A parents first call from school that your kiddo got hurt and needs medical attention

I'm not one to share much of my family / personal life on forums, but this was a "first" for us today. Our 5 year old just started Kindergarten last Tuesday, and didn't even make it a week before getting the call at work that no one wants. "Emergency at school", come pick up your child. School nurse did not know the extent of the injury, but thought he busted his arm. I could hear him screaming for us in the background, but my wife and I were 40 and 60 minutes away from there. My wife made it to the school first, loaded him up and headed to ER. I exited a client meeting, ran home and grabbed a special request from him........ (A blanket he hadn't used for over a year) Talking to the wife on my way down, I could here him in agonizing pain in the background while she drove to the nearest ER. Finally got there myself, and was escorted back. They had actually sent him into a Trauma room, as he was in so much pain, they couldn't pinpoint the issue. After 5 or 10 minutes of watching the 5 nurses and doctors work to try and comfort him, calm him down, get and IV in him, send him to xray, and get the juices flowing...................., the picture below was the next result. Morphine Rocks!! (Sorry for the anticlamatic ending, but I had to laugh at the pic when my wife shared it!) Final result ended up being two fractures in the wrist and one in the elbow. He'll be in a full arm cast (from wrist to just above the elbow for 6 weeks!)........... At least hockey doesn't start till November, and it will be even longer before snow flies, so he's looking forward to both when it arrives!!

Glad he's ok but sorry he had to go through that! I'm sure it wasn't at all fun for Mom and Dad either!! I bet he was funny on that morphine, they can say the wildest things as we've seen on Youtube.

At his age he will heal quickly. My son had a similar break around that age and never had any problems as he got older.

Just let your son know that the girls like casts and he can let them sign it.

Glad he will be O.K.

Thanks all. He'll be fine. He was up and at it today, and completely fine operating with one arm for the most part. I'm sure it's the first of many to come.............

Glad all is ok.

My son a break just above the elbow a couple years ago. After they take the cast off you will need to watch if his fingers wrinkle when he takes a bath. If they don't get "pruney" after being in the water, let your doc know. My son needed to go through months of therapy after his break to get his fingers back to full function.

I only say this because your son looks to be similar in age to mine.

monkey bars? jumping off the swing?

Yes. THose dang monkey bars. According to him and the playground attendant, he was on an elevated playground platform and tried jumping to catch the bars in mid air. Apparently, he jumped to high/fast...., hit his head on the bars, and fell to the ground trying to break his fall with his left arm. End result after today's cast and diagnosis was confirmed as 3 breaks. (2 in the wrist and 1 in the upper elbow.) At least he's in good spirits. He asked for his hometown fall colors......

yikes, good to hear he is going to be ok. What a shock for any parent.

btw, I did have my first call from the school for my 1st grader, who will be 6 in 2 weeks, he swore at the school playground. I asked him where he heard it and he said a kid told him to say it. we'll we did get to have a little discussion about it.

glad he is doing good. A couple years ago one of mine jumped off the swing broke the big bone and pushed the smaller one into his elbow. they took him into surgery to set it. then a month later my other one tripped in the yard fell and cracked his arm. Two boys in cast at the same time.
