Western UP Trail 2 will be closed.....

In addition to issuing a citation for machines over the decibel level maybe Law Enforcement should not permit them to continue to be used from the violation site and have them hauled to an impound yard. Too many people just take the chance on the ticket but screwing your trip over may cause them to think twice before they roll the dice.

Everybody always thinks their answer is the one......even if nobody asked them a question.........here's a concept for you: we already have noise laws in place.....don't need anymore......simply enforce what's already there......you want to play, you pay........

x2 simply enforce what's already there

Whats incentive is there for a landowner to have a trail go thru their property ? Surely he must be giving something up. A property tax break or cash payment ?

When the Michigan trail permits went way up in price, some of that money was to be set aside for buying easements. Can that money help in this situation?

Lol. Throw some more zeros at it maybe.
what don't you guys get? Way up on permits? Buy a groomer and see what way up is all about.
Bottom line we unite or it will fail. Lose a trail and then another. It does steam roll. Been there seen it.

Who are we to question a landowners decision. I honestly can believe that it is the sleds with cans that have made this decision. If you have 200 sleds go past your house, and 20 of them are loud, you think he can't tell the difference.

It is time that all sledders get a grip and see what is going on. Loud sleds close trails. Off trail tresspassing closes trails. Closed trails are bad for everyone. It can have a snowball effect. When one landowner sees what is going on, another may follow along. It is time that we ALL try to follow the rules. It is the future of our sport, or not.

I would like to see my kids have trails to ride, but something tells me that they will have much less miles to ride than we have now. If we don't help ourselves, who will?

well said!!!! i like the "BAN THE CANS!!!!"

Banning the " cans" in Ironwood and Hurley could shut them down.

Lets ban that smellyazzed headache causing skidoo oil .
.that chit will peel paint off a landowners cabin.

Clearly most of us on here aren't as smart as you. I thought that was established years ago.

It's a valid point - those who allow sleds to go on their property typically get nothing in return, and when permits went from $20 or so to $45, some of that was supposed to be set aside to fund easements. I have been a MSA member and haven't heard a word about that since. Maybe the money got siphoned by Lansing.

I like the idea of impounding illegal sleds - might keep the cans off the trail.

This is really bad news! I have asked MSA for the location of the area but haven't received an answer yet. I don't believe it's Watersmeet's turf. I think it's Gogebic Range Trail Authority area and that's a real bummer if it is! Hopefully we'll get the exact area today. MI-TRALE and WUPTA have been trying to connect the trail for ATV's from Marenisco to Wakefield this could take it right off the table. I do know the DNR is trying to purchase some land in that area. Damn, we'll soon find out the damage and what needs to be done to fix it

Oh also the DNR appointed a land acquisitionist for the U.P. only. He just took his job last month. I think we'll see a big difference

To the best of my knowledge, that money is constitutionally protected and cannot (legally) be siphoned off by Lansing. Former Gov. Granholm tried that (unsuccessfully) a few years ago.

See pic for distribution of funds.

I think this deserves an entirely new thread. Apologies to russholio if I have offended you by starting a new thread:

Taken from the MSA Facebook page today. Don't kill the messenger, just passing on what I read:

"Well snowmobilers it happened, during the Snowmobile Advisory Workgroup meeting yesterday in Sault Ste Marie, we were informed that a section of Trail #2 in the western UP will be closed next year due to excessively loud snowmobiles traveling on the trail. This person has allowed snowmobiles through his private property for 20 years, this section of trail is close to his residence. His words to the DNR were “you can continue through March 31, but were tired of the noise” he noted that there were very few loud sleds in the past but this year has been constant at all hours and he is done. So stay tuned, the Grant Sponsor and the DNR are not sure that a reroute will be possible due to the rough terrain. Trail #2 is the main East/West corridor in the western UP."

I have been complaining for years about loud sleds in Bergland. I have even stopped people from coming into my Bar because they were Brapping all the way through town at night. Put some pressure on business owners too, why do we serve people or rent to people that we know are only bringing harm to our livelihood?

I love snowmobiling, but this is a real problem. Loud sleds are hurting the image of our sport everywhere and shutting down a main corridor trail in the busy UP is likely a catalyst to get the "silent" majority going. Businesses in the area need to start letting all customers know and start a "ban the can", may be offer rewards to those reporting offenders who are caught. This definitely needs to be policed more and we need to pressure our riding buddies into being more responsible and respectful.

The state trail is at least 1/2 mile, probably more straight west of my house thru the woods; I cannot see it or any sleds on it in the darkest of nights. Most weekends, I can hear at least a few of the obnoxiously loud sleds roaring down the trail. When I am at a gas station filling up and a loud sled comes roaring in, purposely flipping the throttle, (ringing the douche bag bell) I fully understand how the non-snowmobiling public can have such jaded views of us snowmobilers. I would like to see the authorities step up their enforcement. When caught, the riders of the loud sleds should be told that their sled cannot be operated any further, have a steep fine ($1000) stuffed into their pocket, and have their trail permit revoked until their sled passes the test.

As part of full disclosure, I do not have a stock exhaust can but it is rated at 87db and know once I crest the hill, you cannot hear my sled anymore. I installed it as it saved 12lbs on my sled. It is my opinion that a "race" can has no place being operated outside of private property or closed race events.
