Ford Tow Vehicle: Twin Turbo Ecoboost 6 or the 8 Cylinder

I am in the market for a new tow vehicle. I will be getting a Ford but i am torn between the Ecoboost 6 or the 8 Cylinder. I pull a 30 foot travel trailer and my snowmobile trailer. I know the Ecoboost is a good engine but is it up to towing like the 8 cylinder is? Anyone have any experience regarding this?

well I went with the 5.0 it has plenty of juice to yank a 26+v 8.5 mi was a round 7.9 on both trips west with trailer.
no one driving has a light foot 75 to 80 is the norm.
I can tell u the good yr sra tires on the f150s are junk junk I put 25k on the truck in 13 mo and 2 were slicks 2 were past wear bar.
so sell them when new and get some e range ltx or somthing.
I also went with a set of air bags for rear end this yr deff needed.
from what I understand the eco is not much better towing MPG wise than the 5.0
guess I would be torn also if I were buying again this yr would prob try out eco but only if I were going to put in a bully dog to make it a tad more fun.
and I love the ford trailer breaking system. only thing I hate the complete lack of storage in fold down arm rest and the fact that I had to buy a set of $1268 tires 3 weeks after the first set of tabs .

I have the Ecoboost. I have towed our inline R&R Power Sport two Vector LTX's 60-70 mph and hardly tell the trailer is back there. The torque resembles the 2001 Duramax Diesel I had a few years back. I love the power. I also tow a 20' Hurricane Boat weighing about 3,600 lb dry weight with no problem, hardly tell it is back there. No matter what I am towing I get about 12 -14 Mpg, and not towing, about 19-20 Mpg. I only have 10K on the Ecoboost, 6K towing so do not have that much to share other than I love it, and no problems yet. Tire wear is still good the dealer even commented, they are showing less wear than he has seen on most. So guess I got lucky there. It takes 6 qt oil vers the 10 qt that I believe the 5.0 takes so a bit less cost on changes. Glad I chose the Eco, and would make the same choice again.

Ezra, you tow a 26 ft + V, 8.5 ft wide enclosed trailer with the 5.0L ? I'll be in the market in a year or two so that is good to hear.

My brother in law's father routinely tows a 6,000 lb dump trailer and a 4,000 lb skid steer with his ecoboost, that's a 10,000 lb load. He says he has no need for a diesel powered truck anymore.

You can also get the F-150 with the 6.2 liter in it as well.

I have 3 eco's at work. Change the tires as part of the purchase to get more sidewall strenght on a different set. I put overload springs on to reduce the sag from tongue weight and use an equilizer hitch. Plenty of power and gas mileage for us is really not different from v8 when loaded heavy-7,000 range.

I saw a test run pulling a 8000 pound load up a mountain out west a eco boost against a Toyota tundra. The ford kicked the Toyota *** faster and better fuel economy. They also had a new chevy but could not pull over 6000 pounds because of the 3.08 rear end.

the new 5.0 has more HP and torque than the 5.4 it replaced.
I do have a heavy foot so my average mpg is only around 14-15 mpg
I think the game changer is going to be the new fiat/Ram 1500s with a 6cl diesel

My brother is helping his brother-in-law move from South Carolina to Illinois, they are in Kentucky right now, his BIL's ecoboost is at the dealer, it is running rough, and won't shift into 5th or 6th gear. Not sure what the problem is as of right now. My brother is a Mopar guy, so he is having fun riding his BIL about his egoboost pile of poo.

I also have a eco and love it! I pull a 29 ft. inline, forgot it was back there a couple times! One of my riding buddies drove it, and was quite impressed with it, and he's a chevy guy! I would get the tow max package though. It has the 3/4 mirrors on it, plus as trailer brake controller built right in. trailer sway control, 3.73 rear axle. 36 gallon fuel tank.

I pull my 25' 102 wide with a 3.7 standard 6 cyl in a F150. I don't know why everyone needs all that power to pull 4 Sleds around in a Aluminum trailer.

If you really wanna read up on it, go to "F150forum.com" and read til your heart's content. There have been issue with the Egoboost, but like anything, it's luck of the draw if ya get a dud or not.
It always makes me chuckle a bit when I read/hear someone say "I forgot the trailer was even back there", or "I couldn't even tell it was back there". I have the 5.4L motor, and it does the job. If I were to do it over, I would go with the new 5.0L

I chuckle about that too. On the internet, you need a diesel dually 4x4 to pull a 2 place clamshell. You see this more on other sites.

Lol! Guys it was just a figure of speech on how well I thought the ecoboost pulled! for only being a 6 cylinder. But yes there's alot of guys who thing you do need a big diesel to pull a aluminum trailer.

Do some research ecoboost has had a number of problems. the 5.0 has some snot and is a great motor. Think about longevity and cost to replace 2 turbos down the road if they go. If your willing to take the risk the ecoboost does tow well and is fast as all he11. But if you're the kind of guy whose going to keep this truck 10+ years might want to look at the 5.0.

have u got wind of them popping the 3.0 powerstroke international motor in a USA f150 or just wishful thinking?
did not think that motor was even close to USA EPA standards.
if true I will be buying a new truck next yr.
I just cant see my self driving a fiat.
