The carhartt deal is for real. Met some nice folk and had some good laughs all over the place, up north and down south. Honestly, we tourists are way out of place sometimes.
One of the best comments I heard was in the lower, somewhere east of the bridge. Guy in our group just bought this awesome castleX suit, AC orange and black in a graffiti pattern, he felt like a million$'s. As soon as he walked in this little old lady looked at him and asked, "Where he ever found a coat like that? You could work for the circus!"

I see lots of those banners, too.....I'm betting if space limitations and printing costs weren't prohibitive, they'd read like this:

"Welcome safe, responsible, courteous snowmobilers.....all others please go home".

And whom will determine safe and responsible??? The establishment that takes a sober snowmobiler then over serves them to enhance their bottom line then let's them walk out the door Unsafe and unresponsible?? This is state wide.

This is getting away from the reason I posted, but since you asked -- it's up to the snowmobiler to behave safely and responsibly. I have never in my 51 years seen any establishment take a sober snowmobiler (or any person, for that matter) and force drinks down their gullet.

'Nuff said. My post had nothing to do with drinking and riding; a sober rider can ride just as unsafely and irresponsibly as a drunk rider can.

Funny thing we were tooling around on a pond not too far from where this so called issue is and a group of loggers walked out by us, thinking we were upset I go over by them, nicest guys in the world and just wanted to see what we were doing, they wanted to see us launch off a jump we made and do wheelies, they were appauled by what newer sleds can do and watched us for almost a half hour before going back to work. I have about the whole thing on helmet camera if anyone wants to see. No issues here so quit getting your panties in a bunch!!

it's not an all or nothing affair. While all up businesses that cater to visitors appreciate folks coming to the area to support their livelihood, i do not know of a single one that wants or feel even remotely indebted to the visitors that come in and are rude, disrespectful and think that without them, they all would go belly up. Folks do not live in the up to become rich with money and are thus more less prone to want to deal with the person that thinks their poop does not stink. So for those of you with that attitude, please stay home and play in the dirt and grass and leave the up to those that truly appreciate it and the good folks that live here.

And to this same thinking - I try to stop and chat with non-snowmobile folks when I can. In my last trip, I saw 2 people on the trail a long ways away from aa road. I stopped to make sure they were okay - first priority. Then asked what they were doing - whcih they responded trapping. I bet I talked with them for 15 minutes and I think we both were a little happier.

As some others have said - snowmobiliers are our own worst eniemy. But we are also our best ambassidor. So stop, say hi, put a smile on your face and make a little small talk. It surely can't hurt.

If you ride off trail know where you are or don't do it simple as that! As far as breaking into camps why would sledders do that? No TVs leaving by sled & if it is stuff like beer & liquor it has got to be local kids using bad judgement......bust the punks install cameras!

I don't mean to knock the locals, but out of towners aren't breaking into logger camps. We might leave a track 20 feet to the right or left of the trail occasionally, but that's it. This sounds like a local using his sled to commit crimes, not a person interested in sledding at all. The odds that the person responsible has a trail permit is almost zero.

I hope the off trail riding gets shut down, huge wake up call for all the users and abusers. I gave up on that area for the simple reason EVERYONE and their brother goes there and thinks its THEIR playground and the Locals NEED them there. WRONG.....Respect and common sense are hard to find now a days and with that so will good areas open to ride.

Do what I do.... Offtrail on public land only.... Heck, I think 75% of the UP is public land, it's not difficult to find.
