How many times has anyone actually been stopped? ive been going up to Michigan and Wisconsin since i can remember, about 20 years, and can count on one hand how many times we have actually been stopped and if your not doing anything wrong then whats the damage? you lose 5 minutes of snowmobiling time????. The system before was a joke, i live in IL and would register my sled for $30 for 2 or3 years (whatever it was) and be done, everyone i know in IL did this, I dont blame them for changing it because they were losing so much money by allowing out of state people register their sleds for $30. and everyone is complaining about $50 for a pass???? Yet most of us will drop THOUSANDSSSS of dollars on snowmobiles, hundreds of dollars on gear and hundreds of dollars on transportation and lodging at the drop of a hat..... come on, its 50$

Yep it sucks. Same here bought a pass New Years weekend so I'd could have the sticker and look/be legit but nope piece of paper in your pocket until the mailman brings it. granted it did come pretty fast, less than a week. And the price for out of state pass??? $48..$50..Now I spend about $100 a year to ride a few months in the winter on the Wi/Mi. border trails. I do love having either Wi or Mi to ride in so I guess thats a plus.......Now like Snipes said you rarely see them and when you do there's usually the busy weekends with lots of other sledders around so dont horse around and you should be fine.

When you get them on line do you have to give sled info? What happens if you take a different sled on trip? Info won't match sled. Not going to buy for both.
I can't get past 1st page to figure out cause not wanting to put Social Security # on . Why should they need that?? Driver license should be plenty.
Don't want to buy ahead, there isn't good snow now, to where we are going.
Anybody recall what info you need to give to a person behind the counter at a hardware store to get the paper?

I don't think anyone is complaining about the cost, at least not me. We are just curious why you can't buy the pass on the spot like before and have to wait for the sticker in the mail. Again not a huge issue just a step backwards. I did register my sled also in Wisconsin for a few years but stopped last year because I didn't want so many stickers, I would rather pay more money for the pass and have one sticker.

I ordered mine this last week. Have not received it yet. They only asked for the make and model of the sled. Not the year. I thought it was pretty easy to order. Printed off the receipt. Is what it is.

Yes, "It is what it is" A STUPID step backwards. You have to have the trail pass, but you need to wait a wwek to get it when they have the capability to print it on the spot !! The price doesn't bother me, it's the fact they waste time, man power, and money - makes ya wonder who in the DNR thought this was a good idea - find the guy and slap him up side the head

Cap Step had a Setting Sun trial of 3 years, I believe, we are in year 2. You don't like the program take your thoughts to the WI state elected officals for change. Cap Step is NOT etched in stone YET.

Search " Executive Board Members AWSC "

Scroll down on website and all contact info listed.
This is where us non residents should express our concerns of how Wisconsin doesn't want us to easily stop in their state, where there is snow, get a sticker for $50, and support them.

Noticed the AWSC had a meeting in Marshfield Friday Jan 6th. Bet that was interesting maybe.

The WI Trail Pass has so far accomplished all it set to do. Club membership is up greatly and more money has been put into the trail program. More trail and bridge projects were funded this year than has been done for a long time. Now the SRC is looking at increasing our per mile funding, which will allow grooming rates to increase. The clubs need this money to be able to keep up with the ever increasing cost of grooming equipment.

The turn around time on ordering your pass is quick, usually less than a week. Everyone has the security of being able to ride with a receipt. If it bothers you to ride without a sticker, for fear of being stopped, then you are probably doing something else wrong. Otherwise you shouldn't fear being stopped. I'd welcome the 5 minute inconvenience knowing that there is actually someone patrolling the trails. I understand that out-of- state riders lose the luxury of buying a sticker over the counter, but you still have the receipt. Ride right and ride sober, no problem.

Those that bucked this Trail Pass from the beginning are probably the ones that will always find a fault along the way. I was not a supporter of this from the beginning, but I see the benefits and see that it's working. We need new members and we need more funding. It wouldn't have mattered what the AWSC and the DNR did to increase the needed revenue, there would always be those that won't be happy.

Good post. The plan is fine other than I see no reason why non-resident full price passes cannot be printed immediately at the point of sale.

Maybe the so called "haters" need to tape the receipt to the windshield. Talk about a Busch league move by the WI DNR...walking backwards quicker than M.Jackson in his prime. There will never be a true reading on whether or not cap step is a success because an alternate lesd complicated method of collecting snowmobile revenue won't get a chance to prove itself.

BTW calling ppl with an opposing view, haters makes your argument weak as does telling law abiding citizens to just relax and enjoy being pulled over needlessly....dang my blood is boiling....ever hear of the constitution, friend?

It is 2017 and the WI DNR can't find a way to hand a sticker to a citizen who is clearly trying to play by the rules. This is anti- tourist/snowmobiling at us finest.

, there would always be the haters.
not a hatter and I have not ridden loaded in a long long time not the point . the point is the admin cost associated with the new no over the counter sticker is actually eating away at your diesel fuel fund . yeah it is only a envelope a personalized forum letter and the time it takes 65k a yr with benefits person to sort it all out and do the job . but do u need to be paying that person the money at all? the gas station is making no more no less to sell the sticker or the paper .
prob only the cost of fuel for 5 groomers for a season no big thing I guess.
to be honest I am not even sure how u buy a pass in MN if u are a non resident lol I should prob know this stuff but I don't. we could be just as flucked and if we are I will bust the right chops over it for sure
