Lawn Service; Yea or Nea

At home, I do the basic weed/feed and such for a descent lawn. It looks real nice but honestly I dont want to spend the extra money or time to make it really nice, I have too many summer hobbies for that. At our lakehouse, we do not use much, mostly sand. We really try to keep stuff (nitrates, phosphates, general runoff) out of the lake. A cranberry farm (marsh) on our lake (and I worked there for 5 summers, loved it) closed and they allowed it to go back to a natural wetland. And I can tell you, the quality of water in the lake has increased significantly. The clarity has increased significantly and the late season algae blooms have decreased also. We dont get the nasty eutrophic water conditions that we used to....hence think Rice Lake, even woth low and warm water conditions.

Anyone have any luck getting rid of moles? They apparently took over my back yard over the winter. I've tried traps in the past with no luck.

For fertilizer I put down scott's 2 or 3 times a year that I buy from costco. They have it at a reasonable price so it's not too far off the menards brands etc. prices. Late summers get dry here typically so there's no use to do more unless I want to water a lot, which I don't. Usually early spring, around memorial day and fall. And spray weed killer as needed.

Moles or Voles? Two different animals.

  • Moles: Primarily eat insects, grubs, and worms. They create raised tunnels (spiderweb pattern) and volcano-shaped soil mounds.
  • Voles: Herbivores that eat roots, bulbs, and bark. They create shallow surface runways, do not typically make mounds, and leave small holes, often killing patches of grass.
I've had good luck with the following; Cut the grass really short before the ground freezes or as the grass goes dormant. That provides less food for the critters over the wintertime. Reducing thatch also helps. As is the case with most critters, if you reduce the food supply, they'll move on.

Now...if you have Trolls....

A troll is
a person who deliberately posts inflammatory or offensive content online to provoke reactions, cause disruption, or harass others.

They're rare in these parts. We usually just step on them, burn'm or ignore until they go away. :)

I have tried most everything & this trap is the one that flat out works. Find the fresh tunnels, place one of these over top of the tunnel & just wait for the yellow thing to pop up. 2 summers ago I killed 15 of them. 1775588741185.png
