We received a flyer today that states ATTENTION SNOWMOBILERS! You will be ticketed for riding on any street, road, or highway in the town of Bergland. You must use the designated trail. Green=Trail. Red=Ticket. Please watch for this flyer in businesses and around your riding areas so you do not get a ticket. If riders are educated ahead of time hopefully there will not be a problem. This flyer is in regards to the Town of Bergland.

I don't think it's unreasonable for a town to ask us to stay on the trails, do you blkhwkbob? I'm guessing they are tired of some doing as they please.

Thanks for the heads up Kip, heading to Gogebic Sunday.

not siding with anyone, but some of us feel Bergland needs better trail signage in town....personally, if it wasn't for fuel or those big beefs, I would avoid riding thru Bergland whenever possible......just my .02

Well the way the message is sent loud and clear, I'd be skeptical as to if any sort of intelligent disgression will be used as needed for newbies in the area.

Personally I dislike road trails and try to avoid them. Sometimes getting from point A to point B you have to take them....IMO mark the heck out them so the newbie can follow the yellow brick road to Oz and the Emerald City. :)

Im pretty sure their main concern is when people leave the gas station and head straight North on the highway to hit the trail rather than running all the way through town, GUILTY ! I could be wrong but thats my guess.

See Utinans' post. Snowmobiling is probably 50% of their winter economy. They need to chill a bit. I remember years ago the trails were miles and miles of three foot moguls. My newbie friend rode onto the railroad area for about five seconds to just find something smooth for a minute. Pretty much a mistake, but the cops came out of nowhere, pulled him over and were treating him like a mass murderer. Never liked that town or the way it was marked.

ha,thats funny,i mean what really is in the town of bergland, maybe a lttle more than 20 homes, probably some older person that wakes up to the sound of the snowmobile going down the street.what to do if you have a cottage home or renting and you have to ride down one of the side streets to get to the trail.cmon you live in a snowbelt with nothing around your town and youre going to cry about a snowmobile driving down the road

In Wisconsin not sure about UP but it is legal to go from cottage or cabin straight to trail even if the road is not legal for sled use.

I think they made the message urgent to save sledders from getting a ticket. If it's a mild message people would not get the point and businesses do not want snowmobilers getting tickets. You all make great points but while businesses enjoy all sledders not all locals do. They look at it as a hassle which is sad because our economy needs all of you to help survive. I think many of the locals feel disrespected and sometimes for good reason. I do not like the attitude that if it doesn't affect my livelihood then we do not need them which is what many locals often feel. Here's a story I'll tell you all about and I'm sure other locals have had this experience and it's why they feel the way they do. I recently rented our totally remodeled farmhouse right near where we live. There is a field behind it which is not part of the property but part of where I live and that field is treated for farming. Every group that stays there my wife informs them to please stay in the parking lot and ride directly to the trail. My kids are home on xmas vacation. My daughter calls my wife and tells her that sledders are riding right up to our cabin and garage which we do not even ride in for the simple fact that our well and water lines are there. A young man gets stuck and my daughter trudges through the snow to let him know he's not suppose to be back there. The father is helping dig his young son out and tells my 11 yr. old daughter to f'off! I immediately in the middle of a sled sale leave the shop to go confront this group and of course like most, total denial and never took responsibility. It's unacceptable behavior. Granted, we're always going to have bad apples but this was a father with children speaking to a 11 year old girl.... We have to take the good with the bad but we do not have to tolerate that type of behavior. I wanted to drive my truck over the top of him and then back up to finish the job. I'm not complaining and these cases are not often of course but I'm just saying if other locals get this time of treatment it will make them bitter. I know we're never going to be able to control it but many of you hang in great respective groups and may be naïve to this behavior but let me tell you it does happen and it's disheartening to say the least. I love my business and our customers but this year has certainly started out to be the year of many disrespectable people. I truly hope it changes and thank you all for supporting the U.P.

That's what we're dealing with now days!!! How do you think that boy will grow up with a father like that??? I really feel for you Kip. Your being hit from all sides. If they were renting from me, they would have been gone!!! Unreal!!!

Oh nos, another small town that refuses to sell their soul to sell me a tank of gas and or a cheeseburger. :fatigue:
Is it too much to ask to have a little respect for the locals? This is not a new issue. Bergland has had this issue since before I started riding up there in the late '80s. And its even been posted on here by local business owners most every year. We lose more businesses that cater to snowmobilers every year. Did they ever rebuild Nordine's? Or is that another business gone forever? Don't give them a reason to close shop, or you'll need to pack your own lunch and gas. I sold my place UP there and bought a place in Tennessee instead. And guess what. I haven't had a single trespassing snowmobiler take out my septic tank vent (and huge orange flag marking it) since. :positive:

old abe, I wanted to keep the situation cool and calm so next time we'll most likely be booked:) A week before that the curtains were tore down and someone took a leak on a mattress. Keep in mind this is a place we put over 75,000 dollars in and I know some of you have seen it. It's all about respect. I don't want this to become negative bashing, I simply want to shed light on why people become bitter with the sport. It's a great sport and great family fun, we just have to work together to keep it that way. Often there are times when members of a crew can step up and do the right thing by disciplining within their own group. That's something we need to start doing and it will go a long way with keeping the peace!!!!! You all know that when there's a uncomfortable situation that if someone in your group confronts on of their own for their actions that is defuses the situation right quick. I know it's hard to confront a friend sometimes or even a family member, but if they put you in that situation then shame on them.
