This is called living in a society.

As such, we regulate how much noise you can make, whether you can carry guns around to shoot someone when you don't agree with them, vote on a certain day, get your car taken away because you drove drunk, the list is long.

In a perfect world, you could do anything and everything, and personally in reality, nobody gives a rats butt if you decide to drive down the road standing on the seat of your bike, and doing a handstand....IF......doing so didn't endanger others, or cost ME money when your wife goes boohooing to the government because YOU left 3 hungry brats starving just because it was your right to have a brain fart. Now your into MY pocket...costing my city, county, state and federal government MONEY.

It's all about the money, and personally I don't care if you want to exercise your right to do stupid....but don't do it on my dime. Hopefully if you do it right, it is quick and messy, but putting a helmet on, as we all know will save a dozen lives from the slow speed crash to the lucky son-of-a-gun who went flying thru the air with the greatest of ease...and lands on where his brains are most of the time he is going down the road with no helmet.

We don't let people exercise their rights to smoke in my face, shoot at my dog, or drive 600 mph on the interstate. We give up those individual freedoms to live in society that says, you can do this, but you can't do that. YOUR choice is to go live in outer mongolia....and feel free to eat dirt...nobody then cares...and your precious rights will never be infringed upon.

Relax pal. For what it is worth I wear a helmet now more than I don't. I am aware of the value of protecting myslef and my family's future. You are clearly not getting my point. All I am trying to say is that if you want to regulate everything that can harm you and potentially cause a financial drain on society, the list is never ending and subject to interpretation. If "it's all about the money" as you state, than there is plenty to be regulated. Again, if it is all about the money, smoking and poor diet clearly cause a greater drain on society than motorcycle accidents. If you were king, would you regulate what people can and can not eat? I for one would not want to live in a society that regulated every aspect of my life that may be dangerous or risky. As others have stated, snowmobiling would fall into that category by many. As would driving a car. Just out of curiosity, what criteria would you use to determine if an activity is to dangerous and may cause a financial burden on society? Not trying to start an arguement, just an entertaining debate.

While I agree with your post (very well written post with excellent points) this is going to lead back to one of having the personal responsibility to take care of their business (insurance needs) properly vs the individual who does not. Why should the responsible person's choices be limited simply because there are those who don't take care of their business?

And in the real world, a law being in place to prohibit ignorant/reckless/etc behavior or to protect one's own self is NOT going to completely prevent people from choosing to behave how they see fit. Just cuz the law STATES I am to wear my seat belt doesn't mean I am going to...if the law states I HAVE to wear a helmet doesn't mean I'm going to. Laws can't dictate behavior entirely. There will always be those who choose to break a law and behave in a manner of their choosing.

Does that make sense?!? I'm hoping it does...

cuz I'm too lazy to type it again...and too lazy to make yet another argument I'll just trot out the same one again...

And PR1...if you had asked the question as you state you initially intended, it would have been a boring thread!?! We all know that we should wear helmets...what we should do, what we DO do (hehehe) and what is the law are all entirely different things. You're a crap stirrer and you know it?! :)

Really? First I have heard of any ins. co. having such a clause.
Helps minimize their (Geico) risk.

As the Snell foundation says: Use your head! Wear a helmet!

i should say there is no medical coverage for me if no helmet was worn, the bike would still be covered

I think it should be up to rider. Its mainly the harley group that dont like to wear helmets right? I heard of some riders not coming to Mich. from Wisc. simply cause of helmet law. I have nothing against that, its there choice. I hit a deer doing 50-60, launched me from my bike, I broke alot of bones even though I had a chest protecter on but the helmet saved my butt! I will never ride any bike without a helmet period.

I think you are not wearing your helmit in the right place, if it saved you butt. lol just messin with ya

I'm 21, been riding since I was 18, sleds since 10

Never snowmobile without a helmet

Bike - I wear a helmet if I'm going on the highway. If I'm just cruising through town, top speed 40 mph (for a short duration) I won't wear one.

I had a friend lay a bike down at 100+ and he has burns and fractures, but the helmet saved his life, the helmet was COMPLETELY destroyed afterwards.

I wiped out at about 5 mph screwing around on my bike, not paying attention, and I swear I've never hit my head so hard on the ground before, but I was wearing a helmet because I was still relatively new to riding.

I vote for not making it a law

I'm not in favor of helmet laws either. I kind of look at as Gods way to weed out some of us. I'm an avid rider and wear all the gear. Check the actual stats on survival with and without a helmet. One of two people I know of personally, who don't wear helmets, has now lost most everything because of his accident. It was a low speed accident (around 20mph) and hit his head on the handle bars and exposed his brain matter. He is lucky to be alive. He and his family (2 kids under 5 and a wife) are now paying for it after 6 month in the hospital and now he is in mental rehab (and also lost his good job). A helmet would have saved his family from all the pain they're going through. Whats your head worth????

I like what Anonomoose says.

Pat, you need to go to a trauma ward at the local hospital and check out the mess no helmet makes. I started this thread because we lost a good family friend this past week in a motorcycle accident in Florida. They said it was a slow speed crash with a woman on a cell phone pulling into traffic from a side street. She stated she did not see him. He was 28 with a 6 year old son and a fantastic wife. Coroner said massive head injurys and that a helmet would of saved his life most likely. We sent my 21 and 26 year old sons down for the funeral yesterday along with 2 other close friends. They cried there eyes out. Dan was a flooring guy by trade, he worshiped my wife and our company. We will truly miss him. I truly do not want to lose any of my JDee family to the same thing. Just wear the dang helmet for your families and your friends.

Yesterday I had to drive about 30 miles behind 2 motorcyclists. It was a husband and wife, and mostly highway riding but a few stoplights and neighborhoods. The wife looked like she'd never ridden a motorcycle before, everytime she took off, it looked like she was going to tip the bike over. YET, neither were wearing a helmet. Any stupid drunk driving, can hit you on your bike, and your toast without a helmet. Just my 2 cents.

I am not discussing freedom, I am discussing if it is a good idea or not to wear a helmet. It keeps my Hair intaked (scalp). What about steel toed boots vs. tennis shoes. or leathers vs. shorts and sandals. As long as there are SUV's with mothers on cell phones swatting kids in the back seat and drinking latte's, doing makeup or any variation there of, we are in danger.
