I made it to Eagle River from Green Bay today.
206 miles.
4.4 hours
14 miles of missed signs and directions near Crandon.
19 850 Renegade 17.7 MPG on the way north, going home tomorrow.

Perfect trails but can see how deep it is and areas where the groomer got stuck and reversed and went forward.
Met a groomer 10 miles south of Laona on the grade that stopped to chainsaw a fell tree, I asked to help and he said ride around me and have a nice ride.

Say fuji, sounds as a really good ride. Glad to see you got it off the bucket list. This year is a real disappointment for me as I had planned for a lot of time riding. Some was to be with you, and had hoped to get with slimcake, and PD. Had the snow to do so, but it just wasn't to be with what happened and all. Perhaps the snow season will last a little longer as spring nears, and I can some what catch up a little. Sound as if you are liking the 19 Rene 850? Is it for sale yet? Ha, ha, enjoy some riding for me!

I’m not criticizing you; I want to do exactly what you’ve done (only in my own field of work). I’m sure lots of folks on here can say the same. I’m sure it has been a lot of work, don’t doubt that for a second.

I’m saying you and folks like you are a model for people relocating up there. How to do it right, contribute and improve the community in the process. We’re on the same team.

Where we differ I suppose is the perspective of the poverty. Lots of people in this country of limited means who still take pride in themselves and what limited belongings they have. Keeping paint on their home and the yard mowed is not that expensive.

I’m not advocating for the rat race crowd to move to the UP.

When I drive through a lot of rural areas I feel the same way. Mow your lawn and a coat of paint would do wonders but I'm not just talking about here. Rural anywhere or take the wrong turn in a city, any city.
Out pheasant hunting in South Dakota our crew stopped by this abandoned house with grass waist high. Our guide got out and went inside to get something. That was his home.

Its everywhere and growing.

Take the little town of Pelkie. It use to be a nice clean town. It's mostly a dump now.
Take Detriot, same thing.
Take anywhere, same thing.

Again, the section of people you come in contact with here isn't everyone, nor are the homes you drive by a representation of everyone.

I can totally see and relate to your view on things. I guess what I am trying to say is that there is just a different way of life up here. Obviously I cannot speak for all and never would want to be taken that way, but the point I want to make is that most up here do not want the UP to become modern day, mainstream America. Many that do simply move out! There is absolutely nothing wrong with someone loving mainstream America...If that is your thing. It just is not that way up here. I could have moved to just about anywhere in the world that got snow like we do, but I chose here for the people and lifestyle. I have some very good friends that live in places being described here. They are hard working and make enough money to fix up their places real nice. But they don't. Why, because it is not important to them. It is just that simple. They are not lazy in any shape of form. They just are not concerned with how their house looks on the outside! It's just a totally different way of thinking from the higher populated/income areas.

I am all for folks being able to make the move up here, but just want them to keep in mind that when you move to the UP, you need to understand how things are. You need to respect everyone! If not, you will never last. You will either be an outcast, or will drive yourself nuts trying to make things right in your eye. Just live and let live. Be kind to everyone and you will do just fine.

As this topic has been going on, I keep thinking back to a song that was sung by Garth Brooks. I am not going to sing it or even force anyone to listen to Garth sing it, but these are they lyrics and I think I sums up things pretty well.

One night while I was out a ridin'
The grave yard shift, midnight 'til dawn
The moon was bright as a readin' light
For a letter from an old friend back home
And he asked me
Why do you ride for your money
Tell me why do you rope for short pay
You ain't a'gettin' nowhere
And you're losin' your share
Boy, you must have gone crazy out there
He said last night I ran on to Jenny
She's married and has a good life
And boy you sure missed the track
When you never come back
She's the perfect professional's wife
And she asked me
Why does he ride for his money
And tell me why does he rope for short pay
He ain't a'gettin' nowhere
And he's losin' his share
Boy he must've gone crazy out there

Ah but they've never seen the Northern Lights
They've never seen a hawk on the wing
They've never spent spring on the Great Divide
And they've never heard ole' camp cookie sing
Well I read up the last of my letter
And I tore off the stamp for black Jim
And when Billy rode up to relieve me
He just looked at my letter and grinned
He said now
Why do they ride for their money
Tell me why do they ride for short pay
They ain't a'gettin' nowhere
And they're losin' their share
Boy, they must've gone crazy out there

Son, they all must be crazy out there

And its really not that much different in Northern Sconnie - I had a cabin for 8 years, and then lived in it for almost 2 years. People are not as consumed with what things look like (Some are, most are not) as much as the day to day experience. You plan your trips to the "store", you just don't run there every time you need something. So stuff waits, and gets done when it gets done.

It was a lot of fun, if you just go along with how some people are. Everyone is willing to help, if you have the right attitude.

That sounds quite a bit like some of the old (mining) "company houses" up dere decades ago, which leased/rented for peanuts; the exteriors were often unpainted and they looked purdy damn dreary. But open the door and walk in and you'd be stunned at what the tenants had done with the interiors!

Reminds me of what i read the other week.

But it’s absolutely stupid to spend your time doing things you don’t like in order to go on spending things you don’t like, doing things you don’t like and to teach our children to follow the same track. See, what we are doing is we are bringing up children and educating to live the same sort of lives we are living. In order they may justify themselves and find satisfaction in life by bringing up their children to bring up their children to do the same thing. So it’s all retch and no vomit – it never gets there! And so therefore it’s so important to consider this question:

What do I desire?

John not to correct you because you are a special kind of person, but I believe the correct quote is "The LOVE of money is the root of all evil. Someday I would love to find a place to call my own up there. This is a great site, thanks John!

You are absolutely correct. I picked up on that right away but was going to let it go. It completely changes the meaning of what so many people take the wrong way. Nice to see other's know the truth too!

Yes, Yes. I meant to comment on that in my last post. That way of saying it is much different and says it so much better! Thank you for correcting me and pointing that out!

Renegade gone today, something else will pop up.

Money does not make everyone happy. Can it make life easier yes. Happier no. Find what makes you happy. Even if it's a beautiful summers day were you go to the Snowmobile trailer open the door. Smell the air, and say just ___. More months to snow.

Dang 17.7 mpg??? That frosts me.... Has to be something wrong with mine or the '19's are programmed different than the '17's. Maybe you just went downhill the whole way and had the wind to your back?
:eek3:

So, you getting another 850?

I kept it under 70 on the 27th, yesterday I saw a tick under 100 3 times and was back to 15.5 MPG.

850 yes.

Nice,...The NST is a freeway for sure.

Yes it is.
I rode from Gillett, WI north to Laona, WI then cut east through Crandon to Monico, WI then north on 45n to Eagle River, WI.
The reverse trip yesterday was outstanding, 70% had been re-groomed and it really didn't need it; probably getting ready for the weekend warriors.

If I had a trade that allowed me to live Up, I would have done it years ago. Lawn Care season is too short, and the plowing business sounds flooded.

Come on U.P. As far as I'm concerned there is a shortage of good lawn care companies. I couldn't get the lawn care company to do spring cleanup for me. They said they were to busy. Tried again to get them in the fall and said call back after Nov 15th, by then we had a foot of snow on the ground. A lot of folks want spring cleanup, but I think most folks cut their own grass.

I think there is also a shortage of residential snow plowers. I'm fortunate to have a good one, but I don't know what I would do if he was no longer available. I actually had an end loader come twice this year and remove snow to make room for more. I had my roof shoveled once this year and I'm thinking about getting it done a second time. I will be spending over $1,200 on snow removal for my residence this year. I don't want to hear another word about not enough snow.

So in summary very few good lawn care companies or residential snow plowers. There are a lot of contractors that do roofs.

I'm not trying to be a knob about this but there are a whole lot of us yooper that dont want more people up here.

I dont mind if you visit but please just go back home which is hopefully far far away.

I find beauty in the solitude that my home offers. A huge storm is just a minor inconvenience. It's how the majority of you and I differ.....I mean, here we are on a website that celebrates snow and some of you are bitching about it.

My advice to you is the best snowmobiling, or anything for that matter, is three hundred miles in any direction from where I'm standing at any given time.

your not TRYING to be a knob but.......... u r relax, I don't see a lot new towns or sprawling new additions going up anywhere I ride in the UP -in fact most people know ya better be ready to die there cause it will take that long to get your place sold. I would love to live up there too but like most we are just dreaming so let us have our little dream and don't worry about a big invasion

Well if you buy the right house it's easy to sell.

My first home was timber framed and sold the day it hit the market.

My second home was a pretty standard ranchish type. Very near the campus and use to be the MTU hockey coach house. It sold after two showings.

My current home is a passive solar and 3200 square feet. I guess it doesn't even matter when it sells when its time... which is hopefully in two years. Its 5 miles north of Houghton and 100 yards off of trail 13.

And either way about people moving up here. I really dont mind either way. Everything changes. It's all good. :)
