So got out the last couple days and things are slowly getting better in more than just the small area that has been good. Once the groomers can catch up with the new snow and weekend traffic with cold coming in things should get a lot better. Trail 2 around Watersmeet is still thin but going west towards Marenisco then to Wakefield is pretty good trail 1 going up west side of Gogebic was nice so there is hope.

UP Thunder Riders has now been able to finally get out and groom and we will continue as long as things hold up. Most of our trails are ok to pretty good. We are thin on our trail 2 in and out of Watersmeet with rocks in spots. By all means not pristine but we are rideable. Best I can tell trail 107 hasn’t been groomed at all this year as it is done by Iron River club and assume they don’t have enough snow to get out of iron river to get to 107. West towards Marenisco and Bonds Falls north our trails get really good.

Took a ride yesterday trail 13 to trail 2 west towards Marenisco flat with a few thin spots and rocks on grade but gets better west. Took trail 1 up to the Hoop and was fantastic. Took 102 from Bergland towards lake of the clouds and wow do they have snow don’t think groomers can even keep up with it. Silver City to White pine a little rough once back on Gogebic trail 1 it was fantastic still to Marenisco then trail 2 back to 13. 161 miles and most of it was great with tons of snow in the in the LES areas.

Ya no kidding! I have a strong feeling mine will be in a nice warm garage. Good thing is the Kew is usually a little warmer but if temps stay as predicted we will probably hold off grooming as to protect our equipment and drivers or possibly move to daytime grooming.

Trailers are rolling in, went by the food store at corner of 2 and 45 in Watersmeet and there was 13 so far and that is just day trips. Was told casino was booked and can’t get a room and it’s only Thursday. It’s going to be a busy one. If you are out please be safe and have fun.

Got out for a ride Friday started good by afternoon was getting pretty beat up with a lot of rocks showing on the grade. But groomers got out and the cold and 1-1 1/2” of snow at least hid the ugly. Went with groomer driver on Saturday from Watersmeet to trail 13 by Roger’s bar and was actually amazed it was better than I figured. Did pass 108 sleds in that 15 or so miles. Overall driver passed 187 sleds on our west route. Our north/ south driver said had to be 30 trailers a food store in town and probably 75-80 trailers at Casino. Grade out of Lando and grade east out of town are probably the worst of our system, just need more snow.

Taking a day off decided I should post our last week well 8 days. Last Wednesday 22nd woke up to snowing we decided to pack a small bag and take off north. Trail 13 from Cisco lake to 100 to trail 1 west side lake Gogebic up to trail 8 to Bergland. Short break trail 13 north towards Rockland looped through Greenland and up trail 3 to gas up in Twin Lakes 114 miles so far. Wanted to stop at Mosquito inn but was packed so continued to South Range for lunch and at that point decided to get a room in Calumet. Continued north on 3 and stopped at Drift inn before heading down 17 to Calumet. 170 mile day overall pretty good with 13 between Rockland and Bergland a little rough and between the big hill before you get into Houghton to Houghton was bad.
Day two: still snowing 6” on the sleds in the morning. Went north on 3 to 124 into Gay. First tracks all the way took 124 back to 3 then north towards Rockland looped 134 to 135 into Copper Harbor for lunch. Brockway Mountain back down to Calumet about 3 miles really rough at bottom on brockway otherwise good. 135 mile day.
Day 3 heading home 17 south towards Rockland looped Houghton and same area leaving town horrible from the park to the big hill then got better. 3 south towards Mass look like we were going the wrong way on a highway there were so many sleds go north. First stop at Rousseau bar talking with Angie the owner and she said she is now grooming for Superior club on Monday’s( very cool). Down 12 to 174 to Sidnaw to Kenton for lunch. Trail 107 back to 2 to Watersmeet to 13 home. Trail 2 a little thin with some rocks in spots but overall good 155 miles. 455 miles total. Will continue on a second post.

Day 4 Saturday son came up so off again. Headed th Char’s in Bruce Crossing for breakfast up trail 3 then 3 north towards Rockland looped Greenland trail 12 to Ontonagon for a stop and gas. Down 137 to trail 13 towards Bergland bad mistake it was hell jumped off and road ran to get to trail 12 over to trail 101 that was good then back on 13 which was hell again the rest of the way to Bergland so needed a break at the BBB the across 8 to 1 south towards Rockland looped Marenisco that was pretty good for a Saturday afternoon. Trail 2 east little rough until back on UP Thunder Riders trails then good all the way back to home. 195 miles 30ish of complete hell otherwise really good. Sunday morning took lake to Bents and trail 6 to Lando for breakfast then same trails back to home to drop off kid so he could go home. Gassed up again and back on trail 13 to 2 west to trail 1 down to Presque Isle to visit to owner of PI pub. Back up trail 1 to Marenisco to visit Missy at Dutch’s and met some friends so road back with them to home, casual day about 110 miles. Took 2 days off Monday and Tuesday from riding but did go in and work on groomer on Monday and groomed 66 miles on Tuesday. Then back on sled Wednesday the 29th back up to Ontonagon and back for 175 mile day. That has been my last 8 days oh ya in between working on finishing new stairs for the basement.

Lack of snow or needed grooming due to traffic or? Presuming just traffic taking it's toll.
Plenty of snow, and yes a lot of traffic. With that being said I know North Country club had major groomer issues right after that cold snap and are playing catch up and it doesn’t get groomed daily, they do 13 between 137 and 101. And the lower half is done by Gogebic area groomers and I truly believe they don’t have the help to get everything groomer daily especially on the weekends. As I posted on the Wednesday it wasn’t that bad but not that good either. By Saturday afternoon it was destroyed and it is a major trail to get to the Kew so heavy traffic all that plays a big part.

One other major thing contributing to the problem was it snowed every day during that time and a lot which doesn’t make for good grooming it can take days to get it new especially lake affect snow to want to set up but man it sure can build moguls. So a lot if things contributing to the problem.
