Consequences Of Poor Grooming?

We did a saddle bag trip one weekend in the late 90's. Watersmeet to big bay day one, big bay to copper harbor day 2, copper harbor to watersmeet day 3. Lets just say I'm glad i was still young and in shape. Holy whoops!

The grooming equipment in earlier years wasn't anything as to what they have today. Not by any means. We started "bagging" in79/80. Yeah, I well remember the 3 foot moguls, and some seemed worse. Groomers had a hard time fixing that stuff. The moguls where not as close together back then, such as the stutter stuff. Maybe due to the slower overall sled speeds years ago? In 84, went from Houghton to CH and back one day. Both ways in heavy LES. Whow, good thing we were young and dumb. But we didn't quit. Many memories, and we enjoyed ourselves. Give the groomers a break.

Curious how this compares to 90's when sleds sales were at there peak?? Always here how mid 90's was hay day for sledding numbers wise.
We keep hearing sledding is dying sport, sled sales are down, yet traffic is just incredible. Heard of few gas stations running out. So how was grooming in 9o's compared to today? Or is it sledders just putting on more miles now days and covering more ground in a day??

putting on more miles -with faster more powerful sleds that tear up more groomed trials but mostly confined to smaller areas the at have decent snow (UP) people rarely can ride around home anymore -that is the big change- not whining -just reality of the situation I think

Yes, all very true. Therein lies the causes of the grooming problems. It is, what it is. Limited areas to ride.

I was going off what I was told by a CO officer a few weeks ago. Maybe they realized that day grooming doesn't work. I was on the Arrowhead last Friday afternoon and the Taconite last Thursday noonish and met the groomer day grooming on both days. I'll be going out again mid week and can report back

We met the groomer just outside of Tower last Friday mid-day so for whatever reason there is some day grooming occurring.:-(

But then the Grand Rapids end was clearly groomed Saturday night as we rode it freshly groomed Sunday morning.

i wish I could complain about the grooming by me because that would mean the trails were actually open.

I'm not sure if that trail is groomed by the DNR, but I read that the MN DNR has decided to do all grooming during the day this year. Can anyone confirm that?

Not entirely true. (Unless the memo hasn’t reached everyone yet)

I will only give my report based on seat time on the 150hp chainsaw.

HOWEVER, what I saw today, this is true out of the Tower DNR building. So my appologies to ‘oldguy’ as what you see there in Tower is what you reported and that is accurate. The local clubs were out grooming everything today. I’m breaking my own rules by posting this, but it was crazy good today in MN.

With todays dreamboat sleds with suspension and such, just wondering why lack of 24 hr grooming is the downfall causing so many problems/complaints and is so important to make or brake a trip or a days ride spending ones hard earned ca$h.
Enough to declare "they" don't keep the trails groomed smooth and I'm never going back. ?

I hope you kept it under 50 mph, you don't need a ticket

Sure always events in Vilas during winter bring peeps to the area but no biggie this weekend vintage derby. Were you riding your area yesterday? The pipeline was the worst I have ever seen it not much traffic. Mini Mart doing a good business but seen it much more crowded no wait or rush at pumps either some sleds parked but not wall to wall sleds. Traffic wasn’t that heavy imo for a weekend Sidnaw to Lanse RT.
the pipe line needs a bunch of snow to fill in all of the ruts and holes. It’s a whooped out ATV trail in the summer.

Sidnaw has been reporting the sugary snow isn’t holding a groom. They also posted today that they have a groomer down today. They said they have to run the one groomer double shift, so you may see it out during the day. FYI, the pipeline is the Baraga club.

Part of the problem is the groomer drivers are counting well over 150 sleds passing them when out grooming, even after midnight they're seeing 60+ this makes a big difference on the condition. You may not see them but the drivers are

With all due respect, no way groomers are seeing 60 plus sled after midnight on a regular basis. Sure it may have happened once.....but not often at all in my opinion. I ride Northern Wisconsin all over and the UP where I believe you are located, the late night crowds do not exist like they used to. My crew still loves riding at night and we see nobody unless we are around a popular lake with multiple pit stops.

We have been having weekend counts in the 600+ range per shift!

This is the struggle with the trail set-up in your area. While tons of snow, everyone is riding the same trail in and out of Houghton. You would have to groom that 6 times a day to keep it smooth.

They were grooming the north shore state trail overnight on both Friday and saturday night this weekend. I don't know about the rest of the state trails though.

Based on what I saw the last couple days, they must be changing their plan. The drivers looked none too happy as I came upon them during the day without warning around a corner. It appears ‘oldguy’ is correct and they have changed their grooming times. Let’s hope it’s a weekday only thing, and they continue the over night grooming on the weekends - I didn’t have a close call yesterday or today, but I can see where it could happen.

Yeah I know Baraga is the Pipeline and was super good last night same with Sidnaw to the gas station from 8 intersection. I consider all that Sidnaw area trails as closest town you pass thru on trail. I give credit when credit is due and both Sidnaw and Baraga groomers were on top of their game yesterday and last night very impressesive well groomed trails very good imo.

That's very good news to hear whitedust. The Sidnaw group has done a tremendous turn around as to what it used to be with that group. There is still some improvement needed by the Baraga Tourism on the 109 trail they groom. Even when there are very good grooming conditions present, many times they will turn around at Alston for no reason. Not good, and I realize that is a long groomer run, but there are ways they could fix that issue.
