I hear so many conflicting stories. Does this OWI on a sled count on your driving record. Lose your license to drive a car for X amount of months? Increased insurance? all the penalties you would get if it was an auto?

Don't know this for sure, but I think it depends on the state. And if it is recorded, you know the insurance company will know.

Ironic that they got busted on 2-11...But it took till 2-28 for media to report on it...3 tickets were issued to both...Next court date is 3-27...

Props to the Vilas Co LEO having the nads to arrest these two clowns.

A DUI shouldn't be the end of the world for these criminals, but it should certainly end their careers as LEO's. If you steal money as a CPA you won't be a CPA anymore. Lie under oath and you won't be an attorney anymore. Cut off the wrong leg of a diabetic and you probably won't be a surgeon anymore. Getting a DUI as an LEO should likewise be the end of the road for that career.

I have to respectfully disagree with your comparisons. Those are issues, on the job. These guys weren’t working… they were on vacation. I’m in no way shape or form condoning drinking and riding. I for one do not mix heavy drinking and riding. But, Have I had a beer with a burger while on sleds? Yes, and I’m sure every last one of you have as well…

This is not directed at you ICT, but sometimes a lot of guys on this forum act like they’re saints and have never made a mistake in their life. Should these guys have known better? Absolutely. Should they have been reprimanded? Absolutely. But, i think it’s unfair the amount of bad press these guys are getting for making a mistake, not on the job, that would have zero press coverage if it weren’t for their job titles.

You can't have a bankruptcy (civil matter) and be an LEO, but a DUI conviction (criminal matter) is acceptable?

Yes, you're going to hear about any LEO charged with a misdemeanor or felony crime. You should. They are expected to have character rising above those sort of personal decisions. It's because when an LEO is called to testify for an investigation they were involved with, if they have a record themselves the defense has a field day. Makes them kind of useless for a big part of their job.

A DUI is a big deal. It carries steep and significant consequences for a reason, no matter job title or social status. Think DUI isn't a big deal, just find anyone in the military that got one. That's a reasonable corollary to law enforcement, at least LEO's seem to think so.

And no I don't drink while on the sled. Not one, not a dozen. Drinking while operating a sled is a normalized behavior in the northern US (where drinking is way heavier), but if you explained the behavior (alcohol consumption) coupled with the activity (operating a snowmobile) most of the rest of the country would likely give you a WTF face.

Show of Hands! I have never done something stupid on a snowmobile....Crickets

Yup, me included. But I don't Drink & Ride, never. Plenty of time at the end of the day to catch up.

As for the LEO's in this story, they were in the wrong, they got caught and they'll pay the price. I've never had my mug shot on the evening news but that would be punishment enough. These guys now have to face their peers and supervisors, not a pleasant first day back on the job I would think.

We all make mistakes. Hopefully these guys have learned from theirs and are better citizens going forward.

I agree with you Indy, not condoning what they did but they are human like us all. I'm sure that they will learn from this as others that find themselves in the same situation. When I was young snowmobiling was driving from bar to bar drinking, I personally think back on those days and think what an idiot I was for putting myself and others in a bad position.

ICT, so your saying if a CPA gets a OWI he should loose his job if a n attorney gets an OWI they should loose there job and I’d a doctor gets an OWI they should never practice again? Or if you get an OWI when you are on vacation you should loose you job. People are not perfect they make mistakes, they weren’t on the job or carrying a weapon yes they know better and do better being their chosen profession. There should be consequences but their mistakes by no means should be worse then any others unless it is in there contract that they can never get in trouble.

Report I saw on the news said 10 day suspension without pay, but I think that was only one of them.

OWI in WI is not a “crime” for first offense whether in a car or on a snowmobile, as far as i know. Why they are calling this a misdemeanor is confusing because it’s a civil forfeiture. Refusal to take a breath test is a separate offense.
They were off duty and on their own time. In my opinion, they will suffer the consequences but should not relate to their jobs.
