Hope you like green, this chassis has a lot of it.

With the satin black applied, the hood takes on a more serious look. It's weird how the shade of the green in the shots seems to change depending on the lighting. Guess it's a camera thing, in reality everything is the same color.

We’ve made the move from the cabin back to the house full-time so I need to break off the project activities for a bit and take care of some fall duties, including the Cub Cadet repair. It is making progress but it’s not ready to mount the blower yet. I think I’ll need it, I have a feeling about this winter.

Kelly, I have a question for the man himself, I'm assuming you looked at that antique snowmobile auction that was posted and I have a question I'm curious you can answer. There is a motor on there I have never seen and wonder if you can identify, the 2 cylinder one with the crazy looking blocky red crankcase and has the 2 Tillotson carburetors with one being inverted from the other?

As Rupp Collector said, Hirth Red Baron 650. These motors are highly prized by a lot of vintage guys and this guy had two, not to mention a Hirth triple!

He has a couple of Sachs SA2/440C motors I wouldn't mind getting my hands on but not sure I want to make the trip for just a couple of motors. So far, no bids on either. Besides, I'm scared I might come home with a couple of Vikings.

I have no idea how a person could accumulate so much stuff in a single lifetime. I’d be interested in knowing if he had some connection to both Viking and Arctic Cat. He sure has a lot of hoods and seats that look like they came off the assembly line.

What auction? When I lived in Wisconsin I had a farmer do some grading for me and gave him an old AC I had, he then showed me his collection of over 35 Vikings!

When I was younger we had at least 10 of the Red Baron engines, they were fast but the crankshafts didn't hold up. A friend of my dads was into small experimental aircraft and had one with the Red Baron in it and went to Oshkosh a few times in the 70's. Also a friend and coworker of mine bought one from us and put it in an Arctic Cat and it ran great for a day, then he was stopped on the lake that night and the sled was still running and had the lights on, I went to see what was wrong and the clutch was sitting on the bellypan and the crank was snapped off outside of the seal.

I know first-hand that you North Dakota riders run motors hard so I’m not surprised that if a motor had a weak spot, you guys would find it.

I have wondered though, other than cooling, what the internal differences are between the 650 Red Baron version and my 650 axial fan version. My impression is that the Red Baron was much faster.

The things I do….

Just walked in the door at 11:10 tonight after a 10-hour round-trip to Pine City, MN to pick up this:

IMG_3425_1.jpg

Finally gave up on the guy that has been promising to send me parts for months now and decided to take matters into my own hands. A co-worker stumbled across an ad for a bunch of John Deere sleds for sale on Craig’s List, including the Cyclone.

The seller sent me photos of the track drivers, which is something I really needed, and they looked great. That was enough to seal the deal but besides the drivers, there’s a ton of good parts on this sled,

Honestly, this is the straightest Cyclone chassis I’ve ever seen. I could see combining this chassis with stuff from the 440 to make a nice stock 440 Cyclone, a project I really hadn’t planned on.

At least all that time on the road kept me away from the vintage auction site.

She's a beaut, Clark!
