This thread is beginning to sound like the plot for a new TV show: "American Idle".:)

X'2! Idle? They have to burn a few calories between the couch and the mailbox to get their check right? Probably threw a couple of 5 hour energy drinks on there also!

In Illinois, you don't even need to go to the mailbox. If you have a LINK card, the money is automatically put on the card at the beginning of every month and it works just like a debit card. There are certain things you aren't supposed to be able to purchase but if the store just switches a code here and there??...

And that's from 2008 - am sure the numbers have gone up with the number of people who are unemployed and are now on assistance. Pretty darn disturbing how much money was spent out of state considering this is supposed to be for people in dire straits!?

((and can I just add that the mate1 ads in the sidebar wouldn't be so bad if the girls were actually nice looking!! Well, guess the brunette isn't too bad but those blonds are looking kinda skanky, if ya ask me...which I guess no one did?! :D)

It was just on the news yesterday that one in five Americans (?) whatever that means, is getting Government assistance of some sort.

one in five....that one stagers me. I have never seen what an unemployment check looks like. Not one nickle from the government ever.

WTG - I'm sorry but you just crack me up. I've tried not to laugh at this but I can't help myself. BTW, you'd be surprised at how many men are fascinated with skanky women.

Anyway....It doesn't surprise me that the members on this site take a lot of pride in the fact that they've worked hard and have probably done without things but they've made do with what they had without looking for handouts. It just seems to fit the snowmobiler profile.

I think what bugs me a little is that it seems that a lot of people think that a job, however unskilled, doesn't pay enough or seems to be beneath them. Believe me, I taken every crappy job available when it meant feeding the family. The stories I could tell!

Unfortunately, our system seems to promote dependency. Back in my bartending days, I regularly had people tell me that they were passing up jobs because it meant taking a pay cut from what they were collecting on unemployment. In some cases, this is a valid excuse but in most of the cases I saw, it was not.

I own a grocery store in MN. It is illegal to sell items like cigarettes and alcohol to people with EBT cards. It is considered fraud and is punishable with steep fines. The major reason these EBT cards were created was to eliminate fraud. In the old days it was too easy for dishonest folk to sell the actual paper food stamps for half their stated value and purchase items like booze and smokes. You also cannot purchase things like soap and shampoo with MN EBT cards. But it is perfectly legal to buy lobster, porterhouse steaks, potato chips and many other junk foods. The items that qualify are constantly changing and it takes one person a few hours a week just to keep up and make sure everything is in the right department. It is a pain in the butt. The WIC program is just as bad. Originally intended for the needy now everyone qualifies. Taxpayers get to pay for millionaire's kids baby formula. Neat, huh? Many things that started out with good intentions have morphed into gigantic money sucking inefficient job creating bull****. I wish we could go back to about 1985.

I forgot the best part. There are actually items that are deemed taxable AND food stampable. This means that if somebody comes in with green money they get taxed but if they come in with an EBT card the tax is removed. It is so convoluted it is unbelievable. Also the folks that work for WIC and the issuers of food stamps are encouraged to sign up as many people as possible for these programs. I have been doing this for over 20 years. In my experience there are only about 20% of the recipients of EBT cards and WIC that really need the help. The rest are simply abusing the system. But the system has opened itself up to this abuse. It costs the rest of us milllions if not billions. Just one more example of the many things out of control in our great welfare state. End of rant. Don't forget your Mom tomorrow. Grub.

All this just burns me. Here I am, an honest American workin 45+ hrs at my job plus another 30+ doin side jobs and I can barely afford a box of beer and a pizza on the weekends to enjoy myself.

What I find amusing about the lobster is that it was something poor folks ate and now considered "eating good". I think it tastes like crap. From Wikipedia:

"In North America, the American lobster did not achieve popularity until the mid-19th century, when New Yorkers and Bostonians developed a taste for it; not until the invention of a special boat, the lobster smack, did a commercial fishery flourish.[20] Prior to this time, lobster was considered a mark of poverty or as a food for indentured servants or lower members of society in Maine, Massachusetts and the Canadian Maritimes, and servants specified in employment agreements that they would not eat lobster more than twice per week.[21] American lobster was initially deemed worthy only of being used as fertilizer or fish bait, and it was not until well into the twentieth century that it was viewed as more than a low-priced canned staple food.[22]"

Anyhow, it's quite expensive electing officials isn't it?! Not only are they paid for by the corporations, they spread the money you pay into the system back to those jamokes!

Unreal. The sad thing is that they're smart enough to get a decent job (probably) but choose to milk the system and take cash out of my wallet.

My motorcycle club puts together a food Drop in the fall for the poor. It amazes me how many nice Lincoln navigators and Cadillacs go thru the line. I told the club that we need to do it differently. Those who really need the food don’t have vehichles to get to the food we are giving out. They say, "we don’t know the sitiuation that the fancy car owners are really in so give them the food." I say BS. They can sell their Lexus then think about stealing food meant for the poor. Just ticks me off to no end.

I get the point but a 10-15 y.o. Navagator can be of little value too.
Maybe you should stand there with a Bluebook and look up the values, if it's worth more than 5K tell them to keep moving. LOL

Ever look at a car lot that caters to low income, they are full of Lincolns, Caddies, Lexus. All have a bunch of miles on them, they sell them for 2X what they are worth but will let anyone make payments on any vehicle, no credit check, no downpayment. And Guiedo sits in the back of the office ready to go get it back if you miss a payment.
