Ok have to ask this never had to deal with possible good snow conditions durning Nov in either Vilas or the Yoop. I know private land with permission would be a no brainer but what about public land, FRS & Trails? Lakes & Rivers are a no go not frozen this early. I have a brand new Riser I'm wanting to try & my sled has been good to go for about 2 weeks so all I need is snow & a legal place to ride.Yippee!!! Anybody know where to go??

It's just me but I would think if you got near a trail or even off trail in Vilas county you could more than likely end up with an arrow or a bullet in your buttox. Deer are just starting rut and not even close to opening gun deer let alone the late season hunt. Some crazy people out there an a sled flying by a stand this time of year might not end well.

Also have bow season up north and opening gun season Saturday? Don't know if I would put tracks down anywhere right now?

yup, what radsrh said, there are legal hrs to ride and I think it's like 12-1 pm for hunters to take lunch and than after 5 pm. Last years we had some good snow and rode up to twin lakes at lunch and sat there BS'ing with peeps all afternoon till was legal again

Yes as a cabin owner in Conover , except on your own land or maybe a blast down the street . don't even think about hitting public or private trails in Vila . And the gates are and will be closed / locked till the opener . Be no suprise if you got a warning arrow over your cowl or a bullet in your motor you go ripping down the trails this time of year snow or not .. Not to mention angry hunters turning you into the dnr if they can describe or report your sled .. I want to run up and ride myself early but know way is it worth the risk ..

If the 20" falls that I've been seeing my sled may find its way heading north on a trailer next weekend... I'm on the south end of the storm right now looks like we're only going to get a few inches, wouldn't take much of a southern movement and my area would get pounded.

You of all people are asking this question? Give it a rest until the trails open for God's sake. Let the hunters have some peace, they deserve quality time in the woods too.
Rather than act like some 20 something kid with a new toy.

Bah humbug. What's the word on the ditches up there Lenny? Around here they usually don't care if you ride em but if the trails aren't open sometimes they'll give you grief. Technically supposed to be using them to "get to and from the trails"

I have been told the ditches are a no no. Not much to ride legally till Dec 1st other than a few select trails and very limited hrs. Last year when we did ride to twin lakes and stayed at Krupps waiting for hrs for trail to open many many people came through krupps and we did talk to one group of hunters and they had no problem with is riding. Some areas will not be an issue but at the min follow the rules and laws. Hunters deserve the time to do what they do just like we do and the last thing they need is a sled to ruin a good hunt so lets be legal and respect the hunters. If we get this big snow they are predicting I will ride the grade but only legally where as I don't interfere with hunting in any way.

Indy if you are so pro snowmobiling why would you try so hard to give the sport a black eye? A few years back you talked about running ditches there and being able to out run the cops then you rip on others for doing the same thing. All I can say is opening gun deer starts Saturday soooooooo go give them he11

I wouldn't ride the RR grade unless it was dark out jeez! Quit ASSuming. Is it illegal for someone to get excited about a big snow storm?

Back in the 90's I used to deer hunt out of Iron River in Bayfield Cty. We would always bring our sleds JIC it snowed. When there was snow we'd run the forest lanes as well as the Tri-County Corridor, but only at night.

Where I live now I can ride the Wild Rivers Trail anytime there is snow on it. This trail is an abandoned RR grade between Rice Lake and Superior WI. I believe you can do the same on the Tuscobia Trail that runs from just north of Rice Lake to Park Falls.

Straight from the Hunting & Trapping Digest, page 22: It is illegal to operate an ORV or snowmobile between the hours of 7 to 11 am and 2 to 5 pm on any area open to public hunting during the Nov. 15-30 firearm deer season.

There are exceptions, but those are the times. Please respect our deer hunters!

I'm not a hunter but for those that are, how do you feel about this snow falling right prior to the opener? Is it helpful by the fact that it slows the deer down or more of a hindrance?

For me, it's a fine line. Any snow is good, makes the deer more active, and where my hunting camp is, it's a yarding area. So, we will see 'new' deer coming in this week that otherwise would not live there year long. However, when we're talking feet of snow, just getting to camp, and getting yourself around is a pain in the butt. We're worried about getting our road (3/4 mile) plowed so we can actually get in with trucks. In a perfect world, I would have only ordered up 12" for today, and nothing more.

What r u, Scrooge? LOL
I hunt too, and I know how annoying it is to have deer scattered by guys on machines, when all a hunter wants is some peace and quiet in the woods. We need to respect ALL sportsmen and not be inconsiderate and immature about it.
One year I was sitting in a stand on my property and the FIB two lots over decided to continue work on his lake mansion during deer season. All I heard for two days was that idiot pounding particle board with a hammer from 5 acres away. I felt like using my own BFH on him.

I can't quote the exact times off the top of my head but it completely legal to ride in the U.P. between 11:30 and 1:00 P.M. (lunch break for hunters) and after dusk anytime......I know quite a few yrs ago a group put on 125 mi. after dusk on Nov 30th.........that said, I choose not to ride during those times........too many folks with guns and some liquid courage involved..........

Edit: I read on and see yoopermike posted the actual times.......the midday break is from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.
