Indy's Truck!

First off, I just realized I posted this on the wrong category. If a mod could post this on off-topic that'd be great.

Well, here she is. 98 GMC Sierra 170k miles 4x4 Z71 dual exhaust for $1600. Needs ball joints, 2 new tires in the future, hood painted, new grille and some headlight work. Guy before me didn't take very good care of it the last few months he had it, he let his girlfriend ride around in it and it was trashed. I guess thats why it was $1600. I spent a few hours just cleaning the interior tonight. I still gotta work at the carpeting more, my parents surprised me with a new shop vac tonight (old one died). So far, I've bought the matching spray paint, blinker switch, air fresheners, windshield wipers, oil and filter. Tomorrow i'm heading to the junkyard and getting a new grille and new headlight & mount. Then comes the upper ball joints on both sides, and hopefully before winter, 2 new tires, put them on back and put rear ones up front. The rear ones have 75% tread, the inside and middle of the front ones have 75% tread but the outside has 25% and they have VERY cupped tread wear.. I haven't slept the past 3 nights, i was excited about picking it up. It's LOUD! Sure, its a little rough around the edges, but I'm still comfortable with what i paid, since any truck under $2500 needs new tires or brakes or something.

I have not washed the outside really at all. It really needs a good wax, and its quite dirty on the outside also...

Not sure what this means...

Anyway, it's a solid truck. In my opinion GMCs of this vintage are next best thing to bullet proof when it comes to engines and transmissions. Also, I still like the look of this body style and the factory alloys.

You have every reason to be fired up.

BTW, loud is good.

I see what you don't understand lol. He was driving his company truck around and his girlfriend drove his truck around all day while he was at work everyday. The back floor was full of french fries, candy, and unburned cigarettes. He didn't smoke in it, but there was I bet 100 cigarettes unburned....? The truck was not babied by no means. But it still blue books at $3k+ and the rust it has isn't any worse than many trucks I see for sale for $3k.

It also has purple window tint. Tomorrow I'm getting registration and new plates, and insurance put on. Also a good wash wash and wax and some polishing. May or may not start on the painting of the frame and hood (I like to paint frames on all of our vehicles with flat black paint, a rusty frame is a pet peave of mine...)

I'm just happy I found the perfect happy medium. Low rust, minor problems, average miles, for a great price. Lots of times guys have a beat up truck and want a lot of money for it still.

That's a good looking truck. Although I'm scared to think what it might look like after you get done putting stickers on it. Seriously though I always liked the way those looked.

I don't know too much about trucks in general, but you might want to find out if the fuel pump is original before you get too far from home. We've learned that with higher mileage GM trucks twice. Might be good preventative maintenance...

Mid sized monster stickers on the back side windows, and a "INDY 500" sticker in old english italics on the back window(you know, mexican style)

Not to scare you of that truck but I have a 94, pretty much samething, interested difference is you have the vortec motor and 4L80E trans. But pay attention to the oil cooler lines, they will leak and are a pain to change. You can remove them completely and not worry. I took them off mine after I put a new motor in cuz mine took a main bearing and bearing material will not come out of the cooler completely. Another thing is water pumps, buddy of mine is on his 3rd pump and truck is just under 200k. Fuel pump will be another problem. If you do replace, go with the AC Delco brand. I put one in on mine from advanced auto and it lasted 6 months. Pay attention to radiator side tanks. They will leak. Intake gaskets as well. Another thing I do is when I change oil, is that I change the fuel filter. Yes it may seem crazy to do but it does extend the life of the pump. These are some things that I have ran into on mine and I've had mine for 10 yrs.

If the tires are worn as unevenly as you say spend the money on an alignment once the ball joints are done or you will just eat the new expensive tires. Don't let a tire shop just give you a toe alignment, got for a full 4 wheel alignment. It will make a world of difference in tire wear and control-ability of the truck.

Congrats

Indy, if the rear brake lines go- the steel ones along the frame rails- it is also WAY easier to just pull the bed to fix them , than do it from underneath, enjoy.

Agree!!!

Don't get too wound up in what might go wrong. When something needs fixing, you'll fix it.

Had a 94 that I traded with just under 200,000. Should have kept it for what I got for it - all original and trouble free. Had a 99 with a couple of the problems mentioned (oil cooler lines, fuel pump - although the fuel pump gave me fair warning. It was getting noisy). Even so, it also gave me many years of good service.

Like the idea of the INDY 500 in the back window.

Get under it with a hose and clean out all the grit and crud that will be in
the corners of the frame. Salt is eating your fuel and brake lines.

Nice truck, Bro! You will love it and it's the perfect truck to "tweek" with things that need to be done to it.

That being said, I expect you to at least make it to the Running Bear for the next Ride In! From there, you're ours dude! :)
