This is what needs more discussion. The big jump 5 or 10 years ago or whenever it was was justified in my view because quite a bit of the increase was going to be designated to purchase permanent trail easements. Nothing is a better investment than guaranteeing future access. From the above article it sounds like most of this money is still unspent, seemingly due to government issues.

Actually the form that MSA sends out to get trail pass and Renew your membership. Asks if your willing to round up the trail pass up to $50. They go on to state, it doesn't seem like much but every drop in the bucket helps.
I rounded up my check to 50.
I buy 4 or 5 of them. I will keep my $10 and buy a gal of oil on sale with it. Bam Indy 500, it's now a oil thread to.

What's the best 2S oil on the market today?
Well having 6 sleds for the family to use, between Wi new trail permit and MI trail pass increase, I'm $348 into 2016-17 season and the sleds haven't even started.....no wonder younger folks turning to other sports.......I look at the cost as my "fun factor cost" I love to sled, I budget to sled, and I'll keep sledding until I cant........just say for those not as committed or willing to keep paying the increased costs.... ie, permits, registration, sled cost, costs to fix, weekend expenses, etc,etc............10 years from now going to be interesting.
X2.... We have 4 sleds to purchase for. It adds up quick but can't beat the time spend with the family.

I live in Wisconsin, am I "suppose" to have my sled registered here to get a trail pass to ride in the U.P? Why pay for Wisconsin if I only ride up there?

Registration Requirements:
A snowmobile shall not be operated in Michigan unless the owner first obtains a certificate of registration and a registration decal.
A snowmobile owned by a non-resident must display a valid registration from another state or province, or be registered in Michigan before it can be operated in Michigan.

All snowmobiles must be registered unless used on private property. A three-year registration is issued for $30. The snowmobile registration number is printed on the three-year snowmobile decal. Snowmobile decals must be displayed on "each side of the forward half of the cowl above the footwell of the snowmobile."

I guess I'll chime in my 2 cents. I don't have a problem paying an extra $3 and I will do it with a smile on my face. But it definitely sucks for the guy that has to buy them for his entire family. Would be nice to see our wages inflate as much as everything else does in this world.

I'm surprised the MI DNR never put out a press release. Anyway this is the formula used and prob why it increased at such an odd number .

X2 I'm numb to increased permit costs or really any & all sleddin costs. You must pay to play but at some point increased snomo activity costs will shut out newbies... I'm in and have been in for a very long time now but if a new activity for me my wife would not approve putting all this money towards my interests alone. I get it and hear her point of view so indeed the next 10 years & future of snowmobiling are questionable due to high costs. Interesting stats. would be how many peeps leaving snowmobiling and why to how many peeps buying in an why they want to snowmobile? Lots of members on JD selling out as we see ads all the time & they say getting out.
we as snowmobilers are so used to paying our own costs we quietly accept the incremental increases. due to the support our sport lends to rural economies it's time we get the same support from state and local budgets. if we got an equal share as bicycles, skateboarders, picnicers, birdwatchers and all the other passtimes that are supported by government programs we could keep our costs down a bit. we deserve a piece of the pie!

We can complain all we want on the snowmobile forums. We should be contacting our State Senators and State Legislators.
There is strength in numbers.
If they get enough complaints and concerns hopefully they will begin to notice.
