drink the Kool Aid. Never got a ticket there for off trail or speeding (and that's why I go there). They do check permits usually at the motels at night. Gas is far between but so is Togwotee and the snowies, bury a gas can in the snow works well if in doubt.

When you DO...you will pay a healthy fine. OPP know how to lay you out...and you are guilty til proven innocent. Been there done that.

Road rangers in the middle of NOWHERE, along highway 17 love Rich Americans driving their SUV's.

speed limit is 63 on way up, We run 65 pulling the trailer, thats fast enough on 17. Run that road a ton from 98 to 2006 with a 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban with 4 place enclosed, never bothered me even at 70 MPH. Same thing with Dodge Crew cab 4x4 with Hemi and 12" clamshell or Smurfriders 1/2 suburban 4x4 doing 70MPH from 2007 to current. Maybe just lucky??? Did have to leave a guy once for DUI and back child support he failed to mention. and we did do a work visa for a guy with a drug conviction when he was 15. They do check back, way back. Always stop into Jones Power sports when in Wawa. great guys.

LOL @ PR1 "Well Mike you will never see me in Florida in the winter time. My mother just got off the phone with me, she is in a area called Whicywatchie or something like that. Gulf side near Port Richie. "why don't you come down here and visit your mother" guilt trip. she lays it on me every time she calls. I don't do heat. anything over 75 degrees and forget it. I prefer 25 degrees."

I usually tell people 80 is my max. My mom guilt trips me to go to STL in the summer. I don't do 90deg with 98% humidity- and if you are even using the words heat index? Nope.

Folks heading to beaches for spring break. Told them I was heading to the beach TOO - Lake Superior!!

Sounds to me like we're better off waiting for next winter when snow in the UP and all the other places we love to ride is gonna be good again! If not, head west.

It was a long haul, from FL. My brother was the instagator, we skiid as kids, and he said he was a better skiier, prove it!!! So he booked the trip. I wooped his CO. butt, its sad he is not a sledder

no. You can not haul gas cans accross with gas in them. Full sled is fine, oil is fine. I have crossed hundreds of times no problems either in the Soo or Sarnia (Port Huron). It has a lot to do with how you answer questions. I pull up, hand them passort and sit and wait for questions. 1st question is usually, "what is your purpose in Canada?" answer, "snowmobiling". 2nd question, "what is your destination?", answer, "Wawa". 3rd question, "are you bringing in any firearms, ammo, explosives, gifts or anything you wish to declare?" answer, "duty free, one bottle ea." the Boarder person hands you back your passport, then they say , "Enjoy Ontario!"

Going home they ask, "what did you purchase, why was you in Canada, citizenship and open trailer". they do a quick peek for bombs and to make sure sleds are really in trailer. then," Pass" Make sure none of the guys in your truck are wanted for anything, not even a parking ticket. You will be fine. It is no big deal. Only those who have something to hide complain about this process.[/B] You don't need a passport if you get the card that is like a mini passport. Everyone should have a passport anyways.

Well, it CAN be a big deal. And not everyone that complains has something to hide! I take it you never have been delayed over 2 hours at the border, had your car completely unloaded (and not repacked; suitcases and all contents lying on the ground outside the vehicle), seperated from your traveling companions, interrogated and then subsequently released because we had nothing to hide and were all law abiding American citizens. So, this does happen and although P1 implores you that you will be fine, just be warned that they can and will do this whether it is random or they didn't like your answers to their questions.

Oh, and this happened to us before 9/11 and I have heard it has gotten worse since, obviously. IMO stay in the states, avoid a potential hassel, spend American money in American businesses and be happy that when you stop for a burger and coke the slob behind the bar doesn't speak horribly broken english in a french accent.

I agree that it is garbage what they can put people through. One thing to keep in mind though - the 4th amendment does NOT apply to international borders.

Canada is NOT the USA. Let me convey only one of my stops at the border.

Up fishing for a week at a cabin I own near Long Lac. It is a long haul to get there and even longer on the way back.

Get to the border and the Ministry of Natural Resources, do a road block off highway 17 (there is no detours to get around that one) and if you are pulling a boat, or have non-Ontario plates, you get the big signal to pull off thru an inspection station at one of the road side parks. They tell you to go to a spot and wait. When an agent comes over, they separate you and your passenger and interrogate both of you at separate places and if they don't like the answers they really give you a grilling.

Then they go thru your luggage, look for your drivers license, fishing license and unless you tell them you are at your own cabin, they want a camping permit. If none you get a ticket on the spot. While I used to bring fish back, it has become such a hassle that it is not worth it for this reason. So when you tell them you have no fish...they go bonkers. Tearing the truck apart to "find that fish". Really. Since my place is in the sticks and far from any town, often a guest knows little other than they had a good time. If you say you stayed at your own place they ask you to describe it, and then hunt for one of the patrolmen who knows the area and he picks up from there, all to make sure you aren't fibbing. What's your cabin look like, which way is it off the access road, how long did you stay...did you buy anything, how many fishing rods did you use....the list goes on and on.

Now recently they move this whole operation down to the border and nab strictly American's trying to return to the USA. I have no problem with supplying the license and inspection of coolers and gear, but they don't subject locals to this same inspection process EVER. They single you out and they just KNOW you have violated some rule or reg...they just need to hunt til they find it or at least this is how I have felt while they do it. I have gotten into some heated discussions about this with them and each time I tell them that if they come down south, we won't do that to them. It is degrading and presumption of guilt without cause.

Also the OPP will sit out in the bush on a secondary road where there isn't a soul for dozens of miles...no kidding....and radar you on a road that has a speed limit of 45-50 KPH....that's like 45 mph....and NOBODY goes that slow on anything up there in God's country. Yes I know, talking away with passenger, I got clipped on that one....dozens of miles from any house, store, or pull off. Meanwhile why the deed is being done, several other cars/trucks go by with Ontario plates going much faster and well, it would be comical if it didn't bother me so much.

Pretty country, nice folks up there for the most part, but the government is not a welcome committee....they KNOW you.re American, and for some reason, they just extract the NOT SO nice from anyone they come across.

BTW the biggest violators of game laws and speed limits are the locals....and in all the years I have been going...and there are more than 2 dozen, I have yet to see enforcement on the water...or a native car or truck pulled over on the road. No foolin.....

It norms are different there....far more regulation, you don't have the same rights and privileges as in the USA.

There are my experiences, hopefully yours will be different.

Its always an issue, and thats the way it is. I can travel to Mexico, Belize, Jamaca, the Bahamas and where ever w/o the crap when I go to Canada, but its worth it. I mean who else gets 700 inches plus of pow, the french ontario folks hate us, but they are not liked anywhere. But we let them in, go figure. Most have criminal records to boot.

There is always a problem with you group any race into one category. Generalizations really don't mean much. When I speak of Canada, I am speaking of Ontario, and not the rest of it, and I have some good friends who are Canadians and they are good decent people. My issue is with the group who approve letting you into the country and overseeing the laws and rules when you do get there. Just a stark difference between those in Ontario, and those of the USA...primarily the mid-west.

BTW, I have never met a Western Canadian that I didn't like....I can't even say that about SOME Midwesterners. But my mom says if you can't say anything good about someone....just keep your dang mouth shut and sit down.

No, I totally get it. And I wasn't really even complaining about the treatment at the border. Countries have to keep their borders safe and they are able to do it anyway they seem fit. I just wanted it to be clear to everyone reading the thread that it isn't always as easy as P1 made it out to be.

Bottom line is if you want to go into their country, with your toys and spend anytime there you have to jump through the hoops they ask you to.

I suspect attitude and ignorance plays a part in getting pulled over and checked out. By the way America includes Canada and Mexico, we call it North America. You live in the United States. As far as your american money spent in the U.S., look at the tag on your shirt. You have little weight in that argument.
Burgers and Coke with a spanish accent here, what's the diff?

Here's a clue: Never cross the boarder with a jacked up redneck pickup truck with a "cat piss on Doo sticker" in back window. Garanteed pull over.

I have crossed many, many times over the yrs. only time I had an issue was I had a guy answer yes on a question of "Any of you ever been arrested". And then he was the only one hauled in for questioning, while the 7 of us waited outside.

Riding Ontario is fantastic and that's why I am sharing this with you all. Yes it costs more for a permit, but I would spend the difference or more driving to a similiar location. Don't forget Duty Free shopping at boarder too!

I would say from the eastern edge of Toronto all the way to the Pacific Ocean the Canadian people are good people. I have been told Even most the French Canadians arn't bad, just the ones I have met. lol. People are people the world over.

Sorry P1, your suspicians are in fact wrong. It was I and my girlfriend at the time and we resided in the Soo on the Michigan side. We were on our way to Searchmont. They only asked three questions of the both of us and they were in fact answered politely and without hesitation. Maybe you should keep your assumptions to yourself??

And as far as your bunk argument about not living in America, for the sake of argument yes I suppose you are correct, we live in the United States. I guess that means you don't call yourself an American? You must call yourself an United Statesman? Guess what? You're the only one!

And as far as counting the things we own that weren't made in the USA, it would all be a waste of time because unfortunately in the world we live in at the present time our markets here in the United States (like that? United States!) are flooded with overseas products. I was just suggesting that if you have the opportunity to spend some vacation money to go sleddin' maybe it would feel good to spend it where your own currency is made.

And I'll concede on this one! You're right! It's a shame we have to go into restaurants, coffee shops, book stores, gas stations and grocery stores where the person waiting on you can't speak a lick of English. But I also wonder how many of those accents you will find at Tog, the snowies, Yellowstone, U.P. or the Northwoods of Wisconsin? Just a thought.

All I was doing in my original post as I just stated a post or two ago, was to warn the people reading this thread that it isn't always as easy as load up the sleds, stop at the bridge, answer a couple of questions and WOOHOO we're off to a Winter Wonderland. 'Nuff said..........
