Lawn Service; Yea or Nea

At home, I do the basic weed/feed and such for a descent lawn. It looks real nice but honestly I dont want to spend the extra money or time to make it really nice, I have too many summer hobbies for that. At our lakehouse, we do not use much, mostly sand. We really try to keep stuff (nitrates, phosphates, general runoff) out of the lake. A cranberry farm (marsh) on our lake (and I worked there for 5 summers, loved it) closed and they allowed it to go back to a natural wetland. And I can tell you, the quality of water in the lake has increased significantly. The clarity has increased significantly and the late season algae blooms have decreased also. We dont get the nasty eutrophic water conditions that we used to....hence think Rice Lake, even woth low and warm water conditions.

Anyone have any luck getting rid of moles? They apparently took over my back yard over the winter. I've tried traps in the past with no luck.

For fertilizer I put down scott's 2 or 3 times a year that I buy from costco. They have it at a reasonable price so it's not too far off the menards brands etc. prices. Late summers get dry here typically so there's no use to do more unless I want to water a lot, which I don't. Usually early spring, around memorial day and fall. And spray weed killer as needed.

Moles or Voles? Two different animals.

  • Moles: Primarily eat insects, grubs, and worms. They create raised tunnels (spiderweb pattern) and volcano-shaped soil mounds.
  • Voles: Herbivores that eat roots, bulbs, and bark. They create shallow surface runways, do not typically make mounds, and leave small holes, often killing patches of grass.
I've had good luck with the following; Cut the grass really short before the ground freezes or as the grass goes dormant. That provides less food for the critters over the wintertime. Reducing thatch also helps. As is the case with most critters, if you reduce the food supply, they'll move on.

Now...if you have Trolls....

A troll is
a person who deliberately posts inflammatory or offensive content online to provoke reactions, cause disruption, or harass others.

They're rare in these parts. We usually just step on them, burn'm or ignore until they go away. :)

I have tried most everything & this trap is the one that flat out works. Find the fresh tunnels, place one of these over top of the tunnel & just wait for the yellow thing to pop up. 2 summers ago I killed 15 of them. 1775588741185.png

about 10 years ago I had voles/moles?? digging tunnels in my back yard and would go to neigbors yards. Couple holes/tunnels turned into 20 plus. I said that's enough of that. I bought D-con tablets put them next to the holes and have never had an issue since.
One day i was cutting the grass by the garage and out of the corner of my eye near the base of the garage I see like this black cloud. It was a vole/mole cover in fly's like just staggering. I went and got a shovel and put him out of his misery.
If you got dog or cat maybe not the solution.
I use Menards in spring and fall on lawn.,,, spray weeds individually when cutting grass. I'm pretty anal. Once you keep that up for a few years I really hardly have any weeds.
I absolutely refuse to spend the money on Scotts weed and feed. They're prices are insane.

Yep I did a sanity check with my neighbor across the street that does his own fertilization and uses Scott’s. He pays the same as I pay for 6 Truegreen applications for 3 he does himself. I used to use Menards fertilizer Scott’s way too expensive to consider. He likes to apply his fertilizer himself and takes great pride in his lawn me $ for $ I’ll take the service spend my time doing other things but to each his own.

Can agree, at the price of Scott’s you’re better off paying a service. Usually around $50 for a 10k sq ft bag. Proper treatment is at least 4 applications, a crabgrass preventer, weed and feed, lawn food, and winterizer.

I usually buy Six $20 bags of Menards fertilizer per year, and Four $10 bags of Milo/10-10-10. That’s $160, seems reasonable for me. I’ll double up on weed and feed, and lawn food. Typically, I’ll do:
Crabgrass preventer April/May
Weed and feed May/June
Lawn food June/July
weed and feed July/August
Lawn food August/september
Winterizer October/November

Then I’ll mix in Milorganite and/or 10-10-10 halfway between those applications. I’m usually only putting this stuff on the front half the lawn that I keep watered well.

I bought all the stuff to spray for mosquitoes, but it never seemed to work nearly as well as the professional companies, so I let them do it now.
We have several growing pots of lemon grass scattered around the house where we hang out, patio, front porch, driveway and such. And no skeeters anymore! I though Kathe was nuts with the idea, however it works fantastic.

Moles in my area like to dine on grubs, so I use Scott's GrubEx every spring. If I don't do anything else, GrubEx is religiously put down. I got lazy for a few years and didn't use it, boy did I pay for that.

heard somewhere they eat earthworms as well. the old grub stuff got them too so still get the moles if you have a healthy yard with worms.
