A winter storm watch for Vilas County and north Tuesday night through Thursday morning. 6-10” with higher totals possible, perhaps up to 16” in lake belt areas. Looks like a snowy week up here.

A "Winter Storm Watch" has been posted for the Keweenaw with 12 to 16" possible especially in the higher terrain areas for Tues night through Wed. GFS & Euro models are currently showing a significant amount of snow here. This is not exactly how I would like this to pan out as the ground is still warm, this is going to be a wet mess. Be careful out there if you are traveling anywhere & shovel wisely.

We have had some cold nights and some small shallow lakes have some ice on them. This starts as rain and then transitions to snow. The good thing is that right now most of the lakes are still open so the snow isn’t going to be sitting on an inch or two of ice. I guess we’ll see how this pans out by Wednesday. Love a good snow storm!

Have to start building a base asap so right on time imo. Looks like cold coming in after Les event so that’s good just don’t know without Dee forecast how long the cold will last. Time will tell…..

And by Monday morning there will be a million sleds up here thinking because we have 12-24” of snow why aren’t the trails like mid January trails. It’s been raining for the last 4 hours and going to rain most of the day so everything is going to be sloppy wet then get covered with a bunch of snow then eventually get cold. So it will take some time to get things ready.

IMO, Too much too soon. I don't like the prospect of starting the snow season with so much & it's going to be a wet heavy snow. This is not going to be fun at all. Besides, trails cannot open until Dec 1st so no grooming can begin for another week due to firearm deer season. Hard to believe, yesterday we had temps in the low 50's with sunny skies, the proverbial calm before the storm. I took advantage of it for a couple of hours & put up some outside Christmas decorations & picked up a few things in the yard & trimmed some shrubs before the snow hits.

I’ve been waiting for the we need the ground to freeze comments lol. Been a diehard snowmobiler for 20 years and people wish they could control the weather. Ain’t gonna happen. Break up and pack in the wet areas and it’ll freeze up just fine. There’s a reason NWI clubs have Argo’s. I believe it was last January, central WI had 6 weeks of below freezing temps and no snow… I’ll take the snow and work with it then no snow… it’s a start… a great one!

As for sleds going crazy Dec 1, I think anyone diehard enough to go ride right away is experienced and knowledgeable enough to know what will be ready… trail 3 mass to houghton is about it.

If the Euro and GPS models verify in the next 240 hours there could be double digit snow from northern IL all the way past Lake Superior. We can only hope right now but that would be a helluva start! I'll take the snow before cold too! Locally, our wet spots are not right now. Dry around here.

I personally can't really remember any years that the ground freezes in upper peninsula before the snow. That big lake to the north normally doesn't allow that to happen. So this will be like any other year where they are going to have to rely on sleds to pack the frost down
