EUP report!

Great report! From what AlgerSorva has reported about Miner Castle is the local road commission has shut down the H58 part of the trail (1 mile). They say because the sleds have damaged H58 on that stretch. Unfortunately no one can find any damage and the Road Commission won’t provide any answers. Careful to anyone considering this to stay on the designated trail and consider your legal alternative for that 1 mile stretch.
Plenty of ditch line there to run a groomed trail. A pure shame. There is a few rental properties along H58 there, so regardless there is sleds running everywhere up and down there.

Hate to assume, but have a hunch the first few massive houses on miners castle rd may have played a part in this.

I was wondering about this, I did see previously that this was a hot topic issue... I truly hope they get it back or another route but I don't think that can happen... It is a great stop and very nice to see.

As promised guys, ride report! Absolutely dumped lake effect snow all morning today (Sunday)

Trailered up to Seney Saturday morning and took off up trail 43. It was absolutely mint all the way to the grade. Then jogged east on 88, mild chop from traffic then up 888/8 into grand Marais, choppy as well from intense traffic. And my god there was so many sleds in town! The last couple miles were a little thin into town but plenty doable. Ate at the breakwall as it was the only place with a table. Left there and took 89 along the lake and it was pretty darn good for a Saturday afternoon. Then took the hurricane trail/8 back east and down 888. Hurricane trail was mint but then we had to take the exact trek back and it was slightly worse as expected from traffic but rideable. 43 was being groomed as we pulled back into Seney. Overall not a bad 100 mile ride on a busy Saturday.

We stayed in wetmore so had to trailer over.

Today we did the 7/8 loop that runs south of Munising and the entire thing was mint and a beautiful ride I’ve never done. We wanted to ride a little more, and I’ve always wanted to see the pictured rocks/miners castle. The dnr pulled the funding for trail 422 over a squabble with the state/county legislation, but it is still legal to ride. So on the way up we took the “original trail”. Between Highway M28 and road H58, half the trail was 2+ foot whoops and the other half was being logged and was fairly thin but managed. Then we jogged over H58 and up miners castle rd. Half of miners castle rd is being plowed this year, half isn’t. The first half is only rideable after fresh snowfall (we were lucky). The 2nd half was smooth sailing. On the way back we just road the edge of H58 to the bear trap and then hopped on the trail down to Shingleton. Would highly recommend taking
This route, but will need some fresh snow to do this. The trail between the bear trap and Shingleton is usually one of the roughest stretches in the EUP. Well, Alger sorva ran both their groomers for nearly 20 hrs straight and got it fixed up, was mint! I think they did every trail 2-3 times and they were running the smooth as glass grade again this morning. Not as many pics this trip, but enjoy! First 3 are from Saturday, remainder from today.

So the whole brew ha ha is really the road commission. Our Congressman has inserted himself into the mix along with the local businesses. The County Commission runs to a different tune. H15 from Bear Trap to Shingleton was shutdown from sled traffic years ago.
Sad the AlgerSorva volunteers spent allot of time and $s creating the more recent trail from M28 to H58. Besides claiming the road damage they allege safety and the accidents causes on the road. Sheriffs have no record of a single accident.

What a shame. Miners Castle was always a favorite stop, but I haven’t been out that way in years. We are headed up to Seney Thursday night for a quick ride on Friday. The Seney area groomer reports are encouraging. We will probably stay at the trailhead on trail 431 Thursday night, then ride north and east from there. Heading back home Friday night.

We returned last night from a ride yesterday north of Seney. Started from Adam’s Trail Friday morning, headed to Miners Castle. Trails were freshly groomed, but the sled traffic was unreal. Probably the most sleds I had ever seen on trails. We had to double back on trail 8 from the Bear Trap and the trails were shot in about 2 hours. We rode up to Grand Marais about 3 pm, crazy busy. Headed back to the trailer by about 5:00 for the drive home. Just over 100 miles, a good share was brutal. On our drive back to Green Bay area, it was a steady stream of trailers headed north. It’s gonna be insane up there today.

Thanks for the update. I'm heading up Sunday-Wednesday. I hope they're able to kind of keep up with grooming it after the weekend traffic.

I do expect high traffic on weekends, but I've not seen that much traffic on a weekend, ever. Plus it was Friday morning. Friday used to be a weekday. In one 10 mile stretch there was hardly a time when I did not see headlights. I've ridden the UP for over 20 years, and mostly on weekends.

Drove back from Rhinelander yesterday and saw quite few trailers heading North on 51. Told my wife it was probably going to be a zoo in the UP this weekend!

Munising area sucks, no grooming since Thursday moguls the size of Volkswagens
They’ve been running 2-3 groomers daily for weeks. Just way too much traffic. I passed two groomers tonight and after 5 sleds you couldn’t tell. They run every trail twice on weekends, if you hit it early morning tomorrow guarantee it will be great.
