I have to respectfully disagree with your comparisons. Those are issues, on the job. These guys weren’t working… they were on vacation. I’m in no way shape or form condoning drinking and riding. I for one do not mix heavy drinking and riding. But, Have I had a beer with a burger while on sleds? Yes, and I’m sure every last one of you have as well…
This is not directed at you ICT, but sometimes a lot of guys on this forum act like they’re saints and have never made a mistake in their life. Should these guys have known better? Absolutely. Should they have been reprimanded? Absolutely. But, i think it’s unfair the amount of bad press these guys are getting for making a mistake, not on the job, that would have zero press coverage if it weren’t for their job titles.
You can't have a bankruptcy (civil matter) and be an LEO, but a DUI conviction (criminal matter) is acceptable?
Yes, you're going to hear about any LEO charged with a misdemeanor or felony crime. You should. They are expected to have character rising above those sort of personal decisions. It's because when an LEO is called to testify for an investigation they were involved with, if they have a record themselves the defense has a field day. Makes them kind of useless for a big part of their job.
A DUI is a big deal. It carries steep and significant consequences for a reason, no matter job title or social status. Think DUI isn't a big deal, just find anyone in the military that got one. That's a reasonable corollary to law enforcement, at least LEO's seem to think so.
And no I don't drink while on the sled. Not one, not a dozen. Drinking while operating a sled is a normalized behavior in the northern US (where drinking is way heavier), but if you explained the behavior (alcohol consumption) coupled with the activity (operating a snowmobile) most of the rest of the country would likely give you a WTF face.
