As for the Sidewinder. There is quite a bit of talk of some owners blowing belts. I have been following the SW threads quite a bit on totallyamaha. First off it was thought the rollers were the culprit and maybe they are part of the equation. But what some are now discovering is there might be an issue with the secondary spring coil binding. Not all SW's are though, some have had zero belt issues. From what I am gathering is it's not really a design problem of the new roller clutch so much as a final quality issue. What some have seen is some casting slag left in the spring cavity which is not allowing the clutch to fully open at WOT. So the primary clutch is still closing trying to achieve top end but the secondary should be opening at the same time but stops doing so. This causes the belt to tighten up causing it to snap in half.

Don't shoot the messenger, just what I have been reading.

Those that have not had this issue seem to be happy with the performance. I have heard a few people needing to make suspension adjustments but that's not out of the norm. Not everyone rides the same or weighs the same.

Haven't seen belt issues yet here but I did get my first set of failed secondary rollers yesterday. We got the gentleman going right away and he wasn't missing much performance though I'm sure it would've gotten worse.

ah yes....the low end clutch problem stated above....I know a fix for that too....that setup I said above aboot suspension....will APPLY to ALL weights and riders abilities....a light guy wont push....and a heavy guy wont push either...no matter what....its PHYSICS......not ABILITY.....its RATIOs.....not RIDERS.....and we don't wanna go there about .....HOW.....now do we.....98% of the people cannot understand why and theres been many threads aboot it...

PS....snowblower.....sleds are GLORIFIED ATVs with tracks....google sledding in sand dunes....and its all day....no over heat....no melting....but ya wont know this by sitting on the couch critiqueing people that have done it.....put down the BON BONS boys....emphasis on BOYS

For those with a facebook account the page to join is called:

Yamaha Sidewinder & Arctic Cat New Gen ThunderCat Snowmobiles.

Lots of info on here too. What I find interesting is the roller topic. Many are claiming they are not staying in contact with the helix ramp. Some will have 1, 2 or all 3 spin freely because they are not staying in contact with the ramp surface. Even after switching out to a new style roller. If true, I hope this gets figured out soon.

just friendly ribbin em

PS kip.....that track on the sidewinder....no good IMO....should put on a 9263C....way better with that setup i mentioned and its a 15 X 129 X 1.6 cupped lugged track as opposed to a 1.25 V cupped lugged track...see the difference in design....they come with a 9732H track......not good enough IMO....the cups run opposite for traction increase as opposed to the V is all one direction

I would have to believe that Yam/Cat had access to every track available when they picked out the track for the 'Winder'/T-Cat. I would bet some attention was given to all conditions concerning forward traction, braking, cornering and top speed. They settled on a nice happy medium track which will suit most folks just fine. There will always be a better alternative depending on what the end consumer decides is the most important for the way they ride. At that point the end consumer can go ahead and put on whatever track he/she desires. If it were me I would put on an old conical lug track and stud the bejesus out of it. Just kidding. It was a very fast track though. Not good for much else.

Yep, True Grub. You guys have no idea how much effort and time go into choosing a track that will attempt to please everyone. And of course that's an impossible task. Best you can do is please most.

Well...I love the look of that STX-DX Sidewinder.....that may be my next sled...not sure I need all that power though....I kinda want to see what Yamaha comes out with this year...if they don't have all new models...I will have either a Viper or Sidewinder in my near future...Right now...I'm perfectly happy with my APEX...love it.

nope...the testing was done with TOP SPEED in mind....they assume everyone studs them...that 9263C track without studs will out perform that other one in most conditions EXCEPT a lake run...but it will only be slower by a small amount IF the RPMs are dialed in....but the weight of that other track studded weighs 2 times more than the one I say unstudded....that's more HP to the ground and more torque....and you can keep the track looser for more TOP END than a studded track...and that extra weight PUSHES the sled in corners....the ski steers the machine in a direcction and the track turns the machine....and so with that smaller lugged track they can then claim SIDEWINDER THE KING....but its really not...its an 800 with a shorter lugged track all done up for Saturday nite IMO...cant wait to take a couple down with my 800 XF SNAKE KILLER....LOL

PS...KIP...just curious....you gonna try one and see what you and others say? I would be curious to know if all customers mention something about it being better

Test rode a Sidewinder at Pat's Tuesday and it is a fine sled! Fit and finish looked good to me but most OEMs fit and finish is good nowdays. The SW sitting position was excellent compared to my 2012 Apex XTX a little tight at my ankles but my knees were straight and not mashed to the panels. The hand an thumb warmer controls right there easy to adjust as well as the heated seat which I would rarley use. First 4s I rode that matches my Apex engine seemed very similar in twistys maybe a little less engine braking. No turbo lag seamless power band that I liked a lot. After Apex XTX eps the Sidewinder steering is a load and a half in steering effort and unacceptable for me. The windshield maybe a bit low need to get on a grade to test that and I was in Twistys. Transition from siting to standing was easy but you get up to speed so quickly little point in standing..lol.. Imo the Sidewinder gets EPS and I would be very very interested in buying one without EPS it is a no go for me. All you Apex riders owe it to yourself to test ride a Sidewinder the AC/Yamaha OEM relationship has finally produced a kickass sled that only lacks EPS to be the ultimate 4s performance trail sled.
