why put signs up?

after a weekend of riding in southern wisconsin i couldnt beleive the amount of tracks i saw way outside of the signs. people cutting the corners off by a 100 yards and not paying attention to "winter wheat" signs. or tracks going right through the middle of the fields instead of taking the trail around the field. just because you pay 30 dollars a sled for registration a year doesnt mean you own 50 yards to eachside of the trail. i mean tracks that are going right past no tresspassing signs and its not just a few of them either. worst ive seen it and those people are going to ruin it. sorry just gettin really irratated because i enjoy riding around home instead of going north just to have some wannabe snowcross racers ruin it for everyone

merry christmas

Amen, and I hear you brother. It's sad that some people think that you can't harm anything by riding on frozen ground but when you can't see under the snow you never know.... From winter crops or irrigation equip to saplings it doesn't take much to damage them. I like to think that all or most of the people that spend any time here are of the responsible nature but we all have friends that just don't get it, and it only takes a few to ruin it for us all.

I saw a group of sledders playing offtrail while the leader of the group was parked next to a Stay On Trail sign. I stopped and pointed out that they are ruining the sport for all of us. I was immediately surrounded by the rest of the group and was told to take a hike and leave. Outnumberd eight to two I left.

Point of this post is I hope responsible riders will read it and comment--Then the trespassers read it also, and maybe get the idea that they are not welcome. This happened South of Traverse City yesterday.

The entitled generation? Seems like some riders live for the moment and don't care about the consequences. I also wonder how much of it comes from the instant information age. They can find out where the snow is at a moments notice, drop & ride and tear it up figuring that they may never ride that area again.

It truly is a shame that the few "sledders" feel they have the right to go out and ride wherever they please, not staying on the marked trail making it more difficult to keep existing trails open. Like driving a car, snowmobiling is also a privilege.

It is evident they are not members of any snowmobile club or they would know what is involved to keep the sport going, keeping a good relationship with landowners being a major one!!

The subject of what to do when one encounters individuals doing what was described by Go Fast Or Go Home can be difficult.

Confronting someone, or a group like this usually will get you nowhere.

Probably better to, if possible, to get registration numbers and make a call to local authorities.

T.E. hits it on the head. It's easy to find dozens of threads saying "where's the snow" on many sledding forums this day and age. It truly is the "generation of entitlement" so they think. It's sad and frustrating. And, as posted earlier....YOU CANT FIX STUPID!!! They just don't understand why there is a sign on each side of the trail, and that riders are supposed to stay between them. Is it really that difficult. To all those disrespectful knuckleheads.....STAY HOME and ruin the priveleges in your own area!!!!

Best thing to do when encountering these idiots is to write down, or better yet- take pic's of their reg. #'s and call the DNR and demand that they take action. I'm sick of having to reroute trails (on roads) because of a few morons's actions.

While it is good to talk about this "problem" on this forum, I am guessing that there are few on here that are foolish and thoughtless enough to be involved.

Unfortunately, we live by the affects of a few and it really is our job to police our own ranks. IF we don't then it will be done by more restrictions and more likely lost access to trails.

While some on here might not want to do this, I would quietly take down registrations and drop the info of where when and how --off in the mail to the right authorities. Not sure what effect this will have or whether enforcement will pick it up from there, but perhaps the KNOWLEDGE that we ARE doing that will be enough to deter some from straying and costing the rest of us.

If we don't police our own ranks, we can't really gripe when we lose privileges because we turned our backs when we saw it happen.

It's the only real course of action to take if it is ever to be curtailed. Proactive approach...but not confrontational.

I have often wondered why we don't have volunteers from clubs be designated and highly identifiable WATCH DOGS on given days who simply ride around and report abuse, where the sheriff/DNR can be reached via radio to be dispatched quickly to the scene.

Merry Christmas....ride safely...and remember to be courteous to fellow riders.

While I agree about taking down registration numbers, its hard to read them standing right next to the sled let alone take a picture. I'm sure I'll get flamed but flame on. I think maybe they need to bring back the three inch registration numbers. The new digital cameras will be able to pick them up, even moving. Its getting to the point that I don't care what they look like if they make people more accountable for their actions. I know they helped keep me out of trouble when I was a kid.;)

so to turn these clowns in do you just call tip dnr then or would you call law enforcement instead?? i just hope there are people on here that look at john dees website to get the weather or conditions and then read this to find out they are one of these people that are violating and should feel like a peice of garbage. and damm it all if you run a sign over( it happens and ive done it myself) turn around and bend it back up. that 2 minutes of turning around and bending it back up will save a life

Are you all a bunch of idiots? I was heavily involved in the snowmobile trails for years, even decades. This has been an ongoing problem forever, not just with this new generation. Many of the people that were causing the problems we had years ago, are retired now. I don't think the generation has a damned thing to do with it. There are always going to be morons that will do things that jeopardize the rest of us. ALWAYS! The best thing that can be done is damage control. You are not going to end it.

X2 This has been going on with Farmland trails forever. Is it right no?... but to confront a bunch when out numbered is foolish & I'm always out numbered lol & I have taken on 4-6 & never ends well. A lot of yelling, screaming & jumping around then when I won't back down they hop on sleds & leave in a huff. Just not worth it IMO been there done that & then the next idiot comes along can't educate everyone.

I've been heavily involved in snowmobiling for forty years. And I agree we've always had the problem but it has gotten much worse in the last several years. Seems like the goal is to be the first to track unmarked snow. To the point that I've had people trying to carve up the six inches of snow in my backyard. So yes, I believe it has gotten worse. Just like the quality of some of the posters on here. Everyone have a safe season.

not going to stick up for the dumbasses that cause these problems, just saying it has been going on since the first snowmobile trail opened up decades ago. Is it worse now? Of course. There are many, many more snowmobiles and riders than there were years ago. The percentage of those who cause you the trouble? The same. Just more riders. Just saying, linking this all to "the next generation" is a bunch of crap. My dad's generation was far more wild, crazy, and disrespectful as young adults than my generation. And my kid's generation? Are you telling me they can get away with what my generation got away with? Not with everything being followed and scrutinized now on the internet.

So, to summarize: are there more disrespectful hellions out there than before? By percentage, no. Are there more sleds out there now? Yes. If 100 sleds went by in a day 30 years ago and 1 % of them didn't follow the signs, 1 person went off the trail. If 1000 sleds go by today and 1% of them don't follow the signs, 10 of them go off of the trail. So, lay off of the new generation crap. You all were just as much a bunch of sh#$heads as the last generation and the next generation when you were that age.

The problem isn't going away, ever. Better find something else to bitch about.
