Yet another sled insurance question

Indy, I feel for ya as I was in your shoes at 19 (1989) with a new sports car I purchased. I was a mature, hard working, responsible individual as yourself and felt it wasn't fair that my insurance was through the roof ($200mo ouch!). But, I wanted the car and felt I earned it so therefore I had to pay for it if that's what I wanted. Unfortunately, ins companies look at stats and not at how mature the driver is. The only measurement on maturity is your driving record and credit in which the discount at your age is minimal until you're at least 25 years. In the meantime, just shop around as others suggested, try the multivehicle policy, and make sure you are FULLY COVERED as others mentioned too. You don't want to finagle(sp) with switching owners, second driver etc. if it's going to jeopardize your coverage. So, I probably told you stuff you already know or heard but just putting things in perspective that you're not the only one this happens too and that it's the nature of the beast until your 25.

Good luck!

For those insuring their sleds, are you insuring for liability purposes, or for damage/collision purposes? What does the $900/year cover?

I understand if you roll it down a mountain that there could possibly a lot of damage, but bent a-arms, cracked plastic, are you planning to claim that? I guess I see those things as the price of riding and fix myself, but then again, I can't see pouring 12-15k on a sled either. Just curious how or what the insurance is exactly being used for.

I'm 37 with clean driving history and my 2012 F8 costs about 375 a year, full coverage. I use state farm for one big reason, never had to wait on a payment or anything for the 19 years I have been with them. Submit claim and all is taken care of. It's sucks but it's a learning lesson for ya, always check to see the insurance costs for any toy you buy. At 900 a year that really raises the price of a sled. When I was young the toys were titled under my parents and they carried the coverage, I paid for it of course. But there's a time when you just have to bite the bullet and pay up.

I've been with Sentry for the last few years but they discontinued covering snowmobiles this year. American Family has had our house, vehicles, and boat for years and so I added the snowmobile. I went with Comp & Collision since it also covers the trailer. $242 for the year with a $500 Deductible.

Thanks for the responses so far guys, I will keep looking, really does worry me to try to bend the rules to save money but if my brand new sled gets wrapped around a tree or stolen and they won't cover it I know I will kick myself later . I already pay $1150 a year for my 17 year old pickup so why not pay close to that for my sled!

Cheapest I could find my 05 was only $100 more a year. My buddy pays $1700 a year for his 05 Silverado other buddy pays $2300 a year for his 03 Silverado and 00 Saturn car.

Ouch I forgot how much insurance is as a youngin. I pay less than $1000 for full coverage on 2 vehicles and the sled, and house. Erie Ins.

Insure it on your own, full coverage, year round. Use the same carrier as your other belongings for multi-policy discounts. Ya gotta pay to play!! We switched everything to Liberty Mutual and are saving big money compared to the other "big guys"

Do Not try to "bend" the rules to try & save $, it will come back to haunt you in the end should something happen. Insure it on your own & no worries, other than that large deductible you choose to keep the premium down, but at least it's all you.-Mezz

Did Jake from State Farm help you out?
She sounds hideous!

That's why I started the thread really, not to see what other people are paying necessarily. I figured that was the case but wanted peoples opinions on it, so I'll be getting my own insured by myself.

Got it insured today through State Farm. $265 a yr for full coverage $500 deductible could've saved $43 a yr going with a $1000 deductible but opted to go with the 500.

Good price & smart choice, not a significant savings for an additional $500 in out of pocket expense. -Mezz

Indy. Go state farm. Im at 260 on the same sled, with $500 deductible, and extra liability coverage. And I have filed more than my fair share of claims over the years. If it breaks, the dealership fixes, if you break it, state farm buys you a new one.... not a bad deal.

Are you insuring just your new 2015 RMK or did you package with your truck too? Can you give details to your policy like coverage for medical, comprehensive and collision? I have the same exact sled as you. I called local State Farm yesterday. I was quoted $454.43 with a $100.00 deductible. I'm 46 and have no bad driving record or claims from accidents. Can you give me your State Farm insurance rep #? Feel free to PM me if you aren't comfortable answering in public. Thanks Indy!

Indy,

Like muskiedoo asked...What is your policy covering? Is it just your new sled? Define full coverage please. I.E.-How much coverage for Medical? How much coverage for Comprehensive? How much coverage for Collision? What I'd like to know is what do those three coverages cap out at? Policies will vary on those three coverages. $265/year is a good deal for a 19 year old male. Even at a $500.00 deductible. Others on here are shopping for insurance too and would like to compare apples to apples. You haven't described your insurance coverage in detail enough for us to call it an apple or an orange yet. Please reply!

Thanks!
