Yamaha Brand Identification

Not even close anymore with the pro rmk putting polaris only a couple percent behind doo.

Where are the official numbers located? Only thing I go by is what dealers tell me and other word of mouth type things which you never know if they are really true or just rumors. But doo has had quite a run

No doubt Poo is shaking & moving in powder sleds but same here from what I see at sneak peak shows & on the trails seems mostly yellow, then lots of blue too, then equal parts green & red. I know this is not the correct market order but what I see on trail. Funny thing in Vilas old poo iron Indys, xcxrs, wedges all over the place but twisty trails groomed flat old poos do just fine here cross into Watermeet nothing but yellow again.

I arrived last year at the following conclusion after 3 trips to Northern WI and/or the UP...
Doo - 35%
Poo - 25%
Cat - 25%
Blue - 15%

At least that has been the breakdown I have seen the past several years.

yamaha brand identification? aarp card holder... :)

Old farts can afford those expensive new sleds. Plus if your a bit slower you might be bigger and can handle those machines that are heavier. Lol just playing with you guys I ride Yamaha too...

Well if you go to a Doo dealer what do you expect the Doo dealer to tell ya!

Last time I saw any comparison (from some powersports business magazine) it showed Doo with about 50% market share, Poo with a strong 2nd, then Cat, then Yami.

You can find the units sold numbers for Cat and Poo from their annual financial reports, but it's hard to compare because each has different fiscal years and the manufacturers count sales when the shipment goes to the dealer, so the number of leftovers isn't factored in. Plus, Doo and Yami are much bigger companies, such that their annual financial reports don't break down the number of sleds sold. It's very hard to figure out who sold how many 2014 models, for example. I've noticed even the snowmobile magazines say things like, "Polaris says the Pro RMK was the best sellling model on the snow last year." That makes it clear that even the magazines aren't sure, and I assume they have better access to data than the average ricky racer...

The ISMA breaks out the following: "In 2013 there were 144,601 snowmobiles sold worldwide; 48,536 were sold in the U.S. and 44,022 were sold in Canada." But they don't say who sold the sleds, and that presumably includes sales from Jan - Dec 2013 (probably covering parts of 2 model years). I would assume all the sleds sold NOT in the US and Canada are mostly the fan cooled sleds, etc., so the prize of top seller might not even go to the who has the flashiest mountain sled or best trail sled this year.

I wouldn't believe the dealer either - a Toyota salesman told me not that long ago that Tundra was the best selling truck.

At 48 years young I dont consider myself a old fart, I ride Yamaha because they are the best snowmobiles money can buy,
Yup....and you get more WEIGHT, as in IRON, per dollar too! That makes it a great deal. Ha-Ha-He-He-Ho...sorry, got carried away.

Since the Yamaha is the best sled for the money per an opinion on here, I have to assume their market share is growing by leaps and bounds. Anyone know for sure?

THAT WOULD BE A BIG - OUCH!!

only if you do not understand how to interpret stats. Some of us are trying to connect sale to best quality. I remember the Ford escort being a big deal, was it a quality built highly reliable machine, no, but it sold. it had it's purpose and Ford knocked it out the park.

it takes money to build quality. Cheap almost always outsells expensive. You get what you pay for.

Just wondering what's up? You have or had 2 Yamahas as far as I know you had no problems. You also turn sleds quickly to me that would be better for any 2 smoke 600 any brand. Most Yam owners don't turn over quickly don't have to with 4s engines good for tens of 1000s of miles.

Can you rap I rope around the clutch on a 4stroke like you can a 2 stroke or just to much compression?
Theoretically..........but you'd have to be a very strong dude. I know one guy from TY who claims to have done it but I've never seen it done in person. These things have a LOT of compression.

Haha same goes for you. I was trying to see where you got the facts that RMK s have brought Polaris back into the hunt. Seems you are getting your data the same way as me.....word of mouth.

I just don't get why guys that ride other iron feel a compelling need to rag on Yamaha. Compensating for "shortcomings" in other areas?

That said, we're all snowmobiliers. Who's to say you can't just ride what you enjoy and enjoy who you ride with regardless of what steed they ride?

I think he was counting piston sales. The rumor last winter was that Poo had "sold out" of pistons towards the end of the season...they were such a hot seller they were on backorder.

Who really cares though. How many Yami guys wouldn't think about an Arctic Cat are jumping up and down about the Viper? Although I do think that sled looks better in blue!

I was just curious, believe me its not going to change my feeling one way or the other.

I have owned all 4 brands....including 4 ski-doos (from 1996-2005)...and it sure seems to me that doo riders get very touchy about this #1 sales thing...IMO number 1 in sales means nothing.

Ford probably sold more pintos in the 70's than Porche sold 924's...does that mean the pinto was a better car?? ;)

Ride what you like people....I'm riding a cat this year...and if it ends up pissing me off or on a tow rope too often (like my ski-doos did)...I will go back to yamaha.

I ride with mostly ski-doo guys up here....a few polaris, and cat riders too...none of my riding buddies have a yamaha...I was the only one on blue for years....the bottomline is you are going to ride what you like, and what dealer treats you the best....to me...it just doesn't matter..I will ride whatever...whenever...as long as I'm riding...I just see a lot of bitterness towards yamaha here lately...lol

I would say it means something. More money to invest in R&D and continous growing of the company to spend in areas of need. To be honest if ski-doo didnt hit a grand slam starting in 03 with the revolution, who knows if they spend the money to rebuild for free the 800 E-tec piston/rings/crank in 11 like they have/did. comparing sleds sales of the big 4 to a porche(apple) and a pinto(orange) doesnt make much sense but i get what you meant. Being #1 feels good in anything in life, so saying that it doesnt mean anything doesnt make sense unless there isnt a competetive gene in your body.
