Loud cans

Sorry, have to take the opposite opinion, (been saying it for years) when they make Harley's (the Harley's that ride on public roads past houses) put baffles in their mufflers and quiet them down, then I say get rid of the exhaust cans in sleds. If nobody used them, they wouldn't make them. Sleds ride in the middle of nowhere for the most part. If people used the throttle sparingly around towns, nobody would care or complain. IF it's OK for Harleys to blast past my house or car at 90 DB's, then why should I have a problem with a sled with silencer?

OK - have at it/me. Flame away

100% Agree!

This thread is funny. Am I into obnoxious noise on my sled, nope. However, each unto his own. People should respect residential areas for sure, but outlawing things just isn't the way to go. Common sense should rule.
I guess my horse just isn't as high as some.

Ding - ding - ding! We have a winner

They don't close roads because of loud Harleys. They have and will close trails because of loud sleds. Without interconnected trails we have no trail system. Without a groomed trail system 80% of current riders would quit. If it ever gets to that point all the boondockers and mountain riders in the world will not keep the sport alive.

Not only DON'T they close roads - they don't even ticket the Harleys with CLEARLY above DMV regulated DB mufflers. I ain't talkin about closin roads. It's totally ridiculous, because they make Harleys in WI, they let the law breakers ride wherever they want and rattle my windows. But if I get in my car with glass packs or non-stock exhaust, I get I ticket. Total hypocrites, these law enforcement officials. It's just idle threats - they are not going to close any trails. It's too big of a money maker for winter resorts and businesses. They want to scare us into outlawing something for a few idiots. How about you enforce the DB limits around towns? Just like all these emission regs they are putting on recrational manufacturers when manufacturing and other sources have 10 times the effect on the environment that a snowmobile rider will ever have. Total left-wing, whacked out hypocrites.

I don't think we have to worry about the trails closing on public land, but many trails go across private land and if the landowner decides the sleds are to loud and shuts down his portion of the trail, the interconnected trail system could be lost like grub says.

I understand his, and your point completely. I'll bow out of this discussion before I lose my sense of civility.

But I think it's entirely wrong to outlaw a product simply because a few "goofs" have to braap the throttle around towns and homes.
Put a couple DNR wardens around towns and ticket people for excessive noise. This would get their attention.
The incongruity of the entire argument has never made sense to me.

I was alot more affable when I was riding last weekend. Sitting around reading websites on Sat. sucks.

I will never argue with anyone about hypocritical law enforcement. If they actually did enforce DB limits around towns and hand out a few fines it could only help. Most places already have the laws - they are just not enforced. The emissions thing is the single biggest factor that has added to the cost of new sleds in the last 10 years. Go to an airport sometime and watch a big jet take off. One jet pumps more crap into the atmosphere with ONE take-off than all the sleds in the state of Wisc combined. It is total BS. Nothing has changed for the biggest polluters - they are taking it out on the rest of us. As far as closing or rerouting trails - yes - this happens all the time. On our yearly trips to Wisc we always run across a trail or two that have changed for a few miles or so. It has even happened back here at home. When we have to change a trail it is usually because of some irresponsible, stupid thing that 'just a few' snowmobilers did. When we go to ask a new landowner if we can cross their land instead the first question they usually ask is ' How come you got booted of so and so's land?' So yes, trail closures are real and they do happen.

I think grub is 100% right. We have lost sections of important trails here in the U.P. over the last 20 years because of people not staying on the trail thru private property and loud sleds. This is a fact.I don't like it either but can we afford to pizz off the people who have control of our trails across private property?

It has nothing to do with "loud"sleds people. Its about respecting private property! We have lost alot of trails here where i live because of "stay off"or"lose it".the trail runs across my hayfield;respect it or it will not be there.simple.i am an avid snowmobiler.most people crossing the line dont belong to a club guaranted!

Really, no need to race around in Krupp's field while you wait for gas, with your stupid loud can on your team slednecks stickered up sled. The people who live right across the street are sick of it. USE SOME COMMON SENSE!

Call the police and or DNR. Get that guy ticketed. These things do more to get trails closed than just about anything else. There is no excuse to be using them anymore.

I was very surprised to hear all the loud sleds this weekend. I thought the loud sled fad was out, I guess not.

Word of caution, do not get a room on the water, towards the north end of the Ramada. That is were the line up to race across the canal. Other than that we love the Ramada.

Also noticed since INDY gave up the mohawk, more people are wearing them. :)
When I first started wearing it, so many people would talk to me about it at bars, or sleds we'd be passing would rub their hand over their helmet and give me a thumbs up. That was 3 years ago. Now, it seems everybody and their brothers got one... I personally don't own a can, but don't think cans are the problem. It's the way the people who have them respect them. They think braapin up and down snow banks and pullin into bars & gas stations with their sno stuff fart can is cool. They sound horrible... Really... They sound like a friggin pingy dirt bike...
