then they have to raise the permit fee's so they can try to enforce the new laws, so the snowmobiler will pay again.

Thats what im saying, if sledders dont/cant fix the prob. ourselves, someone else will and we wont like the outcome.

Maybe we just need to start sending e-mails to Mr. Eddy at gary.eddy@wisconsin.gov and express our opinion on the speed limit issue.

I did, only takes a few minutes!

EDIT: see my posting on page 2 regarding the response from Mr. Eddy.

Not sure how many of you remember those two winters. The winter with the 36 deaths? Tons of early season snow, trails were open early, and stayed open most of the year. State wide. The following winter, when the speed limit was enacted, low snow snow year, trails were not open very much, and when they were, they did not stay open very long. Sled deaths were down to 26 or whatever the number is. Hmmm, guess what little bit of info does the DNR leaves out? Yea, the fact that it was a low snow year. Less people riding, less chance of deaths. But if course they want everyone to believe it was because of the speed limit.

Trails barely opened at all in S. Wi if I remember correctly :(

I contacted Mr. Eddy at the DNR and received a prompt reply. He said that the newspaper reporter mis-quoted what he had said.

He mentioned in the message I received from him that "The DNR supports a permanent 55 mph nighttime speed limit and will not be making any suggestions to make it lower than that unless the user groups also support it."

So it looks like we are o.k. for now.

It was agreed that alcohol use, combined with night-time riding and higher speeds is a big issue.

55 mph is good enough. i actually think 60 would be a perfect speed limit night or day

What about when you get out on a lake?

Or, when you make it to the N WI and hit one of the never ending railroad grades?

If 60 was a all day speed limit I would sell my sled and buy a mountain sled, wouldn't touch a trail in the state of Wi again.....

There is nothing wrong with 55 at nite. This is one of the things AWSC pushed for rather than stricker laws regarding alcohol. You'll notice AWSC's moto regarding alcohol while riding is "Be Responsible",(it's alright to have a few) not ZERO TOLERANCE like MI & MN. Until AWSC faces up to the alcohol problem, and takes a firm stand against boose & riding, we'll have these bandaid attempted fixes which in reality are just hedging the real problem. We all know what happens when we have to many rum & cokes, the sled goes faster, and we can drive alot better.(yeah-right)

You will have to buy a radar detector for your sled, its all about money they don't care about anyone in the state. It is just like Il were I live new laws can't use cell phone while driving can't text while driving, or you will get a ticket, we are becoming slaves.
Look how many tickets they can get you with states broke 3x the price for a new drivers license, from last year, welcome to 2010, more stupid laws for 2011!
I register my sleds in Wisconsin. Il takes your money only a few trails up in north part of the state, West of Peoria Il were I live the nice r/r grade bike trails you can't ride your sled but the dnr does snowmobile down them 60 miles, no BS they have 2 nice sleds I deliver bottlewater to there house, If i do it I get a ticket!
