My intention was not to put down families of 9/11 and whatnot. They have my prayers, I just didn't feel like I needed to say the obvious, and wanted to say bring the troops home instead! I have an uncle I haven't seen in 4 years (he came home after 2, was here for 3 months, and went back) and another uncle who fought for about a year but has been home for awhile and since retired from the army.

I think he was killed last week the high allert at bases around the world. new york high security all last week. the switch up of of leaders of the cia and millitary and dna is not done in 1 or 2 hr

Unlikely, as there was a guy on Twitter posting from that town complaining about the helicopter noise, and subsequent explosion as it was happening. Of course, he had no idea at the time it was a raid on Osama. It wasn't until he heard the Prez was about to make an announcement that he put it all together.

Ironic

Could it be a coincidence that there were 40 people on board Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania.... and there were 40 Seals on the mission to wipe out this POS. I love trivia.
And I love the USA and it's fighting troops.

True, IDK why either. Clinton put the OK to find him I believe dead or alive back in 1998 or so and the FBI put him on their Top 10 Most Wanted soon there after which would put it at 13+ years.

Hey Mezz, where did you come up with the 40,000 KIA figure? It seemed very high to me and I checked and the DoD has total KIA in Iraq at 3,489 and in Afghanistan at 1,208. Which is still 4697 too many.

Just wondering.

-John

OOOPs, got a little carried away with the zero's, I meant 4,000 plus. Edited post. Thanks for the spot check, I didn't proof read.-Mezz

Iraq & Afghanistan casualties vs. WW-II

So to date we're looking at <5000 casualties in over 13 years in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Just to put it all in perspective, consider WW-II:
American casualties on June 6, 1944 at Omaha Beach on D-Day alone numbered around 5,000 out of 50,000 men, most in the first few hours.

And in less than four years, for all of WW-II (1941-1945)
Total US Killed/Missing: ≈416,837 (≈7300/month)
Total US Wounded: ≈683,846 (≈12,000/month)
Total US Casualties: ≈1,100,683 (≈19,300/month)

I guess our military has learned a bit about surviving in combat, eh?
Of course losing even one is still one too many!

If you really want an eye opener, look at the stats for battles like Antietam, Shiloh and Gettysburg. One day battles (except Gettysburg, which was 3) with more KIA and wounded than in the current war on terror, but I agree, one death is too many.

And also consider the Battle of Antietam (or Sharpsburg, if you prefer :) ) during the American Civil War:

Union casualties in killed, wounded, and captured/missing were 2100, 9550, and 750, respectively, for a total of 12400.

Confederate casualties in the same categories 1550, 7750, and 1020, respectively, for a total of 10320.

Total battle casualties were 3650, 17300, and 1770, respectively, for a grand total of 22720 Americans killed, wounded, or captured/missing.

Generally regarded as the single bloodiest day of the war, this carnage was achieved in about 12 hours of fighting. It works out to be almost 1900 casualties per hour.

I echo John's and Nash's sentiments -- regardless of time period or conflict, one loss is too many.

Hey! The ship that got the SEALs to Oslabin, then took his body out to sea to be dumped, er buried, was the one I served on. The USS Carl Vinson, go Chucky V. !
