Yes if they make kids have helmets for riding there bikes all motorcycle riders should wear them to set a good example for there kids!!!!!! Also if they save 1 life it will be worth it !!!! Suck it up and wear one !!!! Also we all wear a helmet when we are on our snowmoblies and I for one would never ever go out without one !!!!!!

It's ridiculous that it isn't a law. You have to wear a seatbelt in a car which surrounds you with airbags, but you can bounce your unprotected head off the concrete if you choose. How stupid is that? I look at it as, if you don't wear a helmet, than you have nothing worth protecting and you'll get what you have comin'.

Even though I wear one when I ride, I think it should be up to me whether or not I wear one. I believe it is my individual right to choose whether I have brain damage or not. I don't think it is the states responsiblity to cover my medical cost if I don't have any money or insurance. If you read the posters on the wall of the ER it states basically that they will make you stable then transfer you to another facility if you don't have enough insurance.

This reminds me of the smoking ban. I am against smoking but believe the owner of the bar should be able to choose smoking or not. I can choose to go there or not and my wife can choose to work as a bartender/waitress or not.

I guess I don't care if it is a law or not, I just don't understand why anyone would not wear one. Heck, when I ride my bike I usually have my tekvest on also.

I am steering towards the safety issue of this question more so than a human rights issue. I do agree with your post.

Yes I think it should be a law as long as there's a seat belt law. I sold my street bike about 1.5 yrs ago and always wore a helmet then and will in the future when I get another 1.

PR1 Do you wear a helmet? Just wondering because you started the thread and didn't say either way.

I think it should be up to rider. Its mainly the harley group that dont like to wear helmets right? I heard of some riders not coming to Mich. from Wisc. simply cause of helmet law. I have nothing against that, its there choice. I hit a deer doing 50-60, launched me from my bike, I broke alot of bones even though I had a chest protecter on but the helmet saved my butt! I will never ride any bike without a helmet period.

Not just a Harley guy thing. I wear a helmet and I ride a Harley even in states that don't require one.

I don't ride a motorcycle, but I concur with the others who have stated it should be left up to the individual to decide whether they want to take that risk (much like seatbelts, etc.) Personally, I can't understand why they would not want to wear them but hey -- it's not the government's duty to save me from myself.

Helmets cause doctor and hospital bills.

No helmets cause funerals along with the doctor bills and hospital bills.
My kids (26, 21, 19) lost a very close friend of theirs yesterday in Florida, who was not riding with a helmet. The report states massive head trauma as the cause. He left behind his wife of six years and a toddler. The 3 are flying out to attend the funeral. We closed shop today. He went to Florida to open his own flooring business with the skills he learned with us while we had him. God seems to take the good guys first.

I disagree with both seatbelt & helmet laws. I agree both should be worn. But I disagree that the gov't tell me what safety precautions I should or should not take with my own PERSONAL body. Laws for minors are one thing- they can be considered too young to make wise/correct decisions, or their parents may make poor decisions for them. But once you are 18, you can vote, you can die for this country, and damnit- you should be allowed to drive your car without a seatbelt on. Or smash your skull against the road when you bail off your bike. My brother has been in not 1, but 2 pretty bad motorcycle accidents and a helmet most definitely saved his life. So while I think you SHOULD wear one, I don't think you should HAVE to wear one b/c a politician says so. We have speed limits to keep ALL people safe- if you're racing around at 100mph, you could hurt others. But a helmet & seatbelt only impact that one person. Who are we to tell them they can't tempt fate?
And to whoever it is that's going to post how it costs us all money when we treat the person who is injured, I don't buy that argument. In fact- most statistics show that the non-wearer dies more often. So actually- less costs. Last I checked, the state doesn't pay for funerals. I think it's a revenue generator for the law breakers more than a cost savings in medical expenses.
I say- slippery slope. You tell me I HAVE to wear a seatbelt for my own safety? OK. Are you next going to tell me I HAVE to see a doctor every year or pay some penalty? Or I HAVE to have a teeth cleaning. If my teeth rot out of my face, that's my own choice. It's not hurting anyone else, same as if I fly through the windshield in a car accident. Stop telling me what to do with my own body gov't!
