Yamaha- CAT???

Ok...I hate doing this...but...Rumors from more than one source continue to swirl that Yamaha and Cat are up to something....in fact one source said " Cat has been, and is continuing to test yamaha 4 stroke engines in their new chassis" (Vector/Nytro Motor)...both stock, and turboed.

From what one source told me....Cat was very pleased with the performance of the yami triple in their chassis, and that the weight difference was less than 10 lbs between their own engine (the suzuki), and the yami triple.

So....anybody think this is true??? My sources (who shall remain nameless)...are very reliable...though I have been wrong in the past...lol.

I don't like starting rumors...but I found this very interesting....and it has NOT gone away over the summer...in fact, guys are still talking about the "said rumor"...IMO you put a yamaha 4 stroke in a cat...and it's a WIN-WIN... The cat ride and handling with the yamaha reliability in the new cat chassis??? DONE DEAL for me...if this happens one will be in my garage. IMO the suzuki motor (4 stroke)was cat's weakest link.
I wouldn't even look at the "yellow" 4 strokes if this happens...lol

Cat is supposedly phasing out its relationship with Suzuki, but I thought that was because Cat wanted to make its own engines. Plus I thought they already make their own engines for their ATV's. So this seems strange, although it would be very cool. It doesn't seem like Yamaha has invested much in its snowmobiles the past 3-4 years (at least). I hope Cat can stay in the 2 stroke game somehow with Suzuki because its Suzuki's seem to be the most reliable 2 strokes out there (and I'm a Poo guy normally).

I thought it was interesting that Yamaha's 120 looked just like Cat's 120 but in blue. However, that doesn't mean much because Yamaha could be buying their 120's from the same source as Cat, IF Cat is not building their own 120. (Does Cat build their own 120's now a days?).

Seems to me I read that Cat is pulling away from Suzy....because they are going to build their power plants in house. This builds on the fact that Cat already builds their own ATV motors. Something about having all the engineering already in place...and moving to cut costs by stopping outsourcing their motors.

I would be surprised if they would go over and start buying Yamaha motors. There would be no reason to pull away from Suzy in the first place.

My post has nothing to do with the 120...cat uses and has used a yami motor in their 120 since 2009 (I think).....Even if cat tools for producing their own Two strokes...4 strokes would be too costly for them to produce...I think cat wants to part with suzuki...and has for sometime...if I remember correctly their contract with suzuki expires this year....so them having yamaha 4 strokes would be very easy, and good move on their part.

And don't forget Cat doesn't have or have the rights to DFI...Yamaha on the other hand has HPDI....which maybe cat wants to use on their new two strokes (if they do build their own).

Everybody talks about cats new engine plant...I have yet to see it....nor see any opening plans.

The plant is already there. Hop on I94 till you hit Opportunity Drive.

Cat buying into Yami power plants? Yeah right! The power plant is all that Yami has going for it right now, if that were the case, the tune "Another one bites the dust" would be the most appropriate phrase. Cat has been mfg their own 4 strokes for ATV's & side by sides for some time now, no suprise there, as such I believe their intent is to get away from the Suzuki 4. IMO the Suzuki 2 strokes are the best in class, I only hope that Cat keeps them for that segment or has something equal if not better in house, time will tell.-Mezz

I think it is just that rummer all because of the 120 painted blue with a yammi generator motor slaped in it.
I do think you will be seeing a BDX drive in a yammi soon

I believe that AC wants to build its own motors versus buying them, I don't think yamaha motors are any better than suzuki's. In fact I also think that their 800 2 strokes are the best out there. Suzuki had ownership in AC and the fact that they would switch to yamaha would be a slap in the face. My 1978 Jag has a Suzuki motor and its still running strong. I think AC has made some huge moves last year and really hit a home run with the new sleds. I hope they can can keep up the good work

I too had heard this rumor, although it didn't make a lot of sense to me. A supposed 'person in the know with Yamaha ties' who was drinking, throwing his cash around, and flapping his lips at a casino in the UP had told my wife this was in the works a couple years back.

To me, it was a route they may have looked at and were probably using as a negotiation point when nearing the expiration of the Suzuki contract and have instead made the decision to build their own motors.

Time will tell. I wouldn't put off any buying decisions waiting for it to happen.

Yep I totally agree with this & would buy a Cat with a Yam engine & I'm on an 07 Attak now. Yamaha wants out of sled biz with no ROI to invest in new platform tooling & continuing with old line up tooling just decreases their 2012 market share what only 8-12% now. AC may have been #2 in 2012 with new platform but needs new 2s 600 & a better 4s 120 & 150ish engine. Yamaha can help in both areas & would luv to exit sled biz get back to core biz of producing engines as an OEM supplier. Really not much different from their outboard motor biz & just supply engines to the OEM boat market. If AC is not testing Yamaha 2s & 4s sled engines I would be very surprised. AC is much better off outsourcing engines rather than trying to build their own. AC has no 600 injected 2s & would have a lot of pain trying to build a good 600 engine to meet next 2016 EPS standards. It would be win win for both AC & Yamaha so I exspect it to happen soon.

I talked with some one this afternoon and am willing to put$100 bucks that it is not going to happen any takers

Sorry guys...but I respectfully disagree with you guys that think Suzuki's motors arebetter than the yami four stroke...that nytro engine is steller...even on 7 lbs of boost (super charger)...its nearly 20 more HP...than the Turbo cat with less than 10 lbs difference ...the Suzuki 4 stroke IMO is cats weakest link...and the cat 800 may be decent reliability wise and performance wise....to say its the best 800...I don't know...some. doo guys might beg to differ.
Cat may make their own engines...but I bet they are looking at all options...I also agree with whitedust ...I think the writing is on the wall for Yamaha .....I too think they are pulling out of the snowmobile business..and that's why I think this engine rumor makes sense

Cat still wins in that department. Doo 800 cranks are garbage after 5k miles...

I agree - put me in for another $100.
Stuff like this is great for the rumor mill discussion boards, but never happens.
99.5% lock - not happening.
