has been constant at all hours and he is done. So stay tuned, the Grant Sponsor and the DNR are not sure that a reroute will be possible due to the rough terrain. Trail #2 is the main East/West corridor in the western UP."

I never got that exhaust thing, it seems to me the couple pounds shaved off, i don't think would make much difference. Is it like a Harley thing, the loudest pipes win. I would think the excess noise all day would give you a headache, versus the little bit of time the performance increase would benefit you.

Ban the can & Support MSA. we need to unite or we are doomed.

Is there any effort to "ban the can" I would totally back that.

From what I've read, just about everybody is in agreement that cans don't increase performance. If anything, they decrease it.

Oh yeah.......cause the manufacturers ALWAYS deliver the best performance they can for the consumer, right?

Now before you melt me completely down, I agree stingers etc. are repulsive but performance exhaust systems, within reason, also have their place.......I'm guessing none of you naysayers ever lived through the muscle car era? Never modified a car simply for the sake of making it different?

It's not the freaking sleds!! It's the morons behind the flippers........and you can't fix stupid..........

I can't argue either way. Never had a can, never wanted one. I'm not a motorhead. I'm just repeating what I've heard from people who sound knowledgeable on the subject. They say the biggest advantage is the weight savings, for those to whom decreased weight is important (racers, off-trail riders).

Agreed 100% that it's more about the morons behind the flippers than it is the sleds.

please explain how your post helps the situation. I suspect you're just joking.

It doesn't. I suspect you're wrong, and that's sad.

Where on Trail 2 is the closing located for next year? Rough terrain may mean Watersmeet or Iron River. Anybody know?

So you really think cans are the reason? I find this hard to believe. I think all the sleds are part of the problem.
How many sleds do think pass his house in a day? What percentage of sleds do you think have cans? 5%, 10%?
The trail is obvious too close to house and two, like Buddha said, idiots behind the flipper with no respect.
You really think this guy can tell which sleds have cans. I think after 30 years he's sick of sleds period.
Yea we all love the sound of sleds, but really how many of us want them running by our house all hours of the night?

Who are we to question a landowners decision. I honestly can believe that it is the sleds with cans that have made this decision. If you have 200 sleds go past your house, and 20 of them are loud, you think he can't tell the difference.

It is time that all sledders get a grip and see what is going on. Loud sleds close trails. Off trail tresspassing closes trails. Closed trails are bad for everyone. It can have a snowball effect. When one landowner sees what is going on, another may follow along. It is time that we ALL try to follow the rules. It is the future of our sport, or not.

I would like to see my kids have trails to ride, but something tells me that they will have much less miles to ride than we have now. If we don't help ourselves, who will?
