Sorry Indy I would run that tripple against yours in a heart beat, not a better sled or motor just faster, so in the end you win. LOL

My brother bought one new in 97 and it was the spx se. Triple, triple pipes and that thing rocked and was hard to beat back in the day. He ran with the big cats and anything out there and it would win some and lose some. He still has it to this day and it has about 7 or 8000 miles on it. It is now a back up sled that doesnt get much use but when it does it runs great!

Indy ,ever heard of the Alcan 200? Triples RULE. This year it took a 260 HP turbo to beat out the OLD triple. Can you say 135 mph trail sled?

jts007,

My brother had a 97 Ultra that I got to ride on a fairly regular basis. I have to agree with some of the other posts in that there is just something special about riding a 680 triple. I loved it. The power comes on smooth and keeps building. Oddly enough, it actually started easier than any of his domestic twins. He had no problems with his and I'm guessing he had over 5,000 miles when he traded on a new XC.

At $900, you probably have some wiggle room to do a little maintenance on it. There has been some good advice in this thread regarding things to look for.

I had a triple 600 xlt triple. These are great sleds and I used to crush my friends 600 twin cat when we ventured out on the lake. He was right along side until 70 mph then the triple would say bye bye. Tons of bang for the buck he will love it.

I still miss my 2000 Triumph....last year of the 600 XLT with a different name. 8800 miles and only changed a few suspension bearings, belts, hyfax and carbides.....had engine checked out a few times but didn't need any work.....it would usually top out at 97 on the speedo, the last year I owned it (1998) I was riding on a sub-zero day and saw 106. Guess the jetting was finally right at -5! Other than jetting it was bone-stock. It got 12MPG all day and was a bulletproof sled....

Wow! I forgot about the Triumph. Very unique machine for the year. Now I have to go back and look at my old model brochures to refresh my memory.

I would love to try out an XCR 800 triple w/ves. Would be the only triple I'd buy. I think I'd kill myself though. I know mrs. running bears husband has one.

My first sled.:)
Only real problem I had was a water pump. Sold sled to a buddy and he still has it. Good overall sled.

My friend had that sled punched out no nos but you could hear him a mile away. He broke the sound barrier on houghton lake a few times.

Great sled. Put pipes on it and you add 40hp, extremely fast. Put an edge skid under it and have the best of both worlds. Buddy had one and sold it with 8000 miles on it never had a problem.
