I have a Dobe O Matic here AKA 75lb Doberman named Skye that has a very loud bark, scare the pants off anyone, NO she isn't trained for protection and that's not why I have her, but she does put on a good front!

I'm with Ezra. We have for years been prepared with multiple 12 ga. shotguns, set up with short barrels, and #4 buck shot. Our barrels are legal. Out in the country at night, by far the best defense. It might be a bit messy, but the accuracy thing is not a issue. And the type target does not matter. Vehicle, human, or animal.

I always have a Glock 27 next to me but its my carry gun also. So everyone that is talking about a shot gun do you lock the gun up when your not home? It would be bad to get robbed and get the gun stolen or used against you when you do get home.

Years ago I bought S&W "police slugs" from a gun shop. The box says will penetrate car bodies, engine blocks, and heavy barricades. I tried these hunting, and are functional. How ever I was told they were not legal for hunting at that time. I still have plenty for defense.

no but if a door is opened in my home I get a alert on my phone. if I am not expecting some one at that time I look at the cameras and move them till I see who it is. then I can really f with them and lock the deadbolt behind them or open garage door .

Most people male or female trained or not can't hit the broad side of a barn with a pistol. I know cops that are worthless with a pistol and they freely admit it. That is why cops always have shotguns in their patrol cars. Ad in panic and even the best pistol is pretty much useless. We have a 118 lb Akita for identification purposes and a 12 gauge with 7 1/2 shot for after that. Hope we never have to use it. You are much more likely to hit something with a nice big spread than a single bullet. If you start shooting inside your home your intent is probably not to scare but to kill. Way better off with a shotgun.

As you can see by the posts there is no real answer, that being said i would stick to common pistol sizes such as 9mm .40 and .45. Why? because ammo is cheaper and found almost everywhere. As far as shot guns 20 or 12 gauge works well buck shot or bird shot all do the job. You don't want magnum loads or + type ammo for the simple reason of your follow up shot. You can get on target much faster with low recoil loads. Target shooting is fine but not ideal for real situations, you need to shoot from various positions, running, walking , under stress to make your self proficient. Just buying a gun doesn't do much but make you feel safe, practice, practice and practice. set timers up at various times and when they go off jump up and lock and load. Your always better to run yourself if possible, if not defend. The last thing you want to do is take someones life, you will go to jail for some time, you will need a lawyer, and you will have to live with it for the rest of your life. Its better to live than die, its a huge choice so make it right.

The wife is also talking about home defense now too. Especially since our sleds were almost boosted last week. I have been thinking about it for some time as well. In a few years we will be full time RVers when I retire, and I will definatly have to carry then so might as well get a head start on the training and permits. Not sure how big I want to go or need to go for that matter. Always had guns for hunting but never owned a hand gun. I guess it's time to research this.

Rather be safe than sorry..... And ready for.any situation than none at all. It goes a long way to.take lessons and be put into stressfull situations so if.And when.the time comes u dont have to rely on the cops or.a dog.
