Indy, a long time ago, before I had trucks, and long before I had my cottage in northern WI, I bought my first trailer. Looked like a deal because it was cheap compared to the aluminum enclosed equipment. But once you start pulling with steel, you will not like it. They are big boat anchors behind your vehicle, whatever it is. Plus - THEY RUST all over. Never again.

Wait for a deal and buy an enclosed aluminum either with a cap, or other. Good used deals are hard to come by, but they can be found, and are worth the wait. I don't care what I have to pull it with, I wouldn't put that kind of stress on my vehicle. There's a big weight diff between aluminum and steel. In the long run you will be putting a ton of stress on your tow vehicle, and those aren't cheap either.
I wouldn't walk away - I'd run.

Buy a trailer like this: http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/rvs/3378526444.html
$2500 3 place enclosed aluminum with a Top Caps cover. I had a four place until last year with the cover. My cover had over 20,000 miles on it and still looked great - it was towed from MN to WY a bunch of times and always over 70mph. The fabric is very tough and will last many years - these are very well built and if I were in the market for a 3 place enclosed I'd buy another one. Currently I have a 3 place open as I have to haul some things that are too tall for the cap (or any enclosed trailer).

Indy, i would check the main frame and see if it steel tube or i beam. If it is steel tube i would be very careful. I have sold many of the steel brands and salt and all the other stuff they put on the roads get in the tubing and rots from the inside out. Take a pick or even a screwdriver and crawl under that trailer and poke all over the main frame, from front to back. Once the tubing rots there is not much you can do other than block it up and use for a storage shed.
If you have 3 short tracks you may be able to make it work.

Good luck.

the steel is fools gold huge wast of cash.
buy a alloy end of story.
U will be needing a trailer soon for more than sledding. going to collage.camping in the summer.going to swaps.if U have a rust POS tank U wont use it for that stuff.U will be installing new hinges blasting and painting then doing it again.
and what will u have a worthless steel tank.
buy the alloy use it for a yr or 2 then sell it for what u payed.try that with a hunk of rusty iron.
better yet listen to your mom save your money and just build a sled deck for the back of that race truck.
