There is NO defense for a dog bite! None....somebody gets bit and they pay often thousands...your policy won't make them that much, so...they ask..honest folks tell them. You COULD have gotten the dog AFTER you purchased the house and policy...right?

I absolutely guaranty that you will find a cheaper rate if you do your homework...and all it requires is some research.

For the record many insurance companies ask "probing" questions...as well ask check your credit rating...facebook pages, and a whole lot more than this you wouldn't even suspect.

It's all about a claims record and every agent wants to keep theirs lower....so they don't buck the system.

By ditching the dog, you have REWARDED this company by continuing to patronize them. Is that really what you want to do?

Pretty soon...they will decide if you are "worthy" of their insurance by inspecting your home, cars, other properties, kids, friends, and even have a look see at your sleds! They will do as much as possible to find out insurance claims history and the likelihood of YOU putting a claim in.

Believe me, the best way to fight this is to organize, and let everyone know what company this is...and let them all write and say that this is a big no no....

Truth is that when you weigh out the claims of this sort over the entire country, the increase to insure over it is incredibly small....but a bunch of bad publicity over it can cost the bottom line far greater and YOU can control it by going away from them and telling everyone else HERE what company it is so that they can all get after the company to mend their ways.

yes insurance companies can discriminate against any thing they choose, As a consumer you do need to find one that works best for you. I'm not siding with them but just saying yes they do it, and have the right to do it, just as you have the right to shop for a new policy.

several homeowners policies do not cover dogs at all, so because you have homeowners and they haven't asked you about your pets does not necessarily mean you would be covered if something did happen, ask your agent and again read the fine print

you can also look into canine liability insurance for specific breeds that are not covered by your policy. If you show your company that you have this coverage they will allow you to have as many dogs as you'd like and of any breed. Umbrella policy is also an option but will be a little more $$.

also dog liability coverage can range from 100K to 300K to 1M worth of liabiliy depending on what you will need.

Not only do I work in the insurance field but we also had a dog that bit the neighbor as a kid, we had to put the dog down (Collie, MN state champion at that) and parents had to pay out of pocket above and beyond what the homeowners policy covered. Always make sure you have enough coverage, going from 100K to 300K of liability cost almost nothing, a smart decision for anyone with dogs IMO.

The last thing I'd mention is naming the company could be a rule violation of the board - "If you do not have something positive to say about someone, then don't say it here!"

Couple of years ago our homeowners insurance company dropped us because we had a trampoline in the yard. It was a blessing in disguise, our broker found higher coverages for twenty percent less annually. I heard on the radio one time anybody who does not shop for insurance annually is a fool. In my experience insurance costs do creep up over time, gradually so it's not obvious. We do shop once in a while but not every year.

That is why I been holding back on saying who the insurance company is..I was at work and the agent showed up.My wife stays home with the kid and the wife told them he was a prue breed, we never heard of insurance companys refusing coverage based on a dog otherwise yeah she would have said a mix breed. The good news is that he did find a good home as I found out a couple hours ago. Thanks guys for your help though...I will be shopping around here shortly work has been crazy so finding time to do stuff around the house has been put on hold temporarily. We never had a claim on the house nor cars,no speeding tickets,no criminal history etc.

Got to have those wood stoves installed correctly stone or tile alcoves work well & reflect heat. Way too many wood stoves just sitting on wood floor or too close to walls not in spec. Also need to brush weekly or monthly not really a big deal to do but most people don't so you get chimmy fires.

I was curious as I just changed insurance companies on my cabin with a wood stove. The new company made me provide them a diagram of my stove with measurements from walls and ceiling. They also required pictures to show the stone and the stack setup going through the ceiling. My original insurance company never required this information. I changed companies when the original insurer jacked my rates after they did a fire department distance audit.

I hope the new owners of the Rottie have check with their insurance company or he will be back at the shelter again, just saying.

I suspect there is more to the story. Hemi, straight up, your dog is gone because of an Insurance Co. Pushing you around????? Or ???? Not trying to be a pain, but dude this is insane. I just don't get it. As far as a wood stove, you pay extra for the fire risk period. I suspect different rules in different areas?

Insurance guys who are lurking in here, what is your input on this?

Yeah it's true. Insurance companies can drop you if they don't like what you own. When I lived in Kalamazoo our agent would just show up from time to time to "check things out". If you owned certain breeds of dogs, trampolines, woodburners, and if you had ANY water on your property, even those cute little ponds that people like to build, they would either cancel you, or force you to pay more. Now we didn't live weird or anything. We had a cute little house that we took care of, have excellent credit scores, ALWAYS paid the bill in full when it came due, and NEVER put in a claim for anything, the entire 28 years we lived there. We really took offense that we could NOT install ANY kind of woodburner and keep their insurance in effect. It was like they had the right to tell us how to live. I'm glad I do not have to deal with them anymore, but I know there are a lot of insurance companies out there that do the same thing. It's not right, but they get away with it because they do not have to do business with you if they do not wish. Society is going downhill quick when other people can tell you what you can or cannot own!

That is up to you. If you choose to be pushed around, then you WILL be pushed around! There are ins companies out there that will welcome the chance to quote you on your home owners and will also be up front about any extra costs due to dogs, wood burners or what not. It is up to you to sift through the crap to find the gold. If you are willing to be pushed into something that you are not comfortable with, it is your fault. We live in a free society with the choice to pay whoever we want for whatever services we desire.

The point here is people can only try to tell you what to do. If you conform to their requests then you are just as much in the wrong as them. Stick to your guns and do not let them push you around.

In our family the dog is just that. Family! Would you let an ins company tell you to give your toddler up for adoption because they are a liability? Ya! That is a little extreme but maybe not if put into perspective?
