I would not have even tried to venture around that mess. I hated to do some cleaner water crossings.

Here’s a pic of the waterhole just northeast of the bear trap (pic not taken by me) supposedly beavers built a dam there causing this issue View attachment 70512
We've been going up to the East since the late 80's, on an early December trip, that hole is there almost every year, the Beavers can cause a lot of damage the little bastards! There has been a lot of people hurt here, it has been just a small dip in the past that caught a lot of people off guard while hauling ass down that section of trail.

Pulled into the Voyaguers Motel in Grand Marais around 3pmE and hopped on the sleds around 4. Took the scenic route down to Andys Seney Bar for some fish, and back. Was a quick and excellent 97 miles! Trail 43 on Seneys system was easily a 10/10, that trail was an absolute blast and was 20 miles each way. Everything we rode in Grand Marais system id rate a 7.5/10. Some slight chop on the heavily trafficked trails, seems like when the rain and warm temps started early this week, the trails were a little bumpy, and then the base froze rock hard. Over the last 3 days they’ve received 6-8”, so no lubricantion issues after the rain/warmup. Was an excellent ride tonight, can’t wait for tomorrow’s IMG_4602.jpeg IMG_4603.jpeg IMG_4612.jpeg IMG_4615.jpeg IMG_4618.jpeg IMG_4621.jpeg IMG_4626.jpeg

Must be some decent snow depth there, if you look in the 1st picture way in the background on the right side the trail sign is almost buried.
