Make-A-Wish sled restoration project.

I agree with the commentary. You guys totally rocked this project! Are you sending the skis away to be chromed, or what's the plan for them? Were they chrome? It looks like the tach isn't working in the video. Maybe not hooked up? I cannot believe that's the same machine you started with. Great job.

Thanks, man, you really shouldn't have!!!!!

Thanks everybody!
It truly was a great feeling hearing this old sled come back to life.

When I first started this project, I stated it would require the generosity of others to get it done. That is exactly what has gotten the project to this point. I think it is a testament to what good folks snowmobilers really are.

I still have quite a few details to finish up, and I have some wiring bugs to work out. The skis will get done as soon as I hear from phazerpilot. I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all those that have donated to the project, offered advise, words of encouragement and stepped up to help out. It was all very much appreciated. Thanks all!!:)

If a picture is worth a 1000 words, the video is worth...well, a lot. I played it several times and I just can't get over how good that engine sounds. After hearing it run, it starts to sink in just how far this sled has come. What a story!

This story isn't over but you're closing in on writing the final chapter.

I just wanted to give a quick note that there will probable be a bit of a lull in activity on this thread. I dropped the skis off to phazerpilot today and it will probably take a week or so before they're ready. I am working on all the little bugs and final details, but there won't be much that is picture worthy. I figure I will post some nice pics of the finished project once every last detail is taken care of. I was really hoping to get the sled done in time for a test and tune run, but I just don't think its going to happen. I leave for Wyoming for my one and only ride this year on the 24th, and aside from a freak spring storm, I'm pretty sure the winter will officially be shot by the time I get back.

So now, the million dollar question that begs to be answered... what do we do with this thing. Auction it off now, wait till snow flies next season when I can do some testing and tuning, or wait all the way till next Ride-In and auction or raffle it off there????

I would wait until closer to snow flying next year and sell $25-$50 raffle tickets and pick the winner at The Ride-In. You will get more response next year as people's attention are moving away from snowmobiling right now. If you could sell 300 or more it would raise more than an auction IMO.

I agree, IMO this thing needs to be at the ride-in next year... We would love to see the workmanship in person, it looks great in picture!

X2, Even at $ 25.00 a ticket with 300 being sold, it would bring $ 7500.00.

If you and John decide to do a raffle, I will committ to the first 2 tickets right now and challenge another 150 people to do so, and we are there. I'm guessing we may even sell more than 300. Heck we may get 400 to buy a single ticket with the number of people that visit this site. You could sell tickets at John's guest bartending gig next year and also at the 2nd annual Bug Bar/Scottiking karaoke night. We could get snowmobile magazines to write about it etc. and maybe sell 500 tickets! That's $12,500!! I'm pumped just thinking about the possibilities. Make A Wish is such a great charity on top of it. We could show the video of the firemen taking the 4 year old boy to the airport that someone posted on this site a while back. If that doesn't pull at your heart strings (and purse strings), nothing will. I will do anything I can to support it. We could all get our local snowmobile clubs involved. I think the sky is the limit if we do it right. You guys put so much sweat and tears, not to mention time and your own money, into this sled, let's get the most we can for it. I feel we will get much more with a raffle than what a single bidder will be willing to pay. Plus, we all have a chance to win it and it may get donated back again. Ok, I'm done rambling on, but this has me excited!!!

Wait till next year

We talked with John and he is giving us some info so that we can do legal- raffels & 50/50's

**** print 100,000 tickets- distribute to every snowmobile club & bar across the midwest
if 10% are sold and turned in thats 1/4 million... Little far fetched...but could be done

But back to the situation We think next year is best

Wow! That thing sounds and looks great!
Count me in on some tickets, and if I win, I will sell it and give all the money back to make a wish.
You've outdone yourself on this project! You should be very proud, SL1!!

Thanks for all the input. It seems the consensus is to wait. I tried like heck to get it done for this year, but I just couldn't pull it all together in time. I agree in that I think it would be the most advantageous to wait until next year.

In other news, Phazerpilot went ahead and made a liar out of me. I do have a picture to share. I dropped the skis off Saturday morning and he called Sunday morning to ask if I wanted them back. Talk about a quick turn around!!

Thanks Phazerpilot. As always, they look great!

Anything worth doing right takes time, and it's obvious you guys didn't cut any corners and did it right. It will pay dividends in the long run! Well done gents!

Cheers!

OK folks, seems the opinions are pretty much unanimous. I got in touch with John today and the decision has been made to raffle the sled off next season. I will bring the sled to the Ride-In and the winner will be called at the event. This will also give me a chance to make sure the darn thing works. Then I can really call it "done".:)

Good decision! Does anyone know a printer that would help a good cause by printing some raffle tickets? It's never too early to start. Let me know what I can do to help!
