2012 F150 - Blown Head Gasket

Not trying to start a truck debate. I've got a 2012 F150 with the modular 5L in it. at 37,xxx the head gasket just went. Due to the 5 year 60,000 mile powertrain warranty it's covered with no questions from the dealer thank gosh. Here's my question. Is it a common problem - I haven't found anything on the Googletron with the newer Fords? Also, do I keep the truck? I can't afford not to but don't really want a lemmon. Just looking for some opinions.

Thanks.

I know it is quite different but when my 2006 Explorer started having trans issues around 30k I called the Ford customer service center and explained I was concerned about the longevity of the trans / drive line. They were able to increase my power train warranty to 7 years 100k at no charge. I never needed it but it was a nice piece of mind. Probably worth the call.

I would certainly ask the dealer to verify the deck and heads are perfectly flat, no warpage...

Head gaskets don't just leak at low milage IMO something caused it to leak crack or warpage check those heads.

first one I have read about. are u sure u cant afford a new one? I was at the dealer last week and was looking in to a 14 and was not going to cost me much more a mo .
wanted to do it I have 45k on my 12 now.
tax guy told me to wait until at least new yrs before buying a new one because I guess we are deducting over 3 .
I have had 0 issues with my 5.0 one I was looking at was the eco.
I would deff ask the dealer to check every thing those alloy bocks and heads could deff have some kind of warp or could just be a POS china gasket who knows

Man my almost 200k mile 5.7s sure don't have any problems :) in all seriousness I have not heard any head gasket issues with the 5.0s what were the conditions when you blew it.

Thanks for the help guys. Took it in for an oil change and they showed me where it was leaking on the driver's side rear of engine. Drove it straight to the dealer.

now we know external leak, i looked for tsbs on 2012 f150 5.0l , there is a tsb 13-01-10 which addresses a reflash of ecm /tcm for buck jerk low speeds vehicles built befroe 12/4/12 . any headgasket coolant loss into exhaust suspect lean/detonation . but if only external leak make sure dealer looks closely at surfaces .

Never buy Ford or GM anything anymore, very poor quality. And good luck with coverage....gave up on American back in 88 - 89 with corvette and Buick problems on new units. Dealers weren't good either

Never a problem with Chevy trucks and vans in the 90's that were 3/4 ton and 1 ton with 350's (5.7). Bought them all at 60,000 miles on them and ran them up to about 240,000 miles before then sold them off to neighborhood kids. The needed O2 sensors, and an alternator around 122,000 miles and a fuel pump around 220,000 miles. All work trucks. Oil changed every 3000. Mostly 98's. I have to say my 07 1/2 ton Dodge has no issues with 177,000 tile hauling over loaded miles on it. Note: we had 22 Chevy company trucks in the 90's all fleet leased when they came into the dealer at 60,000 I would grab them up at about half price with only 25% of the life used up. Then depreciated by mileage. That made them pretty much free trucks with maintance costs so low.

Had a lot of love for American cars, muscle, luxury and all. I worked at a GM dealer as a kid and drove all muscle cars, plus the dad employed at local GM dealer for 35 years in management. It was totally shocking to me the difference in quality between what I WAS driving, and the 1st Jap car I bought, an 1986 Accord. Do you know how often I've been back to a dealer with a quality problem on Acura's or Honda's since I switched in 1990? I can count on 1 or 2 fingers. That Corvette bought brand new had some weird computer problem where it wouldn't start when it got hot. Totally intermittent - 3 dealers and none could figure it out. So I'd be left stranded for up to an hour or more until the computer reset the system, but it only happened once ever 4-5 times I drove it. Maddening. I considered buying a GMC Terrain about 3 yrs ago, but when i took the test drive at dealer in Burlington, the car wouldn't go over 35 because the check engine light came on and the rev limiter kicked in. Salesmen sitting next to me - "oh, that's a common thing, not to worry, when can correct it". 10 miles on the car and already problems. I'd never, ever buy American again under any circumstance. Or an AC - but that's another story.
Good luck with your problem, I meant no offense, just trying the empathize, as I know how you feel.

be sure it is diagnosed correctly, I had a 95 f-150 that had a small clunk in front end and dealer said it was 4x4 hubs, I said BS and took it to a a smaller shop and the problem was a shock bushing. $92 later problem solved and dealer was $945. IMO, dealer wanted to make some easy warranty cash

I also had two Toyota trucks. Even though I only kept them a combined total of 6 years they performed very well with zero quality problems.

Verdict was the seal on the front cover, and a new water pump. Dealer did a nice job with no hassle.

Thanks guys.
